R crashes using pdf() windows() or postscript()
Dear HelpeRs,
I have a script where I save several thousands of graphics. These are
then used in Latex through Sweave. Unfortunately R crashes while making
these plots and Windows pops up some message that I run low on virtual
memory. I tried to save the plots using pdf(), windows() and
postscript() and also tried to run it with R CMD BATCH myscript.R. But
after a while R slows down and crashes

grid.legend - lines
I am testing out the grid-plots, but get into a problem making a legend. I
have a line plot and some points, following the model in
grid.plot.and.legend() i manage to get the points correctly in the legend,
but what do I do with the line? (Of cource, I can just draw a line at the
right location on the plot, but I would prefer to use legend)

colorbar legend for image()
Hi,
are there any plans to add a colorbar legend to image()?
Or such a possibility already implemented which I just haven't
discovered yet. Anyway, I will be willing to spent some time on the
implementation if there isn't anyone working on that already.
Thanks
Thomas

Help boxplot to add mean, standard error and/or stadard deviation
Dear researchers
I wish to plot a box plot without the mean line (the black line) and plot
only the mean (red square). Futhermore, is it possible to add standard
error and/or stadard deviation?
This is an example
mytest <- c(2.1,2.6,2.7,3.2,4.1,4.3,5.2,5.1,4.8,1.8,1.4,2.5,2.7,3.1,2.6,2.8)
boxplot(mytest,lty = "solid")
means <- mean(mytest,na.rm=TRUE)
points(means, pch = 22, col

Help understanding EVERYTHING
Team,
I am trying to learn a GUI for Ruby and I picked wxRuby.
The problem is that I am kind of slow learning this and I now feel
frustrated after trying for about at least 7 hours.
I am trying to design a simple Sudoku 9x9 grid to display numbers, 1 - 9,
using buttons.
I posted a question on Ruby forum ruby-talk and a gentleman, Alex Fenton,
answered my questions.
Alex gave me what appear to be

line jump in plot legend title
Hello,
In order to reduce the width of my legend in a plot I introduced line jumps in the title. Here's the problem; the legend box hasn't adapted accordingly and part of the title is printed out of the frame.
See the example below:
plot(1:10)
legend("bottomright", bg="white", fill=c(7,8,12,13,19),

w0 in legend
In Version 1.1.0 Under development (unstable) (June 8, 2000)
there seems to be a problem with an internal variable w0 in legend that
generates the following new error:
Error in legend((par()$usr)[1:2], (par()$usr)[3:4], Legend, lty = lty, :

wavelet parameters with sowas
Hello everybody.
My name is Angela.
I'm doing wavelet using the sowas library. The problem I have is that I
don't know how to choose the paremeters to describes differnt wavelet
analysis. How I select the noctave, nvoice, w0, s0,...?
I hope my question is clear enough.
Thank you very much beforehand.

Yes, par(family="mono") would work, except that I get R segfaults from this

strwidth and strheight for rotated text
Dear All,
I would like to plot text with a box around it. I used strwidth and
strheight to compute the size of the box which is plotted with rect:
z <- rnorm(10)
# horizontal text works
plot(rnorm(10))
x1 <- 5
y1 <- 0
label <- "Label"
cha <- paste(" ", label, " ", sep = "")
xh <- strwidth(cha, cex = par("cex"))

Text position in Traditional Graphics
R 2.4.1 on Windows XP.
Question: In traditional graphics, is it possible to find out
the height of a line of text in units that can be used in
arithmetic and then in calls to text()?
Context: I have written a function that draws a plot and then,
depending on whether some arguments are TRUE or FALSE, draws
various lines of text in the plot. The text lines may be turned
on or off individually

Overlay Histogram
Dear all,
For two sets of random variables, say, x <- rnorm(1000, 10, 10) and y
<- rnorm(1000. 3, 20).
Is there any way to overlay the histograms (and density curves) of x and y
on the plot of y vs. x?
The histogram of x is on the x axis and that of y is on the y axis.
The density curve here is to approximate the shape of the distribution
and does not have to have area 1.
Thank you

documentation error par("cin") and par("cra") (PR#7227)
Dear all,
the help of par() claims that
cin and cra are
c(width, height)
but it appears to be rather
c(height, width)
Best regards

linebreaks in mathplot
Dear HelpeRs,
I would like to do sg similar to:
plot(c(0,100), c(0,100), xaxs="i", yaxs="i", type="n")
txt <- paste("a =", a, "%\n b =", b, " km2", sep="")
text(95, 95, txt, adj=c(1,1))
just with the "km2" formatted with 2 in a superscript.
I thought
txt <- substitute("a = "*a*" %\n b

I have some data series in text file.

Text in Boxes?
It's probably a beginner's question:
How do I show text in boxes?
That is, can I specify a background color for text output with text() ?
The following doesn't work as I would expect:
text(labels="123", 50, 0.5, bg="green")
I've experimented with legend(),which will make the box too wide, and
also with rect(), which doesn't know the extent of the text

graphs for pretest data
Is there an easy way to make graphs for the following data. I have
pretest and posttest scores for men and
women. I would like to form a 'titlted segment' plot for the data.
That is, make segments joining the scores,
with different types of segments for men and women.
Example data:
menpre <- c(43,42,26,39,60,60,46)
menpost <- c(40,41,36,42,54,58,43)
womenpre <-
