plain text in Chinese can not be set
Hi there,
According to ?par, 'font' is an integer which specifies which font to
use for text, that 1 corresponds to plain text (the default), 2 to bold
face, 3 to italic and 4 to bold italic.
When I test Chinese character in pdf(), I found that 1 to bold face, 2
to italic, 3 to bold italic, 4 to symbol. and I don't find how to set
plain text. In the following code, the font to use

Sweave, cairo_pdf, CJK, ghostscript
I have had some fun in the last few days trying to put together an annotated map of China with R and some public GIS data:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/outmodedbonsai/files/snpMatrix%20next/1.17.7.11/China_Choropleth_Maps.pdf/download
It is done, and rather nice... there are a few issues:
- the default pdf() device cannot do CJK with embedded fonts - and cairo_pdf() is not hooked up to

similarity between two gene lists with varied length
Dear listers,
a little off-topic:
I am looking for and compare algorithms which can calculate "distance" or
"similarity" between two gene lists with different lengths.
Any paper, any implementation in R and any suggestion is welcome!
Thanks,

Help on hypothesis testing
Hi,
I hope to use R to perform some hypothesis testing, such as t.test() and var.test().
However, I don't find a function that could do test on means with variance known
(i.e., u test or z test in some textbook), and a function that could do test on
variances of normal distribution (i.e. chi-squared test).
Thanks in advance for any hints.
Best wishes,

automatic font selection, please help
Hi there,
With the helps from this list, I can set specific CJK fonts for

stepwise regression
Dear all,
I have encountered a problem when perform stepwise regression.
The dataset have more 9 independent variables, but 7 observation.
In R, before performing stepwise, a lm object should be given.
fm <- lm(y ~ X1 + X2 + X3 + X11 + X22 + X33 + X12 + X13 + X23)
However, summary(fm) will give:
Residual standard error: NaN on 0 degrees of freedom
Multiple R-Squared: 1, Adjusted

Help use try function with boot
Hi R users,
Is is possible for me to use the try function with boot? I would to do
the bootstraping with a nonlinear model(it works well when R < 1000).
But it does not work very well (when R is large) thus I try to use
"try" to resolve. I put the try function in two cases:
case1: put the try in front of the boot

The dose should be transformed with log10().
I use glm(y ~ log10(dose), family=binomial(link=probit)) to
do probit analysis, however, I have to exclude the

How to remove the outer rectangle in 3D plot/surface.
Hello,
I plot a 3D plot/surface using cloud function in lattice package.
Several days ago, I post a question about
how to remove the framebox out the 3D plot/surface.
However, I think I don't make me understood clearly.
I just hope to romove the outer rectangle or box around the box.
Thanks again.

set different font family for strings in mtext or text?
Hi there,
Is it possible to set different font family for strings in mtext or text?
For example, on windows platform with windows() device:
plot(1:10, type = "n")
text(5,5, "Chinese (English)") #Chinese for Chinese characters
it will give the correct Chinese and English characters with two
different font family, i.e., English character in default sans family,
and Chinese

graphic device MetaPost
Hi all,
By default, MetaPost passes all text through TeX. This has the
advantage of allowing essentially any TeX symbols in titles and labels.
It give us, who use the multibyte character in ordinary communication,
much convenience. Gnuplot has fulfilled this function, and it give me a
deep impression for I could use Chinese character in plots with a minor
modification to the MetaPost file.

lattice: double y - problem changing axis color after doubleYScale
Hi,
I have had some troubles using doubleYScale. No matter what I try, I cant manage to change the color of the y-axis in the end. I have to produce a black and white plot. There is also something I do not understand regarding fontfamilyj="serif" when using it in:
strip=strip.custom()
Maybe someone has a better idea for defining which line and dots belong to which y-axis when not using

Placing eps files from R into Adobe InDesign documents: specifying fontfamily
This is a solution I am posting for a problem that others may have.
If you want to:
1. Place lattice graphics from R into an Adobe InDesign document, and
2. Use the export as eps function in R to maximize resolution (it is much
better than exporting as a metafile or bitmap), and
3. Use long strings of text in your titles or captions or to label your
axes.
Then you will have problems because:

[Bug report] Chinese characters are not handled correctly in Rterm for Windows
Hi Tomas,
Sorry for the delayed response. I have tested the problem on the latest R-devel build (2018-04-27 r74651), and it still exists. RGui is always fine with Chinese characters, but some IDEs rely on the CLI version of R (e.g. Visual Studio Code with R plugin).
>Your example print("ABC\u4f60\u597dDEF") is printing two Chinese characters, right?
Yes. U+4F60, U+597D or C4E3,
