R helps win competitions
DeaR ComRades, This is a quote from a News article in Science's 11-February issue, about competitions to model data: "For Chris Raimondi, a search-engine expert based in Baltimore, Maryland, and winner of the HIV-treatment competition, the Kaggle contest motivated him to hone his skills in a newly learned computer language called R, which he used to encode the winning data model.

Plotmath: suprscript on scalable delimiter?
ComRades, How do you put a superscript on a scalable delimiter? I want to put 'b' as the power of the expression in the following plot: t <- 1:25 K <- 0.2 y <- ((1-exp(-K*t))/(1-exp(-K*t)*exp(K)))^3 plot(t,y,"l",main="K=0.2, b=3") text(15,5,expression(bgroup("(",frac(1-e^-Kt,1-e^-Kt*e^K),")"))) Plotmath examples in demo(plotmath) do not

[FORGED] Error occurring in "emmeans" package for the two data sets I used. Please help.
Thanks for your kind reply. Problem is solved. However, it's "confidence interval / treatment comparison plot" is not taking main title. And the fonts of axes labels can not be changed using 'cex' parameter. I will appreciate if you could help in this matter too. Dr. A. K. Tinn-R RGui Send problem
ComRades, On a recent Windows XP system that I have to use at work, I installed Tinn-R 2.3.4.4 and R 2.10.1 When I mark-select a piece of code, say summary(x) written in Tinn-R and send it to the RGui using the send button, the RGui console instead of showing me my piece of code, it shows something like source(.trPaths[5], echo=FALSE, max.deparse.length=150) The code is executed fine but if

Support for R in highlight.js
Hello, I'm the maintainer of a syntax highlighting tool highlight.js[1]. Recently the Kaggle project has announced they wanted to sponsor the development of the R highlighting definition for it[2]. I wanted to drop a line about it here since I suspect this list has much more R programmers on it than our small discussion group :-). So if you're interested and don't mind touching a

AIC() vs. mle.aic() vs. step()?
I know this a newbie question, but I've only just started using AIC for model comparison and after a bunch of different keyword searches I've failed to find a page laying out what the differences are between the AIC scores assigned by AIC() and mle.aic() using default settings. I started by using mle.aic() to find the best submodels, but then I wanted to also be able to make comparisons

Fast Two-Dimensional Optimization
Dear R Helpers, I have attempted "optim" function to solve a two-dimensional optimization problem. It took around 25 second to complete the procedure. However, I want to reduce the computation time: less than 7 second. Is there any optimization function in R which is very rapid? PBSmapping, where is Ireland?!
Hi folks, I've been using 'PBSmapping' to make a map of Europe with some labels. I've been using the 'worldLL' PolyData, as my computer is too slow to make my own from the GSHHS files. The only problem is this PolyData does not seem to include Ireland. I have no idea why this should be so, other European islands such as Sardinia etc. are included.

Building Custom GUIs for R
I am looking to build simple GUIs based on the R codes I have. The main objective is to hide the scary R codes from non-programming people and make it easier for them to try out different inputs. For example, 1. The GUI will have means to upload a csv file which will be read by the R code. 2. A button to preprocess data (carried out by a R function behind) 3. A button to build some models
