SMART Prefailure Attribute messages
Hello,
My machine is running Software RAID 5 on /dev/hde1, /dev/hdg1,/dev/hdi1. I
noticed on the log that suddenly we are getting messages such as :
Oct 14 01:27:16 localhost smartd[4801]: Device: /dev/hde, SMART Prefailure
Attribute: 8 Seek_Time_Performance changed from 247 to 246

CentOS 5 grub boot problem
I am trying to upgrade my system from 500GB drives to 1TB. I was able
to partition and sync the raid devices, but I cannot get the new drive
to boot.
This is an old system with only IDE ports. There is an added Highpoint
raid card which is used only for the two extra IDE ports. I have
upgraded it with a 1TB SATA drive and an IDE-SATA adapter. I did not
have any problems with the system

Software RAID woes due to GRUB
Hello,
I recently cloned an old install from one server chassis to another via rsync.
The old setup only had one disk and the new one is set up with two
disks in a softraid.
I managed to solve the problem and thought I'd present it here to
benefit others.

I'm going to guess that there are no IDE drives that have 4096 byte
physical sectors, but it's worth confirming you don't have such a
drive because the current partition scheme you've posted would be
sub-optimal if it does have 4096

Vista performance (uggh)
Issue: Vista reads slowly from a samba server. This appears to pop up
periodically here and elsewhere.
My samba.conf file has:
[homes]
...
vfs objects = readahead
As suggested elsewhere.
Writes are approximately 17-18MB/s which is acceptable. Reads are in
the 8MB/s range which is appalingly slow. Using linux smbclient and
windows XP clients I can read at 25+MB/s. I've enabled vfs

HI R lovers,
I have been facing a petty trouble with datas' import :
I have a plain txt file (see attached file or the copy below) that I cannot

CentOS newbie just saying hello
Hi folks,
Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer
Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB
unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if
I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I
think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked
this out completely.

Chrooting SFTP over SSH2
Hi,
As per the subject line - if I look up setting up chroot jails for SFTP over
SSH2 I'm led to various Web sites and patches and also to a CentOS wiki page
dated 2005, but what's the 'best' or 'correct' way to set this up for Centos
4.5 and 5?
Thanks

Error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) when doing local rsync.
Hi,
I cannot seem to find a good answer for what I am doing wrong; I am
simply trying to rsync a directory from one large disk partition to
another disk, both ext2, on the same physical system by using the command:
rsync --archive -v /etc /mnt/hdf/
I systematically get the following errors:
# rsync --archive -v /etc /mnt/hdf/
building file list ... done
etc/
etc/mtab

Tbench benchmark numbers seem to be limiting samba performance in the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel.
Hi,
I'm getting horrible performance on my samba server, and I am
unsure of the cause after reading, benchmarking, and tuning.
My server is a K6-500 with 43MB of RAM, standard x86 hardware. The
OS is Slackware 10.0 w/ 2.6.7 kernel I've had similar problems with the 2.4.26
kernel. I use samba version 3.0.5. I've listed my partitions below, as well
as the drive models. I have a

Ext3 fatal errors with Promise RAID
Today our server had seriuos problems, we had to reinitiate it and run fsck

Dou you think it's an ext3, kernel (vanilla 2.4.19) or hardware bug?

Problem with internal traffic
Have 4 harddrives hde,hdg etc all of these drives are mounted in samba. When i copy file from one drive to another i notice that server sends the file to my computer and then back to itself (into the right place). The file will be copied but doing so it will eat half of my network bandwith.
Is it possible to aviod this?
Best Regards

Samba print queues showing old jobs
We have a server running Centos-3 with all latest updates. The server
hosts 3 printers for us which are accessed by various Windows clients.
About 3 months ago we noticed that, after a cups update, if you looked
at the print queues in Windows they would show old jobs that had long
been printed. After a further cups update this quirk went away but it's
just come backs again - possibly after

All data "gone," lost+found is left.
So you know, I don't know too much about file systems.
Here is what I did: I have two linux boxes. the first box had many
hardrives in it, but needed to be used in other ways. So I took 4
harddrives out of it and placed it in the other Linux box. I thought it
would be able to read these right away. (maybe this was my mistake?) I
could mount all of the drives in there. three of my

Re: Problems with ext3 fs
Hi,
I have read this thread and want to say that I have expirienced the same
problem.
Once, when I was loged in, one of my filesystems ( root filesystem :( )
became read-only with the same symptoms.
But results was more tragic. Almost in each directory avg. 10% of files
had incorrect attributes, owner, links, etc.
But filenames was correct. So, I was obliged to re-create root
filesystem :(

acard 865 corruption issues
Hi Andre, ext3 folk,
It would be really great if you could help me out here, I'm not sure if
this is a hardware issue, a driver issue, an ext3 issue or some
combination of them...
I have a KT133A motherboard with an on-board promise controller, and an
ACARD ATP865 in a PCI slot. I'm running 2.4.19-ac4 with the lvm 1.0.5
patches.
The acard has two drives, hde and hdg attached to it, both
