Trying to create pulldown select menu for US State form fiel
I noticed there is a country_select. Is there anything like
us_state_select maybe?
More specifically - I''m wondering if I manually have to populate an
array with all the U.S. state abbreviations so users can select which
state they live in while entering their mailing address.

normalized frequency histogram
Hi folks
I'm trying to plot a normalized frequency histogram of some data.
After checking the docs, it seems there is no built in feature for this.
from the definition for normalized frequency, I need to divide the
relative frequency by the size of the intervals being used.
So I could divide the series by this interval length, and then plot the
relative frequency.
The problem is

belongs_to more than one model
Suppose I have one table:
states

statename
And I have two other tables that contains states:
houses

How would my model relationships look like?

class House < ActiveRecord::Base

Introduction to maps (of Denmark)?
Dear R-listers,
I am using R for Windows Vista 64-bit. I have no experience working with
maps, but now I have to plot a map of Denmark in which each Danish
county is color-coded according to its incidence rate of a particular
disease. My problem is that I don't know where to start. I have read the
help files to packages like 'mapplot', and their examples indicate that

help color coding map in R
I am trying to create a map with selected states based on highest to lowest mean cost. The following code properly selects the correct states, and the legend is properly color coded with ranges, but the colors per range does not match the state colors. I need help getting the state colors to match the ranges outlined in the legend. I have tried ordering the mean amounts and this correctly creates

alaska map?
Hello,
I've installed the Becker and Wilks maps, mapdata, and mapproj packages
so I can begin to try these out for some work I need to do on a map of
Alaska but I don't know where to find a map of Alaska. Has anyone solved
this already and could help?
Thanks very much in advance,
Caitlin

Histogram with two groups on the same graph (not on separate panels)
I have been trying to produce a histogram that has two groups (male and female
snakes) on the same graph (either superimposed or each frequency bar appears
side by side). I found a couple of functions for superimposed histogram written
by other people.
The below is the codes I used for my data containing a column of svl (body size;
snout-vent length) and another column of sex (male or female).

dividing vectors into bins with equal widths
Hi R-users,
I am trying to divide a vector (say X) into equal frequency bins. If one uses the hist()
function, then a histogram is plotted, but with bins of equal widths, and not with bins
having the same number of data points.
I have then tried the histogram() function as follows:
histogram(X, nint=10, breaks=NULL, equal.widths=F)
This works as I want. However, I can't extract which

ANN: Alaska.rb - Polar bears, igloos and sled dogs... oh my!
Is anyone else here from Alaska interested in a ruby users group to meet in
Anchorage once a month? It might be a long shot but I thought i''d put the
possibility of such a group out there if others are interested.
If so, we''ll coordinate some times that work.

setting breaks in hist
Dear R People:
Is there a way to "guarantee" that breaks=n will give you exactly n
breaks, please?
I'm fairly certain that the answer is "no", but thought I'd check.
Thanks,
Erin

Alaska and Hawaii map data?
I can plot each county of the contiguous 48 states or all of them using
variations of
map('county', region=c('wisconsin' . . . .)
in the maps package. I was wondering whether similar data was available for
Alaska and Hawaii? I was also wondering if there was a database that listed
FIPS codes for the counties in Alaska and Hawaii. Similar to 'county.fips'.

feed cut() output into goodness-of-fit tests
Hello,
My question is assuming I have cut()'ed my sample and look at the
table() of it, how can I compute probabilities for the bins? Do I have
to parse table's names() to fetch bin endpoints to pass them to
p[distr-name] functions? i really don't want to input arguments to PDF
functions by hand (nor copy-and-paste way).

How to sum values across multiple variables using a wildcard?
I have a dataframe called "data" with 5 records (in rows) each of
which has been scored on each of many variables (in columns).
Five of the variables are named var1, var2, var3, var4, var5 using
headers. The other variables are named using other conventions.
I can create a new variable called var6 with the value 15 for each
record with this code:
> var6=var1+var2+var3+var4+var5

thematic map of USA
My goal is to prepare a thematic map of the US, with states shaded
according to their values for a variable of interest. I would like to
include an inset for Alaska in the upper left and an inset for Hawaii in
the lower left. If possible, I'd like to use Albers conic projection, or
something similar. Thus far I have tried using the maps package with
its state database (which omits

USA map with all states
Hi R Gurus!
There was a function in S called "usa()" which would plot the US.
I found map('usa') in R for the lower 48 states. Is there a way to
include Alaska and Hawaii as well, please?
Thanks,

Updating a hexbinplot
Dear all,
Considering this simple example of hexbinplot:
mixdata <-
data.frame(x = c(rnorm(5000), rnorm(5000,4,1.5)),
y = c(rnorm(5000), rnorm(5000,2,3)),
a = gl(2, 5000))
fig <- hexbinplot(y ~ x | a, mixdata)
print(fig)
update(fig, colramp = BTC)
produces a bad (non-updated) legend. Compare it with:
hexbinplot(y ~ x | a, mixdata, colramp = BTC)

Maps in R
Is there a way to generate maps in R. Specifically, I have calculated
estimates of intra-regional inequality for US states, and would like to
project that information onto a map.
