rank of Matrix
Dear list,
Can anyone tell me how to obtain the rank of a sparse Matrix, for
example from package Matrix (class dgCMatrix)? Here is an example of
QR decomposition of a sparse matrix (from the sparseQR class help).
library(Matrix)
data(KNex)
mm <- KNex$mm
str(mmQR <- qr(mm))
Similarly, using the functions/classes from the relatively new
MatrixModels package:

First call to constructor fails (R.oo)
Hi all,
I'm trying to do some object-oriented programming in R using the R.oo
package.
Right from the start I encountered a strange (at least for me) problem. I
define a new class/constructor based on the R.oo documentation.
However the first attempt to create an object fails:
=== Code: ===
library(R.oo);
setConstructorS3("MyClass",function(param) {
print(param);

glm.nb and anova
Hi,
I am trying to fit a negative binomial model with a number of parasite tapeworms as response variable to geographical coordinates
(actually preparing a trend surface before kriging). When I try an anova, I get warnings:
> glm4.nb<-glm.nb(wb~X4+Y4+I(X4^2)+I(Y4^2))
> anova(glm4.nb)

MKL Acceleration encouraging; need adjust package builds?
Hi Paul,
We've been through this process ourselves for the Revolution R Open project. There are a number of pitfalls to avoid, but you can take a look at how we achieved it in the build scripts at:
https://github.com/RevolutionAnalytics/RRO
There are also some very useful notes in the R Installation guide:

vignette checking woes
Thierry,
I have this:
if (require(MatrixModels) && require(Matrix)) {
X <- model.Matrix(Terms, m, contrasts, sparse = TRUE)
in my function rqss() I've tried variants of requireNamespace too without success.
If I understand properly model.Matrix is from MatrixModels but it calls
sparse.model.matrix which is part of Matrix, and it is the latter function that I'm

Possible with enableJIT function
Thanks. This should be resolved in R-devel(r72788) and R-patched
(r72789)

rJava works on karmic for root but not for user sean
Good afternoon,
A strange one - library(rJava) works for root but not for user sean
On 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10, using R as root (sudo -i), I can say
library(rJava)
and it works fine with no error message of any kind. But logged in as
myself user "sean", it can't start...

Andrew Leach has raised a question about the memory usage of my package nleqslv.
In a model with a loop within a function he has experienced continuously increasing memory usage

MKL Acceleration encouraging; need adjust package builds?
Dear R-devel:
The Cluster administrators at KU got enthusiastic about testing
R-3.2.2 with Intel MKL when I asked for some BLAS integration. Below
I forward a performance report, which is encouraging, and thought you
would like to know the numbers. Appears to my untrained eye there are
some extraordinary speedups on Cholesky decomposition, determinants,
and matrix inversion.

comparative rendering of modeling outputs
This note is to r-devel rather than r-announce because it
notes an experimental package that addresses issues that
intersect with broader developmental issues in R.
I have posted the package

for retrival at

This package addresses the problem of assembling and

approxfun-problems (yleft and yright ignored)
Dear all,
I have run into a problem when running some code implemented in the
Bioconductor panp-package (applied to my own expression data), whereby gene
expression values of known true negative probesets (x) are interpolated onto
present/absent p-values (y) between 0 and 1 using the *approxfun -
function*{stats}; when I have used R version 2.8, everything had
worked fine,
however, after updating

Psssst. The US is asleep - let's talk intern ationalization !!!
And let's also spell things properly! Like 'internationalisation' ...'Weasels have got into your phone system' instead of 'gotten into your phone system...'
And 'please press the hash key..' instead of 'pound key'
There should probably be en_uk, en_us, en_ca, en_za, en_nz, en_oz, en_ie and en_in etc to allow each English-speaking country to localise

I've been running the Wine package in Debian/Woody for quite a while
now, and have been able to run most of the windows programs I want to.
However, for some reason wine just stopped working for me. Here is the

MemoryProblem in R-1.4.1
Hi all,
In a simulation context, I'm applying some my function, "myfun" say, to a
list of glm obj, "list.glm":
>length(list.glm) #number of samples simulated
[1] 1000
>class(list.glm[[324]]) #any component of the list
[1] "glm" "lm"
>length(list.glm[[290]]$y) #sample size
[1] 1000
Because length(list.glm) and the sample size are rather large,
