testing for emptyenv
Dear R-users,
Is there a way to test whether a particular environment e is equal to emtyenv(), or for that sake whether two environments e1 and e2 are equal?
I tried a couple of ways to compare environments, but neither seem to work:
> e1 <- new.env()
> e2 <- new.env()
> e1 == e2
Error in e1 == e2 :

environment question
Hi R users!
I was looking at some of the example code for the "environment"
function. Here it is:
e1 <- new.env(parent = baseenv()) # this one has enclosure package:base.
e2 <- new.env(parent = e1)
assign("a", 3, envir=e1)
ls(e1)
ls(e2)
exists("a", envir=e2) # this succeeds by inheritance
exists("a", envir=e2, inherits = FALSE)

functional (?) programming in r
the following is a trivialized version of some functional code i tried
to use in r:
(funcs = lapply(1:5, function(i) function() i))
# a list of no-parameter functions, each with its own closure environment,
# each supposed to return the corresponding index when applied to no
arguments
sapply(funcs, function(func) func())
# supposed to return c(1,2,3,4,5)

formal argument "envir" matched by multiple actual arguments
Hi list,
This looks similar to the problem reported here
https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2006-April/037199.html
by Henrik Bengtsson a long time ago. It is very sporadic and
non-reproducible.
Henrik, do you remember if your code was using reg.finalizer()?
I tend to suspect it but I'm not sure.
I've been hunting this bug for months but today, and we the help of other

How to define new operators
Dear R community
I try to create a new operator to build a special sum of two CashFlows. (my
S4 Class)
I tried the following but this is actually not what I want.
setGeneric("++",function(e1,e2)standardGeneric("++"))
setMethod("+",signature=list("CashFlow","CashFlow"),function(e1,e2){
print("+")

Weired problem when passing arguments using ...?
Hello All,
I'm trying to pass the argument col.names to write.csv using '...'.
But I got the following warnings. Maybe it is very simple. But I'm not
sure what I am wrong. Could you please help point to me what the
problem is?

mapping one redundant index to another redundant index
Dear R users,
I have a simple problem I cannot solve, but I sure you can help.
I have two vector, let say
> tmp1 <- c("a", "a", "b", "c")
> tmp2 <- c("a", "a", "b", "c", "c", "d")
and I want to create a matrix of two column for which I have all the
combinations of the same character,

Sorting and subsetting
Suppose I have a data frame, such as the one below:
tmp <- data.frame(index = gl(2,20), foo = rnorm(40))
And further assume it is sorted by index and then by the variable foo.
tmp <- tmp[order(tmp$index, tmp$foo) , ]
Now, I want to grab the first N rows of tmp for each index. In the end, what I want is the data frame 'result'
tmp1 <- subset(tmp, index == 1)
tmp2 <-

should base R have a piping operator ?
Dear R-devel,
The most popular piping operator sits in the package `magrittr` and is used
by a huge amount of users, and imported /reexported by more and more
packages too.
Many workflows don't even make much sense without pipes nowadays, so the
examples in the doc will use pipes, as do the README, vignettes etc. I
believe base R could have a piping operator so packages can use a pipe in

An iterative function
Dear all,
The function f() below is a function of m1 and m2, both of which are
matrices with 3 rows. The function works sequentially one row after
another.
So altogether there are three stages. I am trying to update the coding to
write a generic function that will work for arbitrary k stages.
I am hoping to get some suggestion and help. Thanks so much!

tapply, data.frame problem
Hi R-users,
I'm quite new to R and trying to learn the basics. I have a following
problem concerning the convertion of array object into data frame. I have
made following data sets
tmp1 <- rnorm(100)
tmp2 <- gl(10,2,length=100)
tmp3 <- as.data.frame(cbind(tmp1,tmp2))
tmp3.sum <- tapply(tmp3$tmp1,tmp3$tmp2,sum)
tmp3.sum <- as.data.frame(tapply(tmp1,tmp2,sum))

[LLVMdev] Proposal to disable some of DAG combine optimizations
Some of the optimizations that the first DAG combine performs is counter
productive for our 8-bit target. For example in:
// I dropped the types because they are irrelevant.
// Excuse me for changing the syntax...
store %tmp1, %var
%tmp2 = load %var
%tmp4 = add %tmp3, %tmp2
Since load is the only user of var and since var has just be stored to,
it assumes that %tmp1 is alive and it goes ahead

bug with mapply() on an S4 object

Starting with ordinary vectors, so we know what to expect:

why do I get an output in the first iteration of the for-loop

and how can I avoid that?
