Multiple indexes?
Hi,
I''m indexing records from different database tables and they have
identical column names in many cases. Does this mean I have to create
different indexes for each table?
TIA,
Vamsee.

ActiveRecord callbacks not happening
Hi,
I have a model class like so:
class Candidate < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :name
@@index = FerretConfig::INDEX
def self.after_destroy
puts "Ferret: after_destroy called"
@@index.query_delete("+id:#{self.id} +ferret_class:#{self.class.name}")
optimize_index
end
end
But when I delete a record, the after_destroy is never called.

Some newbie questions
Hi all,
I''m newly discovering Ferret, and just did a crash course on Lucene to
(I get the concepts behind it). But I''m have a few doubts:
1. What is the ''recommended'' way of integrating Ferret into my app now?
The gem version or the plugin?
2. Where do I checkout the plugin from? Do I just copy the version on
the wiki?
Those apart, Ferret is really

Updating Index Is Very Slow
Hi,
I am experiencing very poor performance when updating my index. For
example, to update the index for 10 documents, it is taking 3 to 4
seconds. My index is currently very small... with probably less than
100 docs in it.
I have created my index as follows:
GIFT_INDEX = Index::Index.new(:path => "#{index_dir}/gift", :key =>
''id'', :auto_flush => true)

search_each returns partial results?
Hi,
I''m having some trouble with ferret search_each. I''m posting rails''
script/console output, so I guess you can decrypt it:
>> res = []
=> []
>> index.search_each(''name: a*'') do |doc, score|
?> res << doc
>> end
=> 50
>> res.size
=> 10

I''m guessing the ''=>50''

assert_template fails?
Hi All,
I have a seemingly simple problem - but can''t figure out the problem. I
have a simple functional test like so:
def test_should_show_search_dropdown
get :index
assert_response :success
assert_template :search
end
Inspite of having search.rhtml in /app/views/layout, it fails with an error:
1) Error:
test_should_show_search_dropdown(SearchControllerTest):

Erratic behavior with ferret 0.95 and acts_as_ferret
I am getting this issue also... Does anyone know what this is? When will
Acts as Ferret be available for v10?
Thanks for your help in desperation!

aligning Ferret''s IndexSearcher.search API with Lucene''s
Recently I''ve been revisiting some of my search code. With a greater
understanding of how Java Lucene implements its search methods, I
realized that one level of abstraction is not present in the Ferret
classes/methods. Here are the relevant method signatures:
Ferret''s search methods:
in Ferret::Index::Index:
search(query, options = {}) -> returns a TopDocs

Ferret with relative index paths
Hi,
I have ferret working fine on my Dev machine using a relative index
path as follows:
USER_INDEX = Index::Index.new(:path => "indexes/user", :key => ''id'',
:auto_flush => true)
And the indexes/user directory is located directly off the root of my
project tree.
But when I migrate this same code to my shared TextDrive account,
Ferret cannot find the index

Ferret causing "out of memory"
I am a bit puzzled. I am having issues with memory leaking away. It
seems to be related to searching documents by ''id'' column value.
This is what I am doing:
cached_annotations = Ferret::Index::Index.new(:path =>
"#{RAILS_ROOT}/db/ferret/tmp/annotations", :auto_flush => false)
100000.times { |x| doc=cached_annotations[x.to_s] }
Every 100000.times eats 100MB

Mongrel Cluster Compatibility
Is anyone using ferret with Mongrel/Mongrel-cluster?
The first one or two times I access the ferret index it works fine, but
then it throws a write lock error
StandardError (: Error occured at <index_rw.c>:703
Error: exception 6 not handled: Could not obtain write lock when trying
to write index

I need to do more testing on this to narrow down the problem/solution

ferret acts_as_ferret and performance
hello,
I am actually indexing thousands of 1ko text documents using ferret and
acts_as_ferret, and i face performance problems.
I takes me hours to index 20 000 1ko text documents.
Methology used :
I create and object, fulfill it with the text, and save it. So it is
automaticly indexed.
Is there a way to make it faster ? ( remove the auto optimize option
somewhere ?)
Thank you if you have any

[AAF] concurrency in ferret-server
AFAICT, ferret_server should be able to handle multiple clients
writing to it at once, since ferret itself is thread safe. However,
it''s not clear whether running concurrent index rebuilds on different
would be possible, since they run inside ferret_server. Anyone have
experience with this?

Ferret 0.3.0 released
Hi folks,
This latest release of Ferret has a lot of improvements. There have
been substantial improvements to performance. Try it for yourself to
see. I won''t be publishing any numbers just yet. I will say though
that it''s still about 2-4 times slower than Lucene with the extension
installed. There is also some performance improvements in the pure
Ruby version if you

Is indexing slower?
Hi - I upgraded to Ferret 0.11.3 from 0.10.13.
I used to index 10,000 records in 10 secs. Now it takes 13 minutes.
(That''s a factor of ~75x)
Did something change in the flush semantics, or something?
Thanks!

Free "Agile Web Development with Rails" Text
Hi All,
I''m a RoR n00b that has been lurking for a week or so. About two weeks
ago I bought the text version of Agile Web Development with Rails.
Today, I bought the .pdf version because I run a Sony Notebook and find
a .pdf more user friendly. Therefore I have the text to give away for
free. If anyone in the continental US would like the copy please let me
know and I''ll mail it
