number of observations used in cor when use="pairwise.obs"
Dear R gurus, to compute the correlation matrix of "n" variables with "n_obs" observations each, possibly including NA, I use cor(M, use="pairwise.obs") where m is a "n" x "nobs" matrix. Now I want to know the number of observations actually used in this computation, namely for each pair of columns in M, say pair (i,j), I want to compute sum(

Swap: typical rehash. Why?
I can't resist. Read the thread that was pointed to on lkml. ROTFLMAO. *Real* UNIX addressed these problems long ago. I guess the "Gurus" suffer from NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome. Given a "general purpose" system, tunability is a must. UNIX, as delivered by USL in such examples as Sys V, had tunables that let admins tune to their needs. A single "swappiness"

win ME/Samba connection
Ok, believe it or not, I've looked through all 209 pages of the Samba-HOWTO_Collection.pdf plus used this mail list and other internet sources, used those recommendations, tried almost every possible iteration on the samba.conf file, looked at logs until nauseated and have concluded that there is no way that Windows ME can connect to a Linux box using Samba. Connecting to the WinME box from

I don't know if the following is possible but here it is: I have R and a bunch of libraries set up very nicely. I would like to hand off this setup to someone else. Should I just copy

How to organize/develop an R function
Hi Maybe this is not an issue about R. It's probably a programming issue and I am not a developer at all. Anyway my main developing activities are in R and that's where I have difficulties. When I develop a function or group of functions I lose eternities with the objects attributes and classes. I do a lot of object manipulation (lists to arrays, factors to numeric vectors, etc, etc) so

Add col in data.frame
Hello Gurus, I am still new to R. Here is my issue. I was trying to add column to data frame that was populated by read.spss(). When I used cbind to add a new variable(column). library(foreign) mydf<-read.spss(file="C:/myspss.sav",use.value.labels=FALSE, to.data.frame=TRUE,use.missings=FALSE) attr(mydf,"variable.labels") ## it gives you all the labels

New to Wine, Install Problem
Wine Enthusiasts, I'm new to Wine and am having a problem installing some software. I didn't see the application in question in the Application Database. I'm hoping the problem is something simple and that perhaps a Wine guru on the list can point me in the right direction. I don't have Windoze installed on any of my boxes. Unfortunately I now find myself needing to run a

IPSec tunnel mode, through a IPIP tunnel
Hello Gurus, I am a small problem with routing and here are the details. Interfaces on my server: * ipsec0 - 172.19.58.94 * tunl0 - 172.19.58.94 * eth0 - 172.19.58.94 Now, the problem is that there is another host 172.19.58.200. All communication to 172.19.58.200 should be through tunl0, and all the data should be secured using IPSec (tunnel mode - because there are more machines on my

Dear R Gurus: What is the name of the person who has all of the Tcl/tk stuff, please? I know it's James W, but can't remember his last name. I wanted to look at some of his examples. setting up samba3 on rh9 using win bind
I have been attempting to set up RH9 as a file server using Windows authentication. I have winbind running and both the wbinfo, and getent passwd commands return users and groups from the windows domain. Samba is set up, using the gui but when I try and add users, the domain users do not appear in the list. I am sure the gurus will tell me not to use the gui's but I am really new at this

A couple of questions for the Mitel gurus (phone-related - not systems)
Hi Folks, Just in case there are any Mitel gurus here: 1) Is it possible to convince a non-dual mode 5220 phone to 'upgrade' to the SIP firmware? I have inherited one that's Minet only. 2) I have a 5310 conference unit and 5235 phone in SIP mode, but someone's lost the connecting lead. Can anyone recommend anywhere in the UK for a replacement lead or confirm the pin-out so I can

Running Median and Mean
R gurus, On Aug 20, 2002, I asked in R-help about calculating a running 5-day median on a large matrix. Thanks to Martin Maechler <maechler@stat.math.ethz.ch> and Ray Brownrigg <Ray.Brownrigg@mcs.vuw.ac.nz> for responding. I ended up writing C code (and an R interface) to do it, which is about 1000x faster than the naive method! (72s became .09s on a 223 x 520 matrix). I added a
