create block diagonal with each rows
Dear R users, I'd like to create a block diagonal matrix with each rows in a matrix. Here is a simple example. (In fact, the matrix is big) x <- matrix(1:20, 4,5) > x [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5] [1,] 1 5 9 13 17 [2,] 2 6 10 14 18 [3,] 3 7 11 15 19 [4,] 4 8 12 16 20 With each rows in matrix x, I'd like to make the matrix below.

xyplot of function only shows diagonal plots
I expected this script to show nine panels, each with a plot of the function. But when I run it, only the diagonal panels have content. Executing > print(trel_1) shows what I expected in the upper left corner. I am using R ver. 2.11.0 and lattice ver. 0.18-8 on Windows XP under Eclipse and StatET. I have searched the documentation, but found no answer. What am I missing? --- simple.R --- #

diagonal matrices
Hello all, I have matrices V.i of dimension n.i x n.i, where i = 1, ..., J, and the sum of n.i equals N. (and n.i ! = n.j) goal: create one large matrix V, where V has matrices V.i on diagonal. I create each matrix V.i in a for loop (1 to J), so each time I'd like to augment V with the most recently calculated V.i, such that I'll have V after the final iteration of the for loop.

How to extract diagonals
Hello, I am using Mac OS X on a power book and R 2.5.0 I try to extract a diagonal from a dissimilarity matrix made with dsvdis, with this code: diag(DiTestRR) But I get this error message: Fehler in array(0, c(n, p)) : 'dim' spezifiziert ein zu großes Array english: Error in array(0, c(n, p)) : 'dim' specifies a too big array. Is there a limit to extract diagonals? I

replace zeros in a block diagonal matrix with small random values?
Hi All. Imagine you have a large block diagonal matrix. I'd like to replace the zeros in this matrix with small random (runif) numbers. Any ideas for a simple and efficient way to do this? Best regards, Rick DeShon

Flipping a heatmap
Hi I am using the heatmap function in package mva to look at large correlation matrices visually. Is there any way to "flip" the output of heatmap plot left-right so that, if presented with a correlation matrix, it plots the unity elements in the correlation matrix along a diagonal from top left to bottom right? For example: library(mva) x = matrix(rnorm(1000), ncol=10) z = cor(x)

Ordering every row of a matrix while ignoring off diagonal elements
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've been stuck on how to code so that I can order rows of a matrix without paying attention to the diagonal elements. Say, for example, I have a matrix d: > d [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [1,] 0.000000 2.384158 2.0065682 2.2998856 [2,] 2.384158 0.000000 1.4599928 2.4333213 [3,] 2.006568 1.459993 0.0000000 0.9733285 [4,] 2.299886

More block diagonal matrix construction code
Folks: In answer to a query, Andy Liaw recently submitted some code to construct a block diagonal matrix. For what seemed a fairly straightforward task, the code seemed a little "overweight" to me (that's an American stock analyst's term, btw), so I came up with a slightly cleaner version (with help from Andy): bdiag<-function(...){ mlist<-list(...) ## handle case in

block diagonal matrix function
Hello List I have just written a little function that takes two matrices as arguments and returns a large matrix that is composed of the two input matrices in upper-left position and lower-right position with a padding value everywhere else. (function definition and toy example below). I need nonsquare matrices and rowname() and colname() inherited appropriately. Two questions: (1) Is there a

as.dist with diagonal unequal zero
Hello and sorry that I still haven?t found a solution for my problem. I need to extract the lower and upper triangle from a square matrix including the diagonal. This diagonal is not zero in that special case. I tried with as.dist w<-as.dist(w, diag = TRUE) > w 1 2 3 4 5 1 0 2 2 0 3 3 8 0 4 4 9 14 0 5 5 10 15 20 0 but found no way to keep the diagonal that is in the

how ot replace the diagonal of a matrix
Dear useRs, Trying to replace the diagonal of a matrix is not working for me. I want a matrix with .6 on the diag and .4 elsewhere. The following code looks like it should work--when I lookk at mps and idx they look how I want them too--but it only replaces the first element, not each element on the diagonal. mps <- matrix(rep(.4, 3*3), nrow=n, byrow=TRUE) idx <- diag(3) mps idx mps[idx]

Optimization problem: selecting independent rows to maximize the mean
Dear R community, I have a dataframe with 500,000 rows and 102 columns. The rows represent spatial polygons, some of which overlap others (i.e., not all rows are independent of each other). Given a particular row, the first column contains a unique "RowID". The second column contains the "Variable" of interest. The remaining 100 columns ("Overlap1" ...

Need help putting histograms on the diagonal of a splom plot
Hello, I am in need of help in putting histograms on the diagonal of a plot produced with splom(). The plot matrix I am trying to produce is to have standard scatterplots in the upper-left triangle, contour plots in the lower-right triangle, and histograms on the diagonal. I have a function that does the first two, but the histograms on the diagonal has been beyond my ability. Here is my

extracting the diagonal of an inverse matrix
Dear R-users, I would like to know whether there is a way to extract a diagonal of an inverse matrix without computing the inverse of the matrix itself. The size of my matrices are really huge and, also using sparse matrix, computing the inverse leads to storage problems and low speed. In other words, given a square matrix A, I aim to know diag(B), where B=solve(A), without computing solve(A).

diagonal lines in legends of ggplot2
Hi, I have the following problem with ggplot2: When I specify black contours for bars in a barplot, ggplot automatically shows diagonal lines in the legend boxes. Is there a way, to remove these diagonal lines? Here's a simple example: library(ggplot2) df<-data.frame(x=gl(6,1),y=rnorm(6,100,50)) ggplot(df,aes(y=y,x=x,fill=x))+geom_bar(aes(group=x),colour='black',size=1)+
