Building PHP PECL modules
I'm attempting to build some PECL modules on fully updated CentOS 4.2 system. Preferably pack them into nice RPM packages. However, seems I'm missing something. For example, this is what I get for sqlite module: $ pear makerpm SQLite-1.0.3.tgz `phpize' failed The php-devel package is installed (so I do have phpize command). It's just that it is failing. If I unpack the

maptools no such file
Hello, I'm having problems reading a shapefile with read.shape (maptools). I'm absolutely sure my file is there, but I get "no such file". The wd is ok, since read.table for example does find the file. > getwd() [1] "D:/somedirectory/R scripts" > read.table("cities.shp") Error in read.table("cities.shp") : empty beginning of file In addition:

barplot problem
Hello, I'm trying to find out how I can move the y axis label of a horizontal barplot further away from the axis, in order to avoid overlap between the names (which I have rotated using las=1) and the label. I have been fiddling with the graphical parameters but nothing seems to work. Maybe a graphical representation of the graphical parameters would be helpful (cf the CSS box model).

number precision
Hi, I'm trying to find a way to determine how many digits a number has. I tried using nchar(paste(number)), but unfortunately paste will reduce 8.00 to "8". Any thoughts? curve fitting problem
I'm trying to fit a function y=k*l^(m*x) to some data points, with reasonable starting value estimates (I think). I keep getting "singular matrix 'a' in solve". This is the code: ox <- c(-600,-300,-200,1,100,200) ir <- c(1,2.5,4,9,14,20) model <- nls(ir ~ k*l^(m*ox),start=list(k=10,l=3,m=0.004),algorithm="plinear") summary(model) plot(ox,ir) testox <-

legitimate use of :::
Hi, So now R CMD check starts to warn against :::, but I believe sometimes it is legitimate to use it when developing R packages. For example, I have some utils functions that are not exported but I want to share them across the packages that I maintain. I do not need to coordinate with other authors about these internal functions since I'm the only author and I know clearly what I'm

iax.cc / sixtel are they legitimate?
Does anyone have any experience with iax.cc/sixtel? Are they a legitimate company? From their website it looks like you can get a private incoming 800 number for 30 cents/month plus 2 cents/minute. Somehow that pricing seems a little cheap for a DID number. I assume there has to be some minimum usage or something. Any info as far as actual costs and/or voice quality would be appreciated.

Desolve package: How to pass thousand of parameters to C compiled code?
Hi, I have used DeSolve package for my ODE problem regarding infectious disease transmission and currently am trying to pass lots (roughly a thousand) of model parameters to the C compiled model (I have to use C compiled code instead of R code purely because of the speed). I can't go define it one by one as it gonna take ages to finish and also quite difficult to revise. I have read the

Asymmetric routing and firewalls dropping UDP packets
We are running tinc (v. 1.0.26) in switch mode with bmx6 (another mesh protocol) running on top of the tap0 interface on about 25 devices. The asymmetric routing of UDP packets is causing my firewall and I presume others to drop some of the packets, since there are no outbound SYN packets originating from the device running tinc. Is there any way to mitigate this issue besides enabling tcponly

Shorewall 2.0.16
This release back-ports the DROPINVALID shorewall.conf option from 2.2.0. 1) Recent 2.6 kernels include code that evaluates TCP packets based on TCP Window analysis. This can cause packets that were previously classified as NEW or ESTABLISHED to be classified as INVALID. The new kernel code can be disabled by including this command in your /etc/shorewall/init file: echo 1

wireless card for CentOS
Hi, I'll need to buy a new wireless card. I need a recommendation for PCMCIA wireless card that simply works with CentOS out of the box. By "works out of the box", I mean that it doesn't need ndis wrapper (or whatever it is called), kernel hacks, or whatever. Thanks

making a route sticky
Is it possible to have a route stick in the kernel, even if device it points to goes to roller coaster up and down drive. For example. I have an ADSL modem and am doing VPN over it. There's a route needed for VPN added like this: ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 via 1.2.3.4 src 192.168.2.1 There are two problems with it: a) if ADSL link is down when above command is executed, the route

Default Firewall Entries
Hello CentOS, I'm curious... there seems to be a couple of default firewall rules that I'm not familiar with in the CentOS 4.0 # Firewall configuration written by system-config-securitylevel # Manual customization of this file is not recommended. *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :RH-Firewall-1-INPUT - [0:0] -A INPUT -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -A FORWARD
