save to file
Hi, What's the equivalent of "Save to File" from the R console File menu on an R routine? Just trying to capture the whole R console into a text file when my code fails. Felipe D. another question on shapefiles and geom_point in ggplot2
Manuel: I changed your variable names from x to 'long' and y to 'lat' on the riqueza_out.csv file. The code below should do what you want. Also, since the legend title is kind of long, I broke it down into three lines so you can see more plot area. I am cc'ing the other groups so more people use it if needed. library(rgdal) library(ggplot2) library(sp) library(maptools)

arrange data
Dear r-users,   I have daily rainfall data from 1971 to 2000.  I would like to extract november and december data only.  I would also like to do column bind for november and december, therefore I would like to delete 31 December from december data so that the length of november and december are the same.  Hope somebody can help me.  I tried this below:   > kuantan.dt.1 <-

nls question
Hi:  Using nls how can I increase the numbers of iterations to go beyond 50.  I just want to be able to predict for the last two weeks of the year.  This is what I have:  weight_random <- runif(50,1,24)  weight <- sort(weight_random);weight weightData <- data.frame(weight,week=1:50)                          weightData plot(weight ~ week, weightData) M_model <- nls(weight ~ alpha +

apply is slower than for loop?
I thought the "apply" functions are faster than for loops, but my most recent test shows that apply actually takes a significantly longer than a for loop. Am I missing something? It doesn't matter much if I do column wise calculations rather than row wise ## Example of how apply is SLOWER than for loop: #rm(list=ls()) ## DEFINE VARIABLES mu=0.05 ; sigma=0.20 ; dt=.25 ; T=50 ;

replacing elements of a zoo object
Why doesn't this work? x = zoo(1:5, as.Date('2001-01-01')+1:5) x[as.Date('2001-01-05')] x[as.Date('2001-01-05')] = 0 x I think this is especially bad because it doesn't cause an error. It lets you do something to x, but then you can't see x again to see what it did. [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

read.table performance
** Disclaimer: I'm looking for general suggestions ** I'm sorry, but can't send out the file I'm using, so there is no reproducible example. I'm using read.table and it's taking over 30 seconds to read a tiny file. The strange thing is that it takes roughly the same amount of time if the file is 100 times larger. After re-reviewing the data Import / Export manual I think

ggplot2 - extracting values of smooth
Suppose that I'm working on Hadley's diamond dataset and I want to review the relationship between price, colour and carat. I might run the following: library(ggplot2) #plot scatter and add some hex binning q<-qplot(carat,price,data=diamonds, geom=c("hex"), main="Variability of Diamond Prices by Carat and Colour") #facet to get one scatter for

How to pass a list of parameters into a function
Does anyone know how to pass a list of parameters into a function? for example: somefun=function(x1,x2,x3,x4,x5,x6,x7,x8,x9){ ans=x1+x2+x3+x4+x5+x6+x7+x8+x9 return(ans) } somefun(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) # I would like this to work: temp=c(x3=3,x4=4,x5=5,x6=6,x7=7,x8=8,x9=9) somefun(x1=1,x2=2,temp) # OR I would like this to work: temp=list(x3=3,x4=4,x5=5,x6=6,x7=7,x8=8,x9=9)

where did ggplot go?
This must be explained somewhere, but I've been searching for a couple of hours and not found it. What happened to ggplot? It appears to be missing on CRAN, except in the archives. http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ggplot/index.html Has ggplot2 replaced ggplot? I was trying to run some examples and found that "pscontinuous" and "ggline" are not part of ggplot2.

simple subset question
 Hi, Consider the small dataset below, I want to subset by two variables in one line but it wont work...it works though if I subset separately. I have to be missing something obvious that I did not realize before while using subset.. fish <- structure(list(IDWeek = c(27L, 28L, 29L, 30L, 31L, 32L, 33L, 34L, 35L, 36L, 37L, 38L, 39L, 40L, 41L, 42L, 43L, 44L, 45L, 46L, 47L, 48L, 49L, 50L, 51L,

Zooming in to a ggplot (a sort of ylim, but ylim won't do)
Dear Helpers, I wonder whether you might be able to help me. I have a plot composed of ggplot (and a follow on geom_smooth call). I would like to restrict the display range of the y axis to a smaller range, a sort of zooming onto a region. I attempted to use ylim, but it will effect the range (i.e. effect the geom_smooth call). Is there any way that I can save the results up to geom_smooth call

The L Word
I've been wondering what L means in the R computing context, and was wondering if someone could point me to a reference where I could read about it, or tell me what it's called so that I can search for it myself. (L by itself is a little too general for a search term). I encounter it in strange places, most recently in the "save" documentation. save(..., list = character(0L),

Possible to access a USB volume by name in windows
On the Mac it's pretty easy to get to a USB drive by name. For example the following command works if you have a USB drive named "MYUSB" setwd('/Volumes/MYUSB') Is there a way to do the same thing in Windows (without knowing the drive letter)? Thanks! [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Testing for arguments in a function
I don't understand how this function can subset by i when i is missing.... ## My function: myfun = function(vec, i){ ret = vec[i] ret } ## My data: i = 10 vec = 1:100 ## Expected input and behavior: myfun(vec, i) ## Missing an argument, but error is not caught! ## How is subsetting even possible here??? myfun(vec) Is there a way to check for missing function arguments, *and*

curve fitted ... how to retreive data
Dear R users, I have now managed to fit the curve using the thin plate spline as follows: library(mgcv) b <- gam(y~s(x1,x2,k=100),data =dat) vis.gam(b) What I want now is to get the fitted data for y and copy it so that I use it for further analysis. Many thanks in advance mintewab

ggplot - adding regression lines
Hi I am using ggplot to overlay two regression lines on a scatter plot each corresponding to a treatment group. The default plot gives a different slope for each treatment group. However, in some cases i want the lines to be parallel -ie no significant interaction. My code: ggplot(data=df,X,Y,colour=treatment) + geom_point() + geom_smooth(method="lm") I think i use the
