BFGS versus L-BFGS-B
Hi all, I'm trying to figure out the effective differences between BFGS and L-BFGS-B are, besides the obvious that L-BFGS-B should be using a lot less memory, and the user can provide box constraints. 1) Why would you ever want to use BFGS, if L-BFGS-B does the same thing but use less memory? 2) If i'm optimizing with respect to a variable x that must be non-negative, a common approach

ggplot2 errorbarh
Hi, I'm having problems using the 'width' aesthetic attribute for the geom_errorbarh. This is the same problem reported earlier here, but I'll try to write the problem more clearly: http://www.mail-archive.com/r-help@r-project.org/msg62371.html The problem I'm having is that, the 'width' attribute is supposed to set the height of the endpoints of the whiskers, and

glmnet - choosing the number of features
Hi, I am trying to use the glmnet package to do some simple feature selection. However, I would ideally like to be able to specify the number of features to return (the glmnet package, as far as I can tell, only allows specification of a regularization parameter, lambda, that in turn returns a model with a specific number of non-zero features). Is there a straightforward way of calculating the

reading a dense file of binary number
hi all, i have a file of the following format that i want to read into a matrix: 010101001110101 101010010111110 010010100100000 ... it has no headers or row names. I tried to use read.table(), but it doesn't allow me to specify nothing as the column separator (specifying sep='' means whitespace for that function). read.fwf doesn't seem appropriate either. Can I use Production mode but with Dev type characteristics?
Hi, I have a local development environment and remote production environment, however I am really just learning/playing, hence I would like to be able to define these environments separately in the config files, however.... I would like my production environment to really act in a development mode fashion at the moment (i.e. sense updates I make without any need to restart things etc). Is

Local channel characteristics
I'm reading about Local channel and applications. One fancy idea came up: if my generic dial plan uses Dial() with no timeout, can I assign it a timeout for special purposes by Dial(Local/some-exten@mycontext,,20) or even add other Dial() options. Well, I can't. (Maybe a feature request?) So this pseudo channel seems to lack some characteristics of a "real" one. Now the

multiple ports, different characteristics
The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/Iptables> leads me to believe that the only way to configure dovecot to listen for the same protocol on multiple ports is via external redirection (iptables or similar). Is that so, or can dovecot be directly configured to listen on multiple ports? Here's a concrete example of what I'm trying to accomplish. Our environment uses plaintext

rsync, excluding files w/certain characteristics
hey, I was wondering - is there an option to rsync which allows you to exclude transfers of files with a certain size or other characteristics? I want to setup a 'partial' rsync mirror where I only pull files under 5M, for example.. I see the option for including/excluding file names in the usage, but not file sizes.. Ed

Distributional characteristics
Hi all I've a continuous variable and I want to test (graphically, plotting observed and theoretical distr, qqplot) whether it follows some formal distribution. (some thing close to Ricci document : Fitting distributions with R, Feb05). The distribution I want to fit is a truncated Gamma at 1 (the minimal value is 1), P(x)=Pgamma(rate,x)/(1-Pgamma(rate,x<1)) NB : changing the variable

Tabulating Baseline Characteristics on specific observations
I have a data set with many missing observations. When I run a regression, R of course discards the observations (the whole row) that have "NA". I want to tabulate some baseline characteristics (column means) but only for the observations that R used for the regression. I tried to recreate this data frame by using na.omit on the original data frame, but this will not work as this will

Function source: desired characteristics
Hi, We've been calling the function "source" (package base) from Tinn-R editor to send files, marked blocks and selections to R interpreter because it avoids a lot of problems related with input/output synchronization in the Rgui output. The new RGedit plugin is also using this function in this way. We (Jakson Aquino and I) are just finishing a new version of a plug in to Vim

what characteristics of model curve do parameters denote
Dear list, I'm trying to fit a chapman-richards equation to my data, only I cannot interpret the parameters a, b and d. I know that the parameter b denotes the asymptote, but for the others I couldn't figure out. But I do need to know this in order to set my starting values. Here's the model: modPoplar<- nls(Diameter ~ d*(1-exp(-b *Age))^a ,start=list(a=20,b=0.9,d=33)) I attached

How can I change characteristics of a cca biplot in R
Hi, I?m doing cca for a community data set in R and I have made a biplot for my data. Otherwise everything seems to be allright but the biplot is so messy I can?t read it well enough or publish it. I would like to get the row numbers out of the plot: I want the species position and the environmental variables in it as vectors but not the station numbers. How do I get them out? I have a raw

Dynamically switching lattice device characteristics in Sweave under Makefile control
I am indebted to Deepayan Sarkar for lattice graphics, Fritz Leisch for Sweave and the authors of the beamer package for LaTeX. For me these are a "killer app" combination. I wouldn't want to go back to creating presentations in any other way. When I create a presentation I use a Makefile that allows me to the presentation version of the slides, a 4-up version for printing on

extracting characteristics of datasets from data()
I can use data() to find the available datasets in a package, but I'd like to extract and display some additional information for each dataset than what is provided by data(), e.g., class() and dim() for datasets for which these are available. I'm stuck on using using lapply properly with objects, rather than the names of objects that I get from data() Example: > DS <-

determine the latency characteristics of a VM automatically
Hi George, Tow months ago, we talked about how to reduce the scheduling latency for a specific VM which runs a mixed workload, where the boost mechanism can not works well. I have tried some methods to reduce the scheduling latency for some assumed latency-sensitive VMs and got some progress on it. Now I hope to make it on demand. That is to say, I hope to get the scheduler to determine the

ggplot2: edge outlines on points
The graphic design elements in ggplot2 are so well done for color graphics. Thank you! For BW publication graphs, there are a few options I would like to be able to tweak, but can't seem to find the grob handles necessary OR the right plotting strategy. Here's one problem I've been puzzling over: Q> How do you plot points with a grey fill and a black outline around the

[OT] What file can I use to change Ubuntu 9.10 display characteristics?
This question is vaguely related to R in that I have managed to wedge the netbook computer that I use for demonstrations of R and I would like to know how to un-wedge it so I can continue to give lectures about R. I have an ASUS eee PC running the netbook-remix version of Ubuntu 9.10. The X server in 9.10 is a little different from earlier versions in that it does not require an explicit

Performance & capacity characteristics of R?
I hope this is merely a FAQ, and not an AFAQ (annoyingly....). I'm a SAS programmer, with several years' experience of the system, evaluating alternatives. See the SAS for Linux website (URL in sig) for more info. I'm exploring R's capabilities and limitations. I'd be very interested in having a deeper understanding of it capacity and performance limitations in dealing with

grey colored lines and overwriting labels i qqplot2
I created this graph in ggplot and added ablines to the different facets by specifying with subset commands. As you might see, there are still a few issues. 1.) I would like to have the diamonds in a grey scale instead of colors. I accomplished this (see graph 2) until I overwrote the label title for the treatments and the colors came back (graph 1). I used these two commands: p=ggplot(data =
