Lazy loading... advices
Hello,
I am looking for more information about lazy loading introduced in R 2.0.0.
Doing
?lazyLoad
I got some and there is a 'see also' section that points to
'makeLazyLoading'... But I cannot reach this page.
My problem is: I recompiled a library that uses a lot of functions from
other libraries (of course I can give details if needed). I load it in my
computer: library(svGUI),

barplot() does not draw bars correctly in R 1.9.0 (PR#6776)
Bars are not stacked, but superimposed. This happens even with the first
example of barplot:
tN <- table(Ni <- rpois(100, lambda=5))
r <- barplot(tN, col='gray')

Cross-platforms solution to export R graphs
Hello Rusers,
I have worked on a R Wiki page for solutions in exporting R graphs,
especially, the often-asked questions:
- How can I export R graphs in vectorized format (EMF) for inclusion in
MS Word or OpenOffice outside of Windows?
- What is the best solution(s) for post-editing/annotating R graphs.
The page is at:
http://wiki.r-project.org/rwiki/doku.php?id=tips:graphics-misc:export.

R benchmarking program
Hi All,
I've just rebuild the latest R with the Goto BLAS on our new Intel quad core machines. I did a few basic matrix calculations, and I was very impressed by the performance I saw. I wonder if anyone has a more rigorous benchmarking program for R. I downloaded a old R test/benchmarking program (see below), and this didn't work with the current R, and so I wondered if anyone could

[Fwd: Re: Video demo of using svSocket with data.table]
Forwarded to R-Help, because I think it could interest people following
this thread. Clearly, RServe and svSocket have different goals and very
little overlap.
Best,
Philippe

Using tcltk to display jpeg images
Dear R Helpers,
Does anyone know how to use tcltk to display jpeg images? The manual says
that
one must use Tk_PhotoCreateImageFormat to register the jpeg image handler.
The
"ActiveTcl User Guide"
says:-
"The package img::jpeg is a sub-package of Img. It can be loaded as a part

nls, nlrq, and box-cox transformation
Dear r-help members
I posted this message already yesterday, but don't know whether it
reached you since I joined the group only yesterday.
I would like to estimate the boxcox transformed model
(y^t - 1)/t ~ b0 + b1 * x.
Unfortunately, R returns with an error message when I try to
perform this with the call
nls( I((y^t - 1)/t) ~ I(b0 + b1*x),
start = c(t=1,b0=0,b1=0), data = mydataframe)

R Wiki: how useful for developers?
Hello all R developers,
I just send the official annoucement of the R Wiki at
http://wiki.r-project.org (was also officially annouced at useR!2006). I
would like to insist here on the aspects of the Wiki that could be of
particular interest for you, as R developer:
1) The 'R documentation' section is dedicated to hold the latest
"wikified" version of all Rd files (base,

lowess + turnpoints = doubling integers?
Happy New Year, r-helpers!
I am using lowess to smooth a scatter plot,
xx<-lowess(xinput,f=.04) #defaults for other args
followed by
turnpoints(xx$y) #defaults for other args
I plot the smoothed result as well as turnpoints (using yy$tppos) on top of raw
data plot.
Result is exactly as expected, graphically.
For another purpose, I calcuate the difference between turnpoints (representing

Hook for running a function before evaluation
Hello,
I like much addTaskCallback() and friends. However, there are situations
were we would like to have a function run BEFORE, not after every
top-level tasks. I think specifically to reset options(width = ) to
accommodate to the current width of the console, using something like:
options(width = system("tput cols"))
I am sure there are many other situations where this could be

Handling of upper/lowercase in package names (PR#2816)
Hi,
This is (presumably?) a bug in R 1.7.0 under Windows. I have not tested it
on other systems. Attachment of packages is case sensitive but not
library(), resulting in multiple loadings of the same package if the library
name is spelled differently. The following example loads the `tools'
package, once as `tools' and once as `Tools'. This behavior is the same with
all packages and

R GUI considerations (was: R, Wine, and multi-threadedness)
Hello,
Following a discussion initiated on r-devel, that mentions SciViews-R
and other GUIs issues for R, I would like to make comments (and would be
happy if these comments would initiate interesting initiatives).
A big, big problem with SciViews-R is that a part of it is written in
Visual Basic 6, a M$$$$ language, not supported any more, buggy, non
transposable to other platforms, etc,

I do not understand what happens here (under Win XP):
a <- abs(matrix(rnorm(800*800)/2, ncol=800, nrow=800))
system.time(b <- a^1000)[3]

Similarly,

system.time(b <- (phi^a - (-phi)^(-a))/sqrt(5))[3]

I do not understand the following behaviour. Could someone explain me what

Why do I get an error message using list[["item"]], and not using list$item?

Detecting incomplete commands
Hello,
I need a similar behaviour as with the prompt: asking to complete incomplete
R command with eval(parse(text = ....))
Is it a way to make the difference between an illegal and an incomplete R
command in a string?
For instance:

expression(ls())

Power (^) 10x slower in R since version 1.7.1... What next?
OK, I have made a little search about this "problem" that apparently occurs
only on Windows platform... (but I am sure most of you are already aware of
it): the slow down is due to the adoption of a different algorithm for pow
in mingw 3.x. This is motivated by some other changes in mingw. Here is a
quote of Danny Smith that did this change:
>When mingw changed default FPU settings
