Vectorizing sample()
I am simulating sickness among a group of families. Part of the task is
to randomly draw who in the family will be sick, randomly drawing from
family ID's where Dad =1, Mom = 2, Kid1 = 3, Kid2 = 4., etc. My census of
Dads is of the form shown below.
Dad_ID Spouse (Y=1;N=0) #Kids #People_Becoming_Sick

R package that has (much) the same capabilities as SAS v9 PROC GENMOD
I need capabilities, for my data analysis, like the Pinheiro & Bates
S-Plus/R package nlme() but with binomial family and logit link.
I need multiple crossed, possibly interacting fixed effects (age cohort of
twin when entered study, sex of twin, sampling method used to acquire twin
pair, and twin zygosity), a couple of random effects other than the cluster
variable, and the ability to

beginner programming question
Hi all,
The last e-mails about beginners gave me the courage to post a question;
from a beginner's perspective, there are a lot of questions that I'm
tempted to ask. But I'm trying to find the answers either in the
documentation, either in the about 15 free books I have, either in the
help archives (I often found many similar questions posted in the past).
Being an (still actual)

kinship package example data
I've been looking at the kinship package which looks as though it
might be appropriate for my purposes. What I can't find is any
reference to the data that is used in the example code. A dataframe
called d10 with column names, upn, dadid, momid, sex and affect is
required. One can get an idea of what sort of values should be in
most columns from the description in the pedigree function,

MLE Estimation of Gamma Distribution Parameters for data with 'zeros'
Greetings, all
I am having difficulty getting the fitdistr() function to return without
an error on my data. Specifically, what I'm trying to do is get a
parameter estimation for fracture intensity data in a well / borehole.
Lower bound is 0 (no fractures in the selected data interval), and upper
bound is ~ 10 - 50, depending on what scale you are conducting the
analysis on.

understanding virtual classes and extensions thereof
I am having some trouble creating a hierarchy of virtual classes
(akin to the class structure in the 'Matrix' package). I think they
arise from my not understanding the best way to specify virtual
subclasses of a virtual class. please see questions below code.
setClass("mom")
setClass("kid1", representation("mom", "VIRTUAL"))

Pedigree / Identifying Immediate Family of Index Animal
I have a data frame containing the Id, Mother, Father and Sex from about
10,000 animals in our colony. I am interested in graphing simple family
trees for a given subject or small number of subjects. The basic idea is:
start with data frame from entire colony and list of index animals. I need
to identify all immediate relatives of these index animals and plot the
pedigree for them. We're

skillride and yahoo messenger quit responding
I have only tried to run these two programs. I am using wine 1.1 and whenever I try to run skillride.exe ( an online poker game) the program will start and I can select a table, but it will stop responding when I attempt to sit down at the table. Yahoo Messenger 8.1 also freezes when I attempt to log in.
Thanks again.

Arbitrary number of covariates in a formula
Hello!
I have something like this:
test1 <- data.frame(intx=c(4,3,1,1,2,2,3),

x1=c(0,2,1,1,1,0,0),
x2=c(1,1,0,0,2,2,0),
sex=c(0,0,0,0,1,1,1))
and I can easily fit a cox model:
library(survival)

Story Runner, autoincrementing
I''ve written a story and I run into a snag.
I''ve written the create_forum method and told it to set the id to 1
but when it creates the forum the id is autoincremented.
My forums table is empty but the id keeps incrementing the newest record on
creation.
When I run the story it comes out as something like 59 which fails my story
because I''m asking it to look at /forums/1

NAs in optim

I am trying to maximize a utility function using optim. I have a problem
with optim, since some of the values in the caw, mom, me and btm matrixes in
the code bellow are missing. Is there a handy way just to skip the missing
values in the loop?
