Statistical data and Map-package
Dear helpeRs, I'm working with the map-package and came upon a problem which I couldn't solve. I hope onee of you can. If not, this can be seen as a suggestion for new versions of the package. I'm trying to create a map of some European countries, filled with colors corresponding to some values. Let's say I have the following countries and I assign the following colors

Can I monitor the iterative/convergence process while using Optim or MaxLik?
Hi R-helpers, Is it possible that I have the estimates from each step/iteration shown on the computer screen in order to monitor the process while I am using Optim or MaxLik? Thanks for your help. Maomao [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Place constrictions on parameters when using Optim and MaxLik
Hi R users, I am trying to restrct the range of two of the parameters in a maximization problem. Both parameters should be between -1 and 1. As far as I know, if I choose the estimation method ="L-BFGS-B" under Optim, I can restrict the parameter space. However, the "L-BFGS-B" always require finite values of the loglik function and cannot get around of the problem if an

Plotting panels at arbitrary places on a map, rather than on a lattice
I think it is easiest to describe what I want in terms of the concrete problem I have. I have data from a number of countries in each of which a sample of people was interviewed. In presenting the results in a forthcoming collaborative publication much emphasis will be placed on the multi-centre nature of the study. Although I suspect colleagues may do this with shaded maps I would prefer to

Can I create an European map using the map function in R
Hi, I am trying to create a spatial weight matrix based on the neighboring relationship among Europan countries. Can I use the map function in R to generate a European map and then use this map to build the w weight matrix? So far, I cannot create a map for Finland using the map function. Also, I am not very sure about the steps in importing external map data and use that information to

Icecast and MySQL Stats
Hi all, my name is Luca Cireddu, I'm from Italy and this is my first e-mail in this list. I'm the Technical Manager at UnicaRadio, University Webradio in Cagliari, Sardinia. We use Icecast as main Relay Server with different audio formats, and we are also testing video streaming using theora/vorbis format. In this period I'm working in Icecast source code to implement a detailed Stats

if statement and truncated distribution
Hi R helpers, I am trying to use the if statement to generate a truncated random variable as follows: if (y[i]==0) { v[i] ~ rnorm(1,0,1) | (-inf ,0) } if (y[i]==1) { v[i] ~ rnorm(1,0,1) | (0, inf) } I guess I cannot use " | ( , ) " to restrict the range of a variable in R. Could you let me know how to write the code correctly in R? Many thanks for your help. Maomao [[alternative

LDAPS & Windows Domain Controller
> Samba 4.13 recently removed this support. > The issue is that while it was possible to use LDAPS in some situations, it was not possible to reliably determine the hostname to verify the TLS certificate, rendering the protection moot. > Furthermore, extensive work would have been required to fully implement the 'channel bindings' required to tie the Kerberos authentication Samba

I'm coming to Paris Dec 19. I was wondering if there was any interest in having an Asterisk get together in Paris sometime near there. Any one out there interested? Anyone in Paris who could help organize something like that? :) Mark

What does this warning message (from optim function) mean?
Hi R users, I am trying to use the optim function to maximize a likelihood funciton, and I got the following warning messages. Could anyone explain to me what messege 31 means exactly? Is it a cause for concern? Since the value of convergence turns out to be zero, it means that the converging is successful, right? So can I assume that the parameter estimates generated thereafter are reliable MLE

Debian Package Behavior Suggestion
Hello, I just did a quick ''apt-get update'' then ''apt-get install shorewall'' from the debian unstable tree. This was on the www.shorewall.net mirror server. And, to my horror, after upgrading the package, it automatically restarted shorewall! Of course I have done this before, but I absent-mindedly just went through the usual procedure for debian upgrades

Probit regression with limited parameter space
Dear R helpers, I need to estimate a probit model with box constraints placed on several of the model parameters. I have the following two questions: 1) How are the standard errors calclulated in glm (family=binomial(link="probit")? I ran a typical probit model using the glm probit link and the nlminb function with my own coding of the loglikehood, separately. As nlminb does not

Multiple simultaneous calls
Hi Guys, I am a novice of Asterisk and I need some experts help to understand what I can get out of it. I need to make multiple calls (let say 50) at once to autoanswering softphones on a LAN and send all of them the same message that they will repeat with loudspeakers in the same environment. I am a little concerned about synchronization of the phones and moreover it is not much clear to me if I

CRAN: How to list a non-Sweave doc under "Vignettes:" on package page?
Hi, is it possible to have non-Sweave vignettes(*) in inst/doc/ be listed under 'Downloads' on CRAN package pages? For instance, in my R.rsp package I have a inst/doc/report.pdf (part of the source *.tar.gz) that is not detected/listed. The PDF is not based on a Sweave vignette but an *.tex.rsp vignette that is dynamically created via inst/doc/Makefile. It is listed (*) BTW, can the

Spare RailsConf Europe ticket up for grabs
We booked our UK techies into RailsConf Europe 2006 and one of them can''t make it?. so (assuming we''re allowed to by the conference) we''d like to make the ticket available to someone as a small "thank you" to the Rails community. I guess we''d like to think that would mean it went to someone who is involved in the community but couldn''t
