Manual page example of plot.window needs fixing
I was looking at the example on the manual page of plot.window, and noticed that it needs fixing - names(eurodist) should now be labels(eurodist): --- /home/rsb/topics/R-2.2.0/src/library/graphics/man/plot.window.Rd 2005-04-18 12:18:59.000000000 +0200 +++ plot.window.Rd 2005-10-11 21:08:57.000000000 +0200 @@ -48,6 +48,6 @@ ry <- range(y <- -loc[,2]) plot(x, y, type="n",

data(eurodist) and PCA ??
If I perform PCA on the 'eurodist' data, should I get an accurate geographic layout of the cities with biplot? (barring inversions, i.e. their is no way to define north.. but you get the idea...) I have a complex distance matrix, and I am thinking about how to cluster it and how to visualize the quality of the resulting clusters. If I could 'see' the clusters in space I could

eurodist example dataset is malformed
The eurodist dataset (my favorite for mds) is malformed. Instead of a standard distance matrix, it's a data frame. The rownames have gotten 'bumped' to a new anonymous dimension "X". It's possible to fix the data, but it messes up a lot of example code out there. X Athens Barcelona Brussels Calais ... 1 Athens 0 3313 2963 3175 2 Barcelona

cmdscale problem
Dear R developers, there appears to be a small problem with function cmdscale: for non-Euclidean distance matrices, using option add=FALSE (the default), cmdscale misses the smallest eigenvalue. This affects GOF statistic g.1 (See Mardia, Kent + Bibby (1979): Multivariate Analysis, eq. (14.4.7). The corresponding formula in Cox + Cox (2001): Multidimensional Scaling, 2nd ed., p 38, would

Version 1.5.1 STILL failing make check.
I tried setting CFLAGS="-g -O" in config.site and got the same errors from running ``make check''. Then I tried setting CC=cc in config.site, and the damned thing failed again (but differently). Now at least ``!is.nan(var(1))'' is TRUE, as it should be. The problem comes from lapack. At the end of .../test/Examples/base-Ex.Rout.fail we find: > loc <-

Intermittant hang in cmdscale (PR#2323)
Full_Name: Cam Webb Version: 1.6.0 (fink X11 compile) OS: Mac OS X (Jaguar) Submission from: (NULL) (64.168.28.87) This is an unpredictable, intermittant hang during cmdscale of the mva library. Some data never cause a problem, other data always do, abut I can't track down the difference in the structure of the data. Sometimes the function will work for `difficult' data after it has

R-beta: Problem with cmdscale on R for W95
I'm using rseptbeta for w95, I tried to do: > library(mva) > data(eurodist) > cmdscale(eurodist) Error in .C("dblcen", x, as.integer(n)) : C/Fortran function not in load table > how can I solve this problem? convert dataframe to matrix for cmdscale
I have a dataframe like this (toy example): x y z "a" "a" 0 "a" "b" 1 "a" "c" 2 "b" "a" .9 "b" "b" 0 "b" "c" 1.3 "c" "a" 2.2 "c" "b" 1.1 "c" "c" 0 The observations are from a matrix like this: c 2.2 1.1 0.0 b 0.9 0.0

(no subject)
can you recommend a good manual for R that starts with a data set and gives demonstrations on what can be done using R? I downloadedR Langauage definition and An introduction to R but haven't found them overly useful. I'd really like to be able to follow some tutorials using a dataset or many datasets. The datasets I have available on R are Data sets in package 'datasets':

R-devel on alpha Tru64: cxml/dxml problem (PR#977)

Support for transparency in metafile export & support for export to Powerpoint
Dear all, Further to my previous message I now made a one-line convencience function to export your currently active graphics window/plot to either Word or Powerpoint in Office-native vector-based DrawingML format using either export2ppt(file="plot.pptx") or export2doc(file="plot.docx") : see

Using metric scaling
I want to enter a symmetric matrix containing distances for use in the cmdscale() metric scaling function. The matrix currently sits on a file in lower triangular form looking like this: 1 AWANUI RIVER .000 2 BLENHEIM .510 .000 3 COLLINGWOOD .510 .109 .000 4 FOXTON .510 .141 .141 .000 5 GISBORNE .549 .549 .549

hy guys i have one question :) i have two vectors markets and price market <- c(1, 5, 7, 9, 9, 6, 5, 4, 4, 3, 1, 2, 1) price <- c(100, 20, 30, 10, 50, 23, 23, 33, 96, 6, 4, 38, 96) i would like sum prices: market 1: (100+4+96), market 2: (38),..., market 9: (10+50) ao i would like get this result: (200, 38, ..., 60) and i don't wanna use while, for loops... is there any other function

R 2.3.0 is released
I've rolled up R-2.3.0.tar.gz a short while ago. This version contains several changes and additions, mostly incremental. See the full list of changes below. You can get it (in a short while) from http://cran.r-project.org/src/base/R-2/R-2.3.0.tar.gz or wait for it to be mirrored at a CRAN site nearer to you. Binaries for various platforms will appear in due course. There is also a

conditional calculations per row (loop versus apply)
Hi all, I'm hoping someone might help with a query about conditionally applying formulas to a dataframe. In essence I have 3 lookup tables (Table A, B & C) and a dataframe with a variable Type.Code, which identifies the Lookup Table to which each record belongs. The lookup tables reference different sensor types for which I need apply a different formula to values in Column3 in each row

Modify not delete
I have seen this question asked and answered many times in a google search but the answers do not always match. I need to configure samba to be able to write but not delete, and to be able to modify and add directories. One person said use file mask of 777 and directory mask of 755. But with this setting they could not add directories. Anouther person said just compile with acl. Is there an easy
