number of items to replace is not a multiple of replacement length
Hey all,
I am writing a function in which I will have a matrix of 4 columns and a
variable amount of rows.
The first to columns will always contain be of the Character type, the third
and fourth columns
can be a variation of data types, usually characters and integers, but
sometimes lists or matrices.
At one point the code makes, for each row, a copy of that row, then it makes
some adjustments

setClass or setValidity?
Hi,
I'm reading up on S4 classes *). There seem to be at least two ways of input validation:
setClass() (using the 'validity' argument) and setValidity(). Is it a matter of taste which function is used? Or should more complex validation code better be put in a setValiditity call?

data.frame within a function (PR#9294) (cont'd)
This continues the message "data.frame within a function (PR#9294)" that
was posted on 2006/10/12. Duncan Murdoch kindly replied. I'm using the
current version R 2.4.0, but the same issue exists. Just copy and paste
the following code under R, and compare the output of f1() and f2() and
the output of f3() and f4(). Does anybody have any idea? Thanks.

plot question
Hi,
I am new to R so forgive me if the following query is somewhat simple. I have a small tab-separated file with n records of glucose values, one record per day, seven measurements per day. It looks like this:
date sober no vm nm va na vs
20091229 NA 6.8 NA 2.7 11.7 2.7 6.2
I'd like to make a graph on which the glucose day curves are plotted

rcom package
Hi,
I would like to make a program that reads excel files, and writes the cells of which contents is not a formula to another file. I don't think this is possible with RODBC, but it may be possible with rcom.
I read the documentation of the rcom package, but I was hoping somebody knows a good web resource for more eleborate info. I tried Googling, but alas (did you know rcom also is a

creating a data frame from a list
Dear all,
A few months ago, I asked for your help on the following problem:
I have a list with three (named) numeric vectors:
> lst = list(a=c(A=1,B=8) , b=c(A=2,B=3,C=0), c=c(B=2,D=0) )
> lst
$a
A B
1 8
$b
A B C
2 3 0
$c
B D
2 0
Now, I'd love to use this list to create the following data frame:
> dtf = data.frame(a=c(A=1,B=8,C=NA,D=NA),

extracting nested variances from lme4 model
I have a model:
mod1<-lmer( x ~ (1|rtr)+ trth/(1|cs) , data=dtf) #
Here, cs and rtr are crossed random effects.
cs 1-5 are of type TRUE, cs 6-10 are of type FALSE,
so cs is nested in trth, which is fixed.
So for cs I should get a fit for 1-5 and 6-10.
This appears to be the case from the random effects:
> mean( ranef(mod1)$cs[[1]][1:5] )
[1] -2.498002e-16

an IDE for R... JGR perhaps?
Hi,
I've just been browsing for IDEs for R, see e.g. http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20080413133953606/R.html
It's probably highly subjective, but which free IDE is the best one around? For the Python language, I've always been using IDLE. I like the syntax highlighting and the syntax suggestions the user gets while typing a function name. Ideally, the IDE should run on any

help in vectorization
Hi,
I have two data frames. One is like

m=c(trunc(runif(20,1,5)),trunc(runif(20,9,12))),

check menu button (tcltk)
Hi,
I am making a mock user interface in tcltk and I would like to add a 'check menu button' such as shown here: http://zetcode.com/tutorials/pygtktutorial/images/checkmenuitem.png
Does anybody know how to do this? I am quite new to R.
Cheers!!

UpdateLinks = FALSE
Hi,
I'm reading 100s of excel files and many of them contain links to external files (I hate that, but that aside). Every time such a file is opened, a menu pops up asking if I want to update the links. I never want to update the links. I used the macro recorder to see what code would be needed to suppress that message, but to no avail (I tried more variations, but one attempt is shown

Buenos días,
llevo unos dias peleando para realizar una consulta con INSERT en Windows

Ahora mismo estoy probando con DBI y odbc.

Remove specific rows in a matrix/data.frame
Hi,
imagine the following matrix/data.frame
Letter Number
a 1
a 1
b 1
b 0
c 0
c 1
d 0
d 0
If the numbers for two identical letters are also identical then I want to
remove either the first or the
second row of that letter. If for a letter the numbers are 1 and 0 I want to
remove the row with the 0.
That means if the code works I would and up with the following

Rodbc quesion: how to reliably determine the data type?
Hello,
How can I tell RODBC to scan all the records of an xls file to determine the
data type? If the first n records happen to be empty Rodbc assumes a character,
and any numbers are made <NA>. And if, for instance, the first n records contain
numbers, and later they also contain characters, those characters become NA.
Cheers!!
