help me understand migrations movie
I''m somewhat of a newbie - played with recent versions of rails a few
mths ago, but have decided to start from scratch with 1.0.
I want to build my new db as much as possible with migrations, so I
watched DHH''s migrations movie from rubyonrails.org.
A few things confuse me:
1. He generates the model ("post") before running rake db_schema_dump.
Is that necessary or

Fastes database server for...
Hi,
I''m currently building a small rails application that needs to store web
traffic information. Similar to google analytics and clicky. (but
simpler) It needs to store refer domains and visitors. Integration goes
through a small javascript snippet.
My question is: What database server is the fastest and should I use for
this app?
I was thinking about SQLlite.
Thanks for your time,

MySql Versus R
Dear R Users,
I use for my data crunching a combination of MySQL and GNU R. I have
to handle huge/ middle seized data which is stored in a MySql
database, R executes a SQL command to fetch the data and does the
plotting with the build in R plotting functions.
The (low level) calculations like summing, dividing, grouping, sorting
etc. can be done either with the sql command on the MySQL side or

Specifying sub-filters
Hello everyone.
I have been looking at the filtering on Mapstraction and realized that it does not allow for sub-filters.
I have modified the applyFilter function to accommodate sub filters.
for example if I wanted to filter all houses that are blue and green and also all warehouses irrespective of color
now I can use
map.addFilter(''Type'', ''eq'', { pFilter:

Dear useRs,
I have written a very simple function to compute some probabilities
on words (function is below). The function includes a which()
statement applied to a vector of characters (word.split): sapply
(word.split, function(x) which(letters==x)). This statement worked
as expected when used outside the global function :

how to know where you've been sourced from
Hello All,
I need a script to perform different actions depending on the file from
which it was source()'d. Thus, my script needs a way to figure out from
whence it was sourced.
There seems to be some relevant information in sys.calls() (see below).
However, I need to get at the name of the file that directly source the
file in question. That is, just one level above. For example, in the

Hi everyone,
I ran a binomial GAM consisting of a tensor product of two continuous
variables, a continuous parametric term and crossed random intercepts on a
data set with 13,042 rows. When trying to plot the tensor product with
vis.gam(), I get the following error message:

A contour plot question - vis.gam () function in "mgcv"
Hi,
Please see the attached contour plot (I am sorry about the big file). This was created using the vis.gam() function in "mgcv" package. However, my question is somewhat broader.
In generating this figure, I first created the contours using vis.gam() and then I plotted the points. These point are plotted on top of the contours so that some of the contour lines are only partially

OpenSSH 2.3.0p1 port to BSDI BSD/OS
BSD/OS 4.2 comes with OpenSSH 2.1.1p4, patched to support BSDI's
authentication library. However, BSDI's patches have several
problems:
1. They don't run the approval phase, so they can allow users to login
who aren't supposed to be able to.
2. They don't patch configure to automatically detect the BSDI auth
system, so they're not ready to use in a general portable
