Different results based on the order of arguments to par
I ran into this issue when trying to modify a subplot (subplot
function in the TeachingDemos package), but here is a more minimal
example of the issue (I don't know that it is serious enough to call a
bug):
This code works how I expect:
dev.new()
hist(rexp(100))
par(plt=c(0.5,0.9,0.5,0.77), usr=c(0,1,0,1))
box() # show new plt region
points(c(0,1), c(0,1), pch=16, col='red', cex=3)

[FORGED] Different results based on the order of arguments to par
Paul,
I was trying to make a minimal self contained example, but I guess I
went too far on the minimizing. The original problem came from code
more like:
library(TeachingDemos)
hist(rexp(1000), main='')
abline( v=1, col='red')
sp.par <- subplot(hist(rnorm(100), main=''), x='topright')
op <- par(sp.par[c('usr', 'plt')])
abline(v=0,

Hello R usuer,
The code given below superimposes a pie diagram on another plot
containing some points. However, I would like to center the pie
diagram on the xy location on the plot, but not on the center. is
there any way to re-center pic diagram.
Any suggestion or better alternative are highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Combining several plots besides a dendrogram?
Hello all,
I would like to recreate the plot shown here (from a useR 2009
presentation):
http://www.agrocampus-ouest.fr/math/useR-2009/abstracts/pdf/Hocking.pdf
I downloaded the code for that image, and discovered that it relies on
external web services, and also having PERL installed on the computer.
I believe this could be done "locally" using the "seqLogo"

Insert .eps files in to an R plot.
Hello Everybody,
I have an eps figure an awesome bacteria and a plot (generated using R) also
in eps format. Now it looks like there is space for only one figure and I
have to insert the picture of the bacteria into the plot. Is there a way to
insert figures (eps/png/jpg) in to plots (may be control over placement of
figures in the plot as well?) ? By plots I mean data represented using axes

PLotting R graphics/symbols without user x-y scaling
Is it possible to add lines or other
user defined graphics
to a plot in R that does not depend on
the user scale for the plot?
For example I have a plot
plot(x,y)
and I want to add some graphic that is
scaled in inches or cm but I do not want the
graphic to change when the x-y scales are
changed - like a thermometer, scale bar or
other symbol -
How does one do this?

subplot()
Hi,
I'm trying to get a color-gradient triangle out of a large plot.
Wonder can subplot() generate a triangle?
So far, I'm only getting rectangles.
Great appreciation for any reply!!

figure with inset
I am trying to plot a figure within a figure (an inset that shows a closeup of
part of the data set). I have searched R-help and other sources but not found a
solution.
What I would like to do is
(1) produce a plot
(2) specify a window that will be used for the next plot (in inches or using the
coordinate system of the plot produced in (1)
(3) overlay a new plot in the window specified under (2)

Nested layout()
Hello,
Is it possible to call a graphing function that uses layout() multiple times and layout those outputs ? Here's a minimal example :
myplot <- function()
{
layout(matrix(1:2, nrow=1), widths = c(1, 1))
plot(1:10)
plot(10:1)
}
layout(matrix(1:2), heights = c(1, 2))

little subplot in corner
I want to draw a little subplot ("overview") into my detailed plot. It
should be placed in say the top right corner and have the size of some

plot(rnorm(100))
#give little density in corner

barplot and map overlay
Hi,
I wonder if it is possible with the graphics package to overlay one or several plots
(barplots, for example) over a map. Data for the map is in a data frame with the
latitude and longitude coordinates, and then:
> plot(map$long, map$lat, type ="l")
produces the map. I want to put each barplot in specific locations on the map, namely

axis labels in multiple plots
Hi,
I'am trying to make a multiple bar plot over a map and I'm having difficulties with the distance
between axes labels and the axis. Trying to control this with mgp does not help because it
controls both axes simultaneously. For example, with default values (mgp = c(3, 1, 0)) y-axis
labels are ok, but x-axis labels are not. Setting mgp = c(3, 0, 0) gives good x-axis labels but

Bubble plot pie chart map
Hello,
I am currently trying to show the abundance of two species of
zooplankton within the North Sea as pie chart bubble plots. I followed
Werner Wernersen's advice in R help
(http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/R/Rhelp02a/archive/48644.html) and used

add lines() to 1st plot in layout() after calling 2nd plot()?
Dear R users,
I create a graphic with two plots side by side using layout(), like this:
layout(matrix(c(1,2),1))
plot(1:10,main="left plot")
lines(c(3:7,7:3),col="red")
plot(10:1,main="right plot")
The lines() obivously get added to the "left plot" plot.
Now, I'm trying to write a function that builds up a plot bit by bit to

diagonally fill a rectangle with color gradient
Hi,
Is it possible to diagonally fill a rectangle with a color gradient? I
noticed that the gradient.rect of plotrix could fill a rect either up and
down or from side to side. I am looking for something similar but fills
diagonally instead, e.g., from the upper left corner to the bottom right.
Does anyone know how to do it in R?
Thanks,

Font size R
Hi everyone.
I'm using this following code:
pdf(file="Fig5.pdf", width = 4.86, height = 6.29, pointsize = 10, family
='Times')
par(mfcol = c(3,2), mai = c(0.4,0.8,0,0), omi = c(0.7, 0, 0.7, 0.1));
hist( rnorm(100) )
dev.off()
When I open this in any vectorial software (like Illustrator), it says that
my font size is 7 instead of 10 that I specified.

funtion equivalent of jitter to move figures on device
hello all,
I'm overlaying numerous scatter plots onto a map (done in PBSmodelling). In this case I'm placing each plot by setting par(fig) to the centroid of map polygons. The location/mapping part is not so important. There are cases of small overlaps for some plots (ie figures) so I'm keen to write or find a function that moves my small scatter plots so they don't overlap. A

looking at the code I'not undertand very well how to add graphs in arbitrary/clever position with an adequate scale.

Phonetic symbols (IPA) in R graphics
Hi all,
I would like to add phonetic symbols in my figures. Usually I typeset
my documents in LaTeX and I use the tipa [1] package to get
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) fonts. So, my problem would be
solved if I could insert LaTeX commands in the text() function (I
guess at least).
I would like to avoid using psfrag (that is, inserting a string in
the eps figure and then substituting it
