barplot colors
Hi,
In barplot(height, col = ...), the col = vector recycles so that the
same colors are used for each bar. I would like to use different colors
in different bars (corresponding to another piece of information, here,
the region of the country being represented).
For example,
x = matrix(c(5,2,3,1),nrow=2)
barplot(x,col=1:4)
will draw two bars with two segments each, but each colored red and

heatmap.3
Hello again,
lately I have been playing a lot with heatmap functions,
in particular I complemented heatmap.2 with a nice feature from
heatmap.plus,
i.e. the possibility of assigning a matrix to ColSideColors so to take into
account more annotations.
Below is the code I introduced in heatmap.2, everything else is maintained
equal to heatmap.2:
if (!missing(ColSideColors)) {

Unexpected behaviour for RowSideColors in function heatmap
Hello,
I have come across some unexpected behaviour of the function heatmap in the stats package. This looks like a bug to me, but I might have misunderstood something.
When calling the function in symmetric mode, the ColSideColors are plotted correctly, but RowSideColors appear in reverse order. This code (modified from the example on the help page) demonstrates the problem:

problem formatting and positioning title in heatmap
I am using heatmap with the arguments below. The title size stays the
same no matter what I set cex.main to. Is this expected? Can I adjust
the title size in heatmap?
Also, the position of the main title is at the very upper edge of the
output and if I use a "\n" to stack the title the upper line is out of
bounds and doesn't show up.
I am outputting to pdf.
Any help? Thanks,

apply fn to many dataframes
Hi,
Say I have dataframes d1, d2, ... , dn, and I want to apply a
function to all of them. For example, say I want to change the name
of the second variable in each dataframe to "x2". The following doesn't work:
a = list(d1,d2,d3,d4)
lapply(a,function(x) names(x)[2] = "x2")
What would work?
Thanks for any help.

Pigeonhole and Dovecot2 with custom config file
I start my dovecot with the "-c /path/to/custom/config" option so I
can run multiple instances. Been trying out 2.0.1 so I can upgrade my
boxes cleanly, but I require managesieve. So after installing the
latest sources of the Pigeonhole plugin, I'm getting this when trying
to start dovecot:
# /usr/local/sbin/dovecot -c /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot_custom.conf

Dealing with missing values in HeatMap generation
Hi,
I want to generate a heatmap for my data (in a matrix). However, the
data has some missing values (represented as blank).
I get the following errors (with the blanks and with blanks replaced by
NA and including the option rm.na = TURE):

> g <- as.matrix(filedata)

moving color key in heatmap
Dear list,
I have a question on moving color keys when side color bars are added to a heatmap.
The R code below produces the color key in the upper left corner. Notice I have added side bars to the heatmap, but how could I move the color key below the image?
------
library(gplots)
data(mtcars)
x <- as.matrix(mtcars)
rc <- rainbow(nrow(x), start=0, end=.3)
cc <- rainbow(ncol(x),

MacOS R and tcltk
>From what I can glean from the sources and bundled packages, the tcltk
package isn't built by default for the MacOS port of R. Looking at the code
there doesn't seem to be any real reason not to do this except that perhaps
tcl/tk isn't available on the builders machine. Is this the case?
Since I have a need for cross platform access to tcltk from R, and since I

Help converting a data.frame to ordered factors
I have a 96x34 array of Likert scale data (96 cases, 34 items) of
ordered factors (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly
agree) that are coded numerically (1 through 5).
I cannot seem to convert this array (in any class) into ordered vectors.
I have all the cases as vectors of ordered factors, but any which way
I reassemble those vectors loses the ordered factors and converts

read.table( ... comment.char="#") truncated my data
Dear all,
I found that the new feature of the comment.char="#" argument in the
read.table function truncated my data while the data set actually contains
'#'. We analyze lot of data that contain '#'. This is really annoying and
it is also not compatible earlier version of R. I searched the R archive
and found the following message for the scan function. Is it

LMTP Proxy
Trying to figure out Proxying with LMTP to a few back end storage servers
for quota checking before accepting email delivery on the front end nodes.
If I connect to the back end server directly via telnet, everything works
great.
If I use a front-end server to proxy to the back end server, I don't get
the same result.
Running 2.2.4 on both front and back end servers.

NTLM oddities
Started implementing the MasterUser changes to my config files so I can
finally offer SPA for pop3/imap.
Things are working fine with the MasterUser (horray!), however one of my
guys started using SPA with Outlook Express and started getting another
users mailbox.
Turns out to be related to NTLM. His Outlook express is configured for the
username of 'johnsmith'. However, you'll see

scan(...comment.char="#") breaks my code
I've just discovered the recent addition of the comment.char arg to scan, a
useful feature no doubt but the default value of # rather than "" breaks my
code which looks for # as a delimeter in a file and provides a messy
incompatability with earlier versions of R and with Splus.
Is there any chance that this default could be changed to ""?

Reading labels for very large heatmaps
Hello,
I have a large (919 X 919), hierarchically clustered heatmap that I would
like to read the labels off of. I have tried saving the figure in pdf
format and enlarging it until I can see the labels, but if I make the labels
small enough to read (so that they don't overlap) using cexRow and cexCol,
they do not appear in the pdf. The limit seems to be anything below cexRow
or Col = 0.06.

customizable idle login timeouts?
We're in the process of migrating from mbox over to maildir.
I'm running into a problem with the proxy and timeouts. Appears the idle
timeout is set to 60 seconds. This is a bit too low for some of our large
mbox files :(
Any plans on adding the:
#define CLIENT_LOGIN_IDLE_TIMEOUT 60
#define AUTH_REQUEST_TIMEOUT
to the .conf file to be tunable on the fly?
I ended up just patching the

I see. Yes that's the same problem I have seen.
There is a behavioral difference (I think it's a FreeBSD bug) between
FreeBSD's iconv(3) and GNU implementation, and there is arguably a bug
with Dovecot that iconv(3) state should be reset for each multipart
part. The two together would trigger the problem
