Installing Ferret locally on TextDrive
I would like to give the 0.9.0 version of Ferret a try on my application hosted on TextDrive. I am currently running on the 0.3.2 version there. Does anyone have any tips on installing it locally there? I know just enough about Ruby gems to get by... but I am thinking it could be as easy as passing a -i flag to specify the install location for ferret. Then, the only thing I am not sure about

Ferret/AAF Stability?
Hello. I''m the author of DataMapper (http://datamapper.org), and am trying to choose what Full-Text-Indexing engine/plugin I want to include by default. I was hoping you guys could help. :-) Sphinx comes highly recommended, but without live index updates, it just doesn''t seem practical for most of my work. I''m most experienced with Solr, but the whole HTTP::Request and

find_by_contents not returning SearchResults?
The acts_as_ferret documentation says find_by_content returns an instance of SearchResults, but I see this error when I try to use the results. undefined method `total_hits'' for []:Array Here is the link to the documentation: http://projects.jkraemer.net/acts_as_ferret/rdoc/classes/FerretMixin/Acts/ARFerret/ClassMethods.html#M000010 But here is the actual code: result =

Help with Multiple Readers, 1 Writer scenario
Hi, I''m building a web server application using Ferret [thanks so much Dave], Mongrel and Camping which works fine servicing one request at a time, but serialises searches if more than one request arrives, so I''d like some advice please about the best way to use multiple readers and one writer. Some background ... query requests which in my case are always read only, arrive via

Help with Multiple Readers, 1 Writer scenario
Some time back in September, [sorry to be so slow], Dave wrote: > When you open an IndexReader on the index it is opened up on > that particular version (or state) of the index. nfs shared and ferret segfault
Hi, I use ferret 0.10.4 whith shared index over NFS directory. There are 2 applications servers. The web server is Mongrel 0.3.13.3 and mongrel_cluster 0.2.0. There are 20 Mongrel processes on each server. Each time my application update a model, Mongrel process stops running with this errro in its log: /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.10.4/lib/ferret/index.rb:663: [BUG] Segmentation fault

setGeneric for residuals, etc
I'm experimenting with a few model-fitting classes of my own. I'm leaning towards using S4 for my classes, but the R functions I'd want to override (residuals, predict, etc.) are all S3 methods. As I understand it, I could do setGeneric("residuals"), then add S4 specializations to it. However, I don't understand the full consequences of doing this. Are there any

Index::Index.new vs. Readers and Writers
Hey gang, A post on the Rails forum a while back had it sound like you pretty much had to use the Index Readers & Writers if you were going to be potentially accessing an index from more than one process. (i.e. multiple dispatch.fcgi''s, etc) Is this still the case, or does the main Index class do that black magic behind the scenes? =) I was having trouble implementing the

Updating Index Is Very Slow
Hi, I am experiencing very poor performance when updating my index. For example, to update the index for 10 documents, it is taking 3 to 4 seconds. My index is currently very small... with probably less than 100 docs in it. I have created my index as follows: GIFT_INDEX = Index::Index.new(:path => "#{index_dir}/gift", :key => ''id'', :auto_flush => true)

Mongrel Cluster Compatibility
Is anyone using ferret with Mongrel/Mongrel-cluster? The first one or two times I access the ferret index it works fine, but then it throws a write lock error StandardError (: Error occured at <index_rw.c>:703 Error: exception 6 not handled: Could not obtain write lock when trying to write index ): I need to do more testing on this to narrow down the problem/solution but just wanted to

pagination in acts_as_ferret
I''m just wondering where I would put the pagination for search results when using "acts_as_ferret". At the moment my search code is.. def search @query = params[:query] || '''' unless @query.blank? @results = Tutorial.find_by_contents @query end end Cheers SchmakO -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

A couple of ferret 0.9.4 exceptions
Hi Dave, I am using ferret at my site http://gifthat.com and I just had a few exceptions pop up. I don''t have a way to reproduce them, but my site just was listed on lifehacker.com and these issues have popped up under multiple concurrent users (only twice though which I think isn''t too bad). I am using two lighttpd instances both with read/write access to the index: 1) Error

Using ID as Key
Hi, I followed the howto to use keys for documents: http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/wiki/HowTos#Howtousekeysfordocument If I add two documents with the same id, only one gets added to the index as expected. However, I have found the key and id do not match. So, attempting to access the index with the id does not work. For instance, when I run this search: INDEX.search_each(query) do

[PATCH] Btrfs: optimize fsync for the single writer case
This patch optimizes the tree logging stuff so it doesn''t always wait 1 jiffie for new people to join the logging transaction if there is only ever 1 writer. This helps a little bit with latency where we have something like RPM where it will fdatasync every file it writes, and so waiting the 1 jiffie for every fdatasync really starts to add up. Linking to the paginated items from search results.
Using Ferret for searching, I''ve got results that I need to link to. Which is fine, except for that they''re displayed on paginated pages using Rails paginate function - so it''s not like I can''t get it from the database or anything else. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about this? It''s not so much a coding problem as a theory problem, and I

Question on "single writer, multiple reader"
Hi, dear Xapianers! I've been using Xapian in my project recently. The feature "single writer, multiple reader" is one of my favorite, but currently I can't make it work. My goal is to add more documents to the database increamentally, while the Xapian search process is not stopped. I followed "quickstartindex.cc" and "quickstartsearch.cc" on

Rebuild Indexes Issue
Hi, I have some code to rebuild my ferret indexes but occasionally some stale documents remain in the index even after rebuilding. The only way I could find around this is to manually delete the index files from the filesystem. Here is the code I have for rebuilding one of my indexes for Gifts: # delete existing entries INDEX.size.times {|i| INDEX.delete(i)} gifts =

IO Error when querying on a single field
I''m getting an exception when I query a large index (4GB, ~700K docs) on a particular field.
