what characteristics of model curve do parameters denote
Dear list, I'm trying to fit a chapman-richards equation to my data, only I cannot interpret the parameters a, b and d. I know that the parameter b denotes the asymptote, but for the others I couldn't figure out. But I do need to know this in order to set my starting values. Here's the model: modPoplar<- nls(Diameter ~ d*(1-exp(-b *Age))^a ,start=list(a=20,b=0.9,d=33)) I attached

postResample R² and lm() R²
Hello, I'm with a conceptual doubt regarding Rsquared of both lm() and postResample(library caret). I've got a multiple regression linear model (lets say mlr) with anR² value of 67.52%. Then I use this model pro make predictions with predict() function using the same data as input , that is, use the generated model to predict the value associated with data that I used as input. Next, if

writing dates to a file
Hi, I have attached the data files to this note. I use this code: library(zoo) z1 <- read.zoo("baltimorefludata.txt", format = "%m/%d/%Y", header = TRUE) z2 <- read.zoo("baltimorew.txt", format = "%Y%m%d", header = TRUE) z3<-merge(z1,z2) write.table(z3, "fluweatherdata_baltimore2.txt", sep="\t") R is writing the other data

vegan (ordisurf): R² for smoothed surfaces
Dear r-helpers, I just read in an article by Virtanen et al. (2006) where vegetation-environment relationships are studied by fitting smoothed surfaces on an NMDS ordination using GAMs (Wood 2000). The authors describe, that they used R? as goodness-of-fit statistic, which they compare to the R? of fitted vectors. Calculations were carried out using the package vegan (Oksanen). I know that I can

Creating a .png with just an expression() in it
Hey, I'm trying to create an image file with the results of a regression analysis. In TeX, the line would be something like: $ size = 0.34 + 4.3 var_1 $ Can I create a plot window with just this line in it? I tried playing around with plot.new() or dev.new(), but didn't really find something that worked. Thanks in advance, Alex -- alexx at alexx-fett:~$ vi .emacs

Average R-squared of model1 to model n
Hi, We got a question about interpretating R-suqared. The actual outputs for a test dataset is X=(x1,x2, ..., xn). model 1 predicted the outputs as Y1=(y11,y12,..., y1n) model n predicted the outputs as Y2=(y21,y22,..., y2n) ... model m predicted the outputs as Ym=(ym1,ym2,..., ymn) Now we have two ways to calculate R squared to evaluate the average performance of committee model. Setting the language of Rs error messages
Hi, My R has been installed on a Ubuntu linux computer in Germany. The error messages I get are in German, for example: In min(magnitudes) : kein nicht-fehlendes Argument f?r min; gebe Inf zur?ck I would like those to be displayed in English, for pasting them into google. I tried searching for "R language", which brings me a ton of results for.. well, the R language :) "R german

how to store a vector of vectors
Hi, I'm trying to write a function to determine the euclidean distance between x (one point) and y (a set of n points). How should I pass y to the function? Until now, I used a matrix like that: | [,1] [,2] [,3] [1,] 0 2 1 [2,] 1 1 1 | Which would pass the points (0,2,1) and (1,1,1) to that function. However, when I pass x as a normal (column) vector,

Passing par()-parameters to many plot()s in a function
Hi, I am implementing a function which generates about 10 .pdf plots in the current directory. I need the graphic to fit into a LaTeX-Presentation-slide, so the outer margin should be removed (this is the way to do it, right?): I am having trouble finding out where to put the par command(s). Is one enough or should I put them before and after /every/ plot() command? This is how I tried to do

saslauthd attack
I'm seeing a lot of activity over the last two days with what looks to be a kiddie script. Mostly trying to access several of our servers with the username anna. All failed... in fact I don't think we have a user anna on any of our servers. Meanwhile... I'm running Sendmail. This pertains to Centos 4 and 5 servers. I'm also running fail2ban on some and Ossec on others. So far,

Samba 2.2.5-1, Error Creating Directories
Hi! This is a really weird problem, I hope, someone can help me out there. First of all, I put my smb.conf on the web, you can find it here[0]. The Sambaserver (ESS-LINUX) is just an ordinary workstation (in the terms of SMB) and uses the PDC (ESS_SERVER) for authentication (see "password server"-directive). Nearly everything works fine. Each authenticated user gets his home-directory

ggpliot2: reordering of factors in facets facet.grid(). Reordering of factor on x-axis no problem.
Hi everyone (again), before you all start screaming that the reordering of factors has been discusse on several threads and is not particular to ggplot2, hear me out. I can easily reorder my x-axis factor in facet.grid() in ggplot2. What I cannot reorder are the factors represented on the strips. I can see that the graphs are changing, so I am afraid of what it is I am doing. Why is ggplot2
