2. The number of subscribers to some of the listservs
3. How popular each package is among Google searches across the years
4. Survey results from a Rexer Analytics poll
5. Survey results from a KDnuggests poll
6. A rudimentary analysis

Popularity of R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, Statistica, S-PLUS updated
Greetings,
I've just put out the latest version of "The Popularity of Data Analysis Software" at http://r4stats.com/popularity. This update includes complete data for 2010, the addition of number of blogs for each software, more coverage of Statistica, and, where possible, measures regarding the implementations of the SAS Language: Carolina and the World Programming System (WPS).

Updated comparison table for SAS-SPSS Add-ons and R Functions
Hi All,
I have substantially expanded the table that compares SAS and SPSS
add-on modules to somewhat equivalent R packages. This new version is
at:
http://r4stats.com/add-on-modules
and I would very much appreciate any feedback you might have on it.
The site http://r4stats.com is the replacement to
http://RforSASandSPSSusers.com and includes the support files for both

Bug (?) in read.fwf
Hi,
I'm trying to use read.fwf
temp = read.fwf ("Raw data.txt", widths = c (11, 21, 10, rep
(16, 6)) ,skip = 2, n = 2, stringsAsFactors = FALSE, strip.white = TRUE)
but no matter what I do the strings are turned into factors. I believe
it's the "n=2" parameter that causes the problem as it seems to work
without this. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance,

A zoo question / problem
Hi
I'm having a problem using the zoo library and I can't see what I'm
doing wrong. For example setting up the data
> t1 = zoo (matrix (1:12, nrow = 3), order.by = as.Date
(c("2008-08-01","2008-08-02","2008-08-03")))
> colnames (t1) = c ("A", "B", "C", "D")
> t2 = zoo (matrix (1:12, nrow = 3), order.by =

Which version control system to learn for managing Rprojects?
Gabor
As someone trying to the rest of my team using Subversion (which I have used for a while, but more as a backup / record of changes), have you a neat / automated way of building a package from a subversion repository?
Thanks

questions on some operators in R
Hi all,
I have two questions. Can some one give some help?
The first question is regarding the pair of operators "&" and "&&". What
is the
difference between the two?
The second question is regarding "<-" and "=". Usually we use
"<-" as the assignment operator. I saw some people use "=". Is there

SAS for R-users
There are loads of resources for users of any other
statistics package who are learning R. For example
http://www.google.com/search?q="r+for+sas-users"
The reverse isn't the case
http://www.google.com/search?q="sas+for+r-users"
Having heard rumors of how unelegant other statistics
packages are, I don't see why any R-user would
ever want to switch to anything else.

Programming examples added to r4stats.com
Hi All,
I now have programming examples for common research tasks done in R, SAS, SPSS and Stata at http://r4stats.com. The examples fall into the following categories:
Data Import & Export
Data Management
Enhancing Output
Graphics, ggplot2
Graphics, Traditional
Selecting Variables and Observations
Statistics
For the graphics examples, I got lazy and only show the R code done two ways.

troubles with a for loop
Dear all,
I am a stata user and I am moving my first steps in R.
I am dealing with a silly issue concerning looping over variables. I read
previous posts on similar topics in the R help archive, but I did not find a
solution.
Here is my case:
I run a simple bivariate linear regression saving the output in objects
called: pd.memb.0, pd.memb.1, pd.memb.2, pd.memb.3
pd.memb.0 <- lm(E.fs.memb ~

Rconsole - setting the size and location of Windows help files (Rgui)
Hi,
Using the Rconsole file I can specify the size and location of the Rgui
windows on NT.
e.g.
# Dimensions (in characters) of the console.
rows = 51
columns = 100
How can I specify the size of the help windows that popups
when I ask for help? e.g. '?help'
I would like the popup window to have say rows = 51 and columns = 100,
just like the main window but a different location on the

R vs. Stata
I have read some very good reviews comparing R (or Splus) to SAS. Does
anyone know if there are any reviews comparing R (or Splus) to Stata? I
am trying to get others to try R in my department, and I have never used
Stata.

Data Mining Survey
Dear R-Helpers,
SAS Institute just mailed out the notice below regarding a survey of
people who do data mining. To help keep the survey from becoming biased
toward commercial software, I thought it would be good to post it here
as well.
Cheers,

How many R packages?
Hi All,
I searched around to find the number of R packages currently available,
but didn't find anything, so I choose all repositories & told it to
install. The list contained about 2,856 (correcting roughly for those
installed). But the list includes repetitions such as 19 names that
begin with "bvbovine".
Selecting only CRAN and CRAN(extras) I get 1,344.
Is there an easier

The Quality & Accuracy of R
Hi All,
We have all had to face skeptical colleagues asking if software made by
volunteers could match the quality and accuracy of commercially written
software. Thanks to the prompting of a recent R-help thread, I read, "R:
Regulatory Compliance and Validation Issues, A Guidance Document for the
Use of R in Regulated Clinical Trial Environments

Multiple Conditional Tranformations
Greetings,
I'm learning R and I'm stuck on a basic concept: how to specify a
logical condition once and then perform multiple transformations under
that condition. The program below is simplified to demonstrate the goal.
Its results are exactly what I want, but I would like to check the
logical state of gender only once and create both (or any number of)
scores at once.

Aggregation using list with Hmisc summarize function
Hi All,
I'm using the Hmisc summarize function and used list instead of llist to
provide the by variables. It generated an error message. Is this a bug,
or do I misunderstand how Hmisc works with lists? The program below
demonstrates the error message.
Thanks,
Bob
x<-1:8
group <- c(1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2)
gender<- c(1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2)
