best way to plot a evolution in time
Hi everyone,
I have the following question:
given three objects let's say:
a <- c( 2 , 5, 15, 16)
b <- c(1 ,1, 8 , 8)
c <- c (10, 10 11 ,11)
m<-matrix(c(a,b,c),byrow=T,nrow=3)
rownames(m)<-c("gene a", 'gene b','gene c')

gene.dist<-dist(m,method='euclidian')

a loop for boxplot graphs
Dear Colleagues
I have the following code that generates a boxplot for one specific labtest:
boxplot.n(LBSTRESN~COHORT, main="Boxplot of laboratory data for XLXXX-XXX test=Creatinine",
subset = LBTEST=="Creatinine",
xlab = "Cohort Number",
ylab = "Units = umol/L",
varwidth=TRUE
I would like to know if there is a way to loop through the dataset and

Text on a boxplot graph
Hi all,
Could anybody help me figure out how to write text on a boxplot. I have to
plot 9 boxplots side by side on a single graph. On the x-axis I write numeric
values with the 'names' argument but I'd like to add one label (character
value) in the middle of each box. I know how to use the text() function for
regular y~x plots but in this particular case, I'm kinda lost...

Lattice/"panel.bwplot" and Gviz: Boxplot question
Hi,
I was using Gviz package to create a boxplot. I understand that Gviz uses
"panel.bwplot" to create the boxplot.
Is there any way that I can remove the dashed line surrounding each pair of
boxplots?
Here is some sample code:
#############
library(Gviz)
thisdata <- matrix(sample(1:100,60),nrow=10,ncol=6)
positions <- sample(1:100,6)
limit1 <- min(positions)-1

Newbie question on subsets
Hi...
I'm working through the book, A Handbook of Statistical Analyses
using R by Everitt, and I'm trying to do the following (p. 19 of his
book):
boxplot(log(marketvalue)~country,
data = subset(Forbes2000,
country %in% c("United
Kingdom","Germany","India","Turkey")),
ylab="log(marketvalue",

R-alpha: boxplot(..., varwidth = TRUE, ...) in 0.50a4
To use Ron Ziegler's famous phrase, that argument is "no longer
operative". The code for the bxp function, which is what is called to
actually do the plotting, has a section
if (!is.null(width)) {
if (length(width) != n | any(is.na(width)) |
any(width <= 0))
stop("invalid boxplot widths")
width <- 0.8 * width/max(width)
}

controlling the x axis of boxplots
v 2.0.1 (sooooh old!) on Win2k
I think I know the answer to this but I can hope ...
I have data for continuous variables (measures of residents) by a
categorical variable in range (1,22), the units in which they live.
I want to plot these data with a pair of boxplots one above another
with same x-axis (1,22) using par(mfrow=c(2,1)) and then plotting
first for the women then for the men.

Quasi-bug in boxplot().
There seems to be a problem with partial matching of argument names
in boxplot(), in respect of the "horizontal" argument. I don't
recall seeing this issue discussed previously. My apologies if I am
being redundant. (A scan of CRAN revealed that someone had
experienced problems with the "horizontal" argument, but he was
spelling it out in full, so that was a different

I want to do some boxplots, but the median sould appear in another
line-thickness and another color.
I do not know, what to do in order to realise my wishes.
Sorry for that question, but I am new to R.

Changing color of points in violin plot
Hello,
I am trying to graph a violin plot like the example in
panel.violin(lattice) with the singer data - see below
Does anyone know how to change the color of the boxplot on the graph
from blue to green? I tried a number of changes, but to no avail.
Thanks for your help,

change margins or regions?!
Dear guRus,
after solving serveral other probs with boxplots, my ylabs do not appear
correct.
They area cut off.
I guess I have to change the letf and right margins, but I do not know
how.
Here is an example:

boxplot question
I'm graphing a series of boxplots of grouped data inside a function that
passes the data.frame, the names vector, and a title vector.
Because both the data subset changes with each successive pass through the
function, occasionally the names vector turns up with only one group to
plot. This is an expected result. However, when the names argument in
boxplot has only a single name, it

Dear Yusuke
These changes look interesting.
Have you considered being able to specify a different shading or crosshatching
for each box. I can't see how you can do this at present. You can get
different colours but of course this is no good for black

displaying sample size in boxplots
Hi,
I was wondering if there is a ready made function or parameter
for indicating the sample size in boxplots?
Here's what I came up with so far:
library(ISwR)
data(energy)
attach(energy)
boxplot(expend~stature)
sample.size <- tapply(expend, stature, length)
sample.size <- paste("N=", sample.size, sep="")
mtext(sample.size, at=1:length(unique(stature)), line=2,
