Request - adding recycled "lwd" parameter to polygon
Hello dear members of R-help and R-core mailing list,
I am not sure if this request is a "ticket" that should be filled somewhere
outside the mailing list. If so, I apologize for not doing and would like
to know where I should have filled it.
And to the subject matter:
I would like to use a command like this:
plot(c(1,8), 1:2, type="n")
polygon(1:7, c(2,1,2,NA,2,1,2),

seq.Date requires by
Hi,
What is the reason for seq.Date to require the 'by' argument and not to
default it to 1 in the example below?
> seq(from=as.Date("1996-01-01"), to=as.Date("1996-12-01"))
Error in seq.Date(from = as.Date("1996-01-01"), to =

axis colors in pairs plot
The following command produces red axis line in a pairs
plot:
pairs(iris[1:4], main = "Anderson's Iris Data -- 3 species",
pch = "+", col = c("red", "green3", "blue")[unclass(iris$Species)])
Trying to fool pairs in the following way produces the
same plot as above:

Plot 3d density
I want to create a 3d plot with densities.
I use the function density to first create a 2d dimensional plot for
specific x values, the function then creates the density and puts them
into a y variable. Now I have a second set of x values and put it
again into the density function and I get a second set of y variables
and so on.... I want to put those sets into a 3d plot, I hope you know
what I

R-beta: help with R simulation
[[this bounced first, because it has 'help' in the Subject line ...

]]
I am a complete novice R programmer. (Though I know C quite well)
I am trying to write some R code to do the following simulation.
There is a 2-frame "movie" of noise and signal dots. the noise
dots have random positions in each frame. The signal dots are
placed randomly in frame 1,

several common sub-axes within multiple plot area
Dear List,
I'd really appreciate tip's or code demonstrating how i can achieve some
common axis labels integrated into a multiple plot.
In my example (below), i'm trying to achieve:
-a single "Results 1 (Int)" centered & btwn row 1 and row 2;
-a single "Results 2 (Int)" centered & btwn row 2 and row 3; and,
-a single "Results 3 (Int)" centered

Lack of protection bug in current R release candidate
The current R release candidate has a lack of protect bug (of very
long standing) with respect to the R_print.na_string and
R_print.na_string_noquote fields of the static R_print structure
declared in Print.h. This shows up very occassionally as incorrect
output from the following lines in reg-tests-2.R:
x <- c("a", NA, "b")
factor(x)
factor(x, exclude="")

transpose of complex matrices in R
Hello everybody
When one is working with complex matrices, "transpose" very nearly
always means
*Hermitian* transpose, that is, A[i,j] <- Conj(A[j,i]).
One often writes A^* for the Hermitian transpose.
I have only once seen a "real-life" case
where transposition does not occur simultaneously with complex conjugation.
And I'm not 100% sure that that wasn't a

Variable centring within "predict.coxph"
Dear R-help,
I am using R-3.3.2 on Windows 10. I teach on a course which has 4 computer practical sessions related to the development and validation of clinical prediction models. These are currently written for Stata and I am in the process of writing them for use in R too (as I far prefer R to Stata!)
I notice that predictions made from a Cox model in Stata are based on un-centred variables,

about prediction with a factor
Hi,
I don't know how to make prediction with a factor in the linear model.
Say
yd=c(1,2,3,4,5)
> sl=c(2,3,4,5,6)
> sex=c("male","male","female","female","male")
> sex=factor(sex)
> m=lm(sl~yd+sex+sex:yd)
How to make a prediction with new data like yd=c(4,5,6,7,8) for male and
female separately ?
Thank you very

Help with installing add-on packages
Dear R users.
Recently I wanted to update my R distribution to the current one (R-2.7.1). I am running a Fedora core 8 distirbution. The installation went fine, but when I tried to add some additional packages the majority made an exit with an error. Only a few least demanding (e.g. RColorBrewer) managed to get through the installation process.
What happened between the versions 2.6.x and 2.7.x

Intercepts in linear models.
A colleague asked me if there is a way to specify with a
***variable*** (say ``cflag'') whether there is an intercept in a
linear model.
She had in mind something like
lm(y ~ x - cflag)
where cflag could be 0 or 1; if it's 0 an intercept should
be fitted, if it's 1 then no intercept.
This doesn't work ``of course''. The cflag just gets treated
as another predictor

gsub patterns from vector elements w/out loop?
Dear list,
I have two vectors:
x <- c("one","two")
y <- paste(rep(x,2),"blah")
I want to replace all occurrences of each element of x in y with
something else, so that y looks like this:
y
[1] "something else blah" "something else blah" "something else blah"
[4] "something else blah"
I can do this using a loop:

Factor levels.
I have factors with levels ``Unit", "Achieved", and "Scholarship"; I
wish to replace these with
"U", "A", and "S".
So I do
fff <- factor(fff,labels=c("U","A","S"))
This works as long as all of the levels are actually present in the
factor. But if ``Scholarship'' is absent
(as if often is) then

Bulk add users and rfc2307 attributes questions
Hi,
I am currently testing a self compiled 4.7.0rc3 AD DC and a samba member server
acting as a file server. I have them configured to use rfc2307 attributes
so that the samba users can access the shares on the member server. Everything
seems to be working as expected.
The problem I am facing is I need to add about 150 users. Once the initial
load of users is added I want to use the rsat tools

Problem installing packages in newer versions of R
Dear all,
I was wandering what could be wrong with my system (regularly updated Fedora core 8) so that installing packages does not succeed with almost every package. I follow the procedure specified in the help file R-admin section 6.3. This is not a feature new to the current version but happened (to me) in the previous version as well. Additionally R-help html pages try to follow wrong links

New variables "remember" how they were created?
Hello all,
I hope this question is appropriate for this ML.
Basically, I am wondering if when you create a new variable, if the
variable holds some information about how it was created.
Let me explain, I have the following code to replicate an example in a
textbook (Greene's Econometric Analysis), using the systemfit package.
