model diagnostics for MatrixModels
Dear list,
I have been working with the MatrixModels package quite a bit this
week, and it is proving to be extremely valuable for my current work
(I am working with several factors with many levels, leading to a
sparse model matrix). However, as my knowledge of statistical theory
leaves much to be desired, there are certain aspects of model
evaluation etc that I am having trouble with. Has

How to build a large identity matrix faster?
Hello, I am trying to build a large size identity matrix using diag(). The
size is around 23000 and I've tried diag(23000), that took a long time.
Since I have to use this operation several times in my program, the running
time is too long to be tolerable. Are there any alternative for diag(N)?
Thanks
Cheers,
yct

Problem building R 2.10 release
Hi,
I am having problem building R 2.10, and it does not seem anyone else is
having a similar problem...
My system information:
uname -m = x86_64
uname -r = 2.6.31-ARCH
uname -s = Linux
gcc (GCC) 4.4.1
icc (ICC) 11.0 20081105
The first problem I encounter seems to be with icc and wctype.h during
./configure.

For a me a "full rank matrix" is a matrix the rank of which is indeed min(nrow(A), ncol(A))
but here the meaning of "always is full rank" is somewhat confusing. Does it

Matrix*vector: coercing sparse to dense matrix for arithmetic
Hi,
I have a sparse Matrix (kronecker product of spline design matrices),
and I need to multiply each row by a number to get another matrix. If
the matrix is A and the numbers are stored in a vector k, with plain
vanilla matrices I would do
A*k
But when using the Matrix package (class of A is "dgCMatrix"), I get
the warning "coercing sparse to dense matrix for arithmetic".

Rank of matrix
Dear all,
Rank of a matrix depends on which factors? Only on rows or
coumns? or both ? If there is a collinearlity in the variables ( columns )
does it effects the rank?

plotting radial dendrograms
Dear list,
I am trying to plot a radial dendrogram using the ape package, which
requires my data to be of class 'phylo'. Currently I have my
dendrogram stored as an object of class 'dendrogram' which was
produced from an outside bit of C code, but was made into an object of
class 'igraph.eigenc' and converted to a dendrogram using
'as.dendrogram()' from the igraph

mixture models/latent class regression comparison
Dear list,
I have been comparing the outputs of two packages for latent class
regression, namely 'flexmix', and 'mmlcr'. What I have noticed is that
the flexmix package appears to come up with a much better fit than the
mmlcr package (based on logLik, AIC, BIC, and visual inspection). Has
anyone else observed such behaviour? Has anyone else been successful
in using the mmlcr

package check fail on Windows-release only?
I mistakenly left a write in "/tmp" in the rockchalk package (version
1.8.109) that I uploaded last Friday. Kurt H wrote and asked me to fix
today.
While uploading a new one, I became aware of a problem I had not seen.
The version I uploaded last Friday, 1.8.109, has OK status on all
platforms except r-release-windows-ix86+x86_64. I get OK on
oldrel-windows and also on devel-windows.

Deviance of zeroinfl/hurdle models
Dear list, I'm wondering if anyone can help me calculate the deviance
of either a zeroinfl or hurdle model from package pscl?
Even if someone could point me to the correct formula for calculating
the deviance, I could do the rest on my own.
I am trying to calculate a pseudo-R-squared measure based on the
R^{2}_{DEV} of [1], so I need to be able to calculate the deviance of
the full and null

Problem with R using pgi compiler on x86_64
Hi,
we have installed R-2.8.1 using the current pgi compiler (8.0.2) for
AMD64 on a SLES9 system.
When I try to install "Matrix" everything is fine until the last step.

I then tried to install a recommended package called Matrix. The compilation failed with the following messages,

negative binomial latent class regression in package flexmix
Hello list,
Has anyone had any luck creating an M-step driver for negative
binomial regression for use with package flexmix? I've had a look
here: http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/flexmix/vignettes/flexmix-intro.pdf
as well as poking around in the flexmix source, but I haven't had much
luck getting anything to work. I can't figure out how to a) come up
with an initial estimate

spatial interaction (gravity) model as Poisson regression
Dear list,
I posted essentially this same question to the r-sig-geo mailing list
last week with no response :( Unfortunately I am no closer to reaching
a solution, so I now post it here (with some clarifications) in the
hope that someone following this list might have an answer for me:
Has anyone had much experience with spatial interaction (or gravity)
models, specifically in the form of

R-devel/Linux x64/Sun Studio 12: Problem with Matrix
Dear Developers,
motivated by the new Sun Studio checks I compiled R-devel and several of
our packages with Sun Studio 12 on Fedora x64.
Everything worked fine and R-devel runs, with the exception of package
Matrix where compilation crashes with the following message. The error
occurs during building of the recommended packages and also if Matrix is
compiled separately:

'constrained' negative.binomial model estimates
Hello list,
I am not sure if the terminology that I am using here is widely used,
however, I provide an example in the hopes that my problem will become
clear. My basic problem is that I am unsure of how to 'constrain' my
model estimates to reproduce the aggregate (by factor levels) observed
dependent variable for a negative.binomial model. I realize this
sounds rather vague, so I provide
