pictex
The example at ?pictex does not work (the driver apparently uses 'rotatebox') for me as stated. It did compile after including the graphicsx package. A MWE is at the help page for pictex. I tried to get in touch with Valerio but his email bounced. Probably we want to add a \usepackage{graphicsx} to the help page and try to track down Valerio. Cheers, Kyle This is pdfTeX, Version

Vignette problem
I'm having a problem rebuilding a package, new to me in R 2.15.0 (Linux) It hits all that contain the line \usepackage[pdftex]{graphics} and leads to the following when running R CMD check on the directory. (I do this often; a final run on the tar.gz file will happen before submission.) Since I float and resize my figures, removing the line is fatal in other ways.

Latex and r
Dear R?ers I?m trying to get a summary table using latex and summary in the rms package to no avail. I?m running R 2.10.1, Mac OS X snow leopard and I have the mactex 2009 distribution installed. Any obvious things I?m missing? //M options(digits=3) set.seed(173) sex <- factor(sample(c("m","f"), 500, rep=TRUE)) age <- rnorm(500, 50, 5) treatment <-

bash help please
I'd like to make MikTeX the default TeX package in 2.2.0, but we still need to let people use other packages. The problem is that MikTeX wants a command line option --include-directory $R_HOME/share/texmf, while other packages specify includes via environment variables, and barf when they see the unexpected option. The choice should be controlled by the user's settings in the MkRules

R Graphics: Saving PDF and other formats from Windows Graphic Device for LaTeX
Hello, I can't seem to save (or find the default location) when I use the Window Graphic Device's pull down menu. It does not seem to save to the directory I have set using "setwd(...)". How do I make the pull down menu's work? What is the best format to save R graphics for inclusion into a LaTeX documents? I will use PdfTex, or LaTeX -> PS -> PsToPdf to generate the

minor oddity in pdf() help page
The following paragraph from ?pdf struck me as a bit odd: 'pdf' writes uncompressed PDF. It is primarily intended for producing PDF graphics for inclusion in other documents, and PDF-includers such as 'pdftex' are usually able to handle compression. Should that be "...and PDF-includers such as 'pdftex' are usually _un_able to handle

Problems with make pdf (R-patched_2002-07-15.tar.gz)
After configure, make and make check on a linux Suse 7.3 box, I run make dvi and make info with no problems but get a lot of garbage to my screen during make pdf. Is this normal? Is there a bug in this part of the installation? This is part of what I get on the screen: humboldt:/usr/local/R-patched # make pdf make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/R-patched/doc' make[2]: Entering

Plot scales
I remember reading somewhere that locations on plots (in my case, arguments x and y for legend()) can be specified in several scales besides the usual data scale. I would like to set x and y as proportions of total plot size or something similar. Can anyone steer me to documentation on how to do it? -- Michael Prager, Ph.D. <Mike.Prager at noaa.gov> NOAA Center for

latex warning
Dear all, I am getting an R CMD check warning about the PDF manual. I am having a hard time finding out what is wrong, here is the log of the Rd2pdf call. The full check (and other) log is at https://api.travis-ci.org/jobs/46373922/log.txt?deansi=true if anybody is interested, and the package itself is here: https://github.com/metacran/r-builder/tree/bintex/rbuildertest Thanks, Best, Gabor

PR #1833 Clarification (PR#1890)
This is (correctly) filed under "non-reproducible." The corresponding notes say "solved by re-installing Windows (private comm)." I would like to clarify that this was solved by re-installing the patch known as "Windows 2000 Service Pack 2," not by reinstalling Windows itself. Perhaps my original message was not clear. I point this out because installing the

error in building R-1.9.0 sources under Win32
I am trying to compile the R-dev sources on WinXP using mingw 3.1.0-1 and fpTeX 0.7. In the past I have been able to build the sources fine but now I receive an error in the process that I havent seen reported on the list before. Everything works fine until I get to 'make docs'. I now get the message below while building the R-admin manual (refman.pdf builds fine) and the make process

Installing packages into updated R
A minor inconvenience in updating an R installation is remembering which packages were installed previously. Has anyone written a script to inspect a previous installation, then get & install the same packages into the new installation? -- Michael Prager NOAA Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research Beaufort, North Carolina 28516 Opinions expressed are personal, not official.

More on global environment
To follow up on my previous question, suppose a user R session wants to unload one workspace and load another within an R session. Is the following the correct sequence? 1. save.image() to save the current workspace as .Rdata in the current working directory. 2. rm(list=ls()) to remove everything from the workspace. 3. setcwd("xxx") to set the new working directory. 4.

Building R package: make pdf & _masked_by_GlobalEnv
Hi.... I am assembling an R package (under Windows XP, R v.2.3) and have a very basic question. Running R CMD build does not generate a pdf. R CMD check generates a .dvi, but I cannot figure out how to automatically create the pdf. I thought from reading the "writing r extensions' manual that R CMD build was supposed to generate the pdf. I am having no success using various

Time for Usenet R Group?
I probably shouldn't suggest this, because I can't volunteer to implement it. However, I bring it up in the hopes that if (1) others agree and (2) the R core group think it a good idea that a suitable volunteer will come forward. I am finding that the flood of R email messages is becoming difficult to deal with, even using filters, etc., in my email client. Would we be better

Oceanographic lattice plots?
R 1.8.0 on Windows XP Professional. A huge THANK YOU to the R Team for this marvelous software. I am making lattice plots of oceanographic data. The usual layout does not conform to plotting conventions that marine scientists use when depth is the independent variable. Under those conventions, plots are made with the origin at the upper left, depth on the vertical axis (increasing as it

Request: Documentation of formulae
In working through material on p.272 of MASS (4th ed.), I came across the following model formula: pet1.lm <- lm(Y ~ No/EP - 1, Petrol) I was at a loss to understand the use of "/" until I looked in "An Introduction [!] to R," where I found the explanation. My request is that more complete material on model formulae be lifted from "Introduction to R" (or

pdf() Export Problem: Circles Interpreted as Fonts from ggplot2 Graphics
Good Evening: I am putting together a large report with plots created in R, V 2.12.0. Most of the plots are created using ggplot2 V0.8.9. I use R's pdf() command to export the plot to a pdf file. I am exporting the plots and attempting to edit the title text in?Inkscape?primarily because ggplot2 does not support superscript or subscript formatting in the title text. For the report I am
