Hardware Raid cards RAID 0 / 1
Last week we tried to install Centos on a brand new HP ML150 G2 with AIC-8130/ Marvell SATA Raid card and it was a no go. We tried a few other flavors of Linux as a test and all had trouble as well. Unfortunately time didn't permit so we opted for a Windows solution to get the box into production. We have never had a problem with IDE and Embedded SATA (Non Raid) Next time we want to

robots.txt best practices
I''d been ignoring this error message in my log for a while: ActionController::RoutingError (Recognition failed for "/robots.txt"): I had never touched robots.txt. So I decided to make it a proper robots.txtfile I found this great article... http://www.ilovejackdaniels.com/seo/robots-txt-file/ ...where Dave explains the ins and outs of the file. Before I changed mine, I

Mongrel/Apache and static content
I''m looking for an easy way to have mongrel only serve dynamic railscontent, while letting Apache serve non-Rails content. Unfortunately,it seems that you have to segregate the static content in its ownfolder. That was also the case with the SCGI runner. I used thetrick outlined athttp://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.ruby.rails/23347 to managethis. I was curious if a similar

String "fwrite();" causes 503 error (Passenger or apache?)
Hi, While testing a rails application on DreamHost (mod_rails), I found a really weird problem. If I submit form data which includes "fwrite();" (with semi-colon but without quotes), I get 503 error (Server temporarily unavailable). I checked out rails log file and it didn''t even reach the rails app. I assume the error was from web server. You may test this at

apache -> pen -> mongrel cluster
Hi everyone, Recently, I''ve been reading about different deployment environments for rails and mongrel. One configuration I''ve started seeing is apache -> pen -> mongrel cluster. See http://errtheblog.com/post/35 as an example. Can someone explain to me the benefit of using Apache and Pen as opposed to either using apache as a load balancer or pen by itself?

What's the configure specs for the generic Apache install of CentOS x86_64 5.3?
I'm trying to install apache 2.2.x from a tarball. And it works. But I'm also trying to install modsecure, and I can't get that to work. It might help to know what CentOS uses to install Apache when doing the ./configure. === Al

Limit Request Body Size (Disallow very large File-uploads)
Hello all, For the last couple of days I was trying to get my Apache/mod_proxy/mongrel setup to limit the size of the request body. The setup is as follows: 1.) Apache acts as a reverse proxy by facilitating mod_rewrite and mod_proxy 2.) Requests for non-static files are passed on to a mongrel_cluster 3.) We use mongrel for our Ruby on Rails application Note that due to some restrictions we are

Apache attacks - you can't stop them, or can you?
So I have this nice, simple web server up running. Its purpose is to allow me external testing with HIP, and to provide some files for external distribution. Of course, there it is sitting on port 80 and the attacks are coming in per logwatch report. Examples from the report include: Requests with error response codes 404 Not Found //phpMyAdmin-2.5.1/scripts/setup.php: 1

apache and fcgid
So I decided to just go with apache2 and fcgid. I looked into Mongrel and apache and I looked into lighttpd and fastcgi and found both to be too time consuming and not well enough documented for what I''m doing. My question is, how do I set up apache and fcgid to actually work? I got apache installed. I think I got fcgid installed (I read somewhere all I have to do is move the

Telling Apache Not to Send a Sub-Directory to the Cluster
Howdy, I am using Apache 2.2 and Mongrel with great success. I have a mod_rewrite question and I am NO expert. I think it''s really simple but I haven''t nailed it. I was hoping someone here could help. I''m using Apache conf right out of the cluster example from the Mongrel site. I have a directory under my apps ''public'' directory called

Pass env var from Apache to Mongrel?
I use Apache to serve the static pages and let Mongrel handle Rails requests via mod_rewrite/proxy. Apache RewriteRule can set environment variable on the fly, and this is one of the features I used, set an env var based on domain name. I used to use SCGI Runner which was fine as the env var was passed to Rails via scgi protocol. I seems can''t find a way to set env var in Mongrel on

Apache Security
Hello, I have a server running CentOS 4.3 with all the latest updates. The server in question has been hacked by spammers a few times. The details of the hack have been basically the same every time. I find some directory created by the apache user account in /tmp. The new directory contains an html file, and a list of email addresses to spam and a perl script that spams all those email

repository for mod_security
I want to add mod_security to my Apache server running CentOS 5.3 and am trying to find a repository to get it from. I found it in EPEL, but they have version 2.1.7, which is over a year old according to what I found on the modsecurity.org website. Is there a repository which is keeping this up to date? Or should I just build it from source? -- Bowie
