export tables to Excel files
Dear R users,
I've just posted a similar question about Illustrator.
This time I would like to export the results of my statistic tables and
my dataframes into Excel files.
Up to now I've used write.csv(), but I have to resave every file in .xls
in Excel.
I would like to know if there is a function or package to export
directly into *.xls.
I have found xlsReadWrite which would be

Help function "?" in R 2.10.1
Hello everyone,
I have versions 2.7.2 and 2.10.1 installed on a machine that has no
access to internet.
In 2.7.2 I can use ? to get help on functions, which in 2.10.1 that
does not work, all I see is "starting httpd help server...done" and
then nothing.
Have I downloaded 2.10.1 incorrectly (=forgot to tick some box for
local help file repository) or is the internet help now the

loop on list levels and names
Hi everybody!
To use some functions, I have to transform my dataset into a list, where
each element contains one group, and I have to prepare a list for each
variable I have (altogether I have 15 variables, and many entries per
factor level)
Here is some part of my dataset:

variable name substitution
Hi everybody!
I'm trying to write a script to plot a histogram, a boxplot and a
qq-plot (under Windows XP, R2.10 if it matters)
What I want to do: define the variables (x and y) to be used at the very
beginning, so that I don't have to change all occurrences in the script
when I want to plot a different variable.
The dataset is called "ssfa". TO_POS is a categorical

R versions and PostScript files
Dear R users,
I have a desktop computer and a laptop, both of them with Ubuntu Lucid. The
former has R2.10 installed from Ubuntu repositories (this is the most recent
version in the repositories), while the latter has R2.13 from the CRAN
repositories.
I noticed that postscript files generated with R2.10 are "better" than
files generated with the latest release of R, in particular for

Problems with points in plots when importing from pdf to an SVG editor
Dear R-users
When trying to import graphics from an pdf-file to a Vector graphics editor
(I use Inkscape, but i've confirmed the same problem on adobe products), all
points in the graphics turn out as "q"s.
This example displays the beaviour:

plot(1:5)
dev.off()
When importing the file to inkscape, I get five neatly arranged little

R crash
Dear users,
By running the script below, R crashes systematically at the last
command, namely dev.off(), on Windows 7, but not on Windows XP.
I therefore don't provide a reproducible example and do not really
extract the relevant parts of the script because it has most likely
nothing to do with the script itself. I can do it though if you think it
might be relevant.

R takes long time to open
Hello.
Until today I've been using R2.9 and since today R2.10 (on a PC).
In both of them it takes about 20 sec for the prompt to appear IN R
console after I start R. And every time it says: "Previous saved work
space restored" - even if I have not saved any workspace or, in case
of R2.10 - even though I have not used it once.
In the older versions - R would start within 2-3 sec.

svg plot and dashed lines
Dear users,
When I boxplot(), the lines of the whiskers are dashed. However, when I
save in an svg file, the dashed lines of the whiskers are not dashed
anymore.
How can I have the dashed lines in the svg file?
I don't have this problem with a ps file, but I cannot edit such file as
easily as an svg file. That's why I'd like to stick to the svg format.
Thanks in advance,
Ivan

Illustrating kernel distribution in wheat ears
Dear all
R2.10 WinXP
I have a dataset dealing with the way different wheat cultivars build their yield.
Wheat ears are organised in spikelets where the spikelets can be numbered from the bottom, with even numbers on one side and odd on the other.
I know how many kernels there were in each spikelet after some months spent counting them...
Now I want to illustrate the differences between the

problems with text in plots when using illustrator
Hi folks,
I have some problems with plots (any) saved from R (saved from the menu). It
seems that text (either plot titles or axes) is sometimes not "concatenated"
in a full "vector" (Illustrator-speaking). I mean, sometimes, a given title
is broken in several different chunks even though in R, it's in one "block".
Moreover, axis values (especially those < 10)

problem pasting into Illustrator CS2
To Whom it May Concern:
I have been using R version 2.6.2 for awhile now, installed on a
PowerMac G5 running OS 10.4.11 I typically get Quartz graphics
output from R into Adobe Illustrator CS2 simply by copying and
pasting. Upon upgrading to R version 2.7.0, I now receive an error
from Illustrator when trying to paste R generated graphics from the
Quartz window into Illustrator. I do

SVG output on Windows OS
How may one save a graphic as svg on Windows? The svg() command is
recognized and functions well on Linux, etc., but not on Windows, it seems.
I'm trying to use Hadley Wickam's ggplot2 and I would like to be able to
save created charts as svg for later input into Illustrator. I am able to
accomplish this workflow under Linux, but I don't know how to get R to
recognize the svg() command

Having read the posts on producing perfect graphs in R, or using

Lately I am publishing in a journal that is very picky about their
graphics formats. It is more efficient for me to get the final picky

Mac: importing saved PDF figures into Illustrator CS
Hello,
This is a usage question for others with experience of R under the Aqua Mac OS X interface.
Basically, I don't succeed in importing PDF files (created with the 'Save As' menu to Quartz device windows) into Illustrator. Versions up to (and including?) 10 loose paths (lines/polygons) and or fill them in black. Version CS (11) on the Mac imports almost correctly, but, "to

Modify pdf file with Illustrator.
Dear list,
Some times I want to modify the pdf file which produced by R with
illustrator. But when I use Illustrator open the pdf file, it often
makes the pdf some little changed. Anyone have some suggestions? Is it
better to use other file type, not pdf? Or when I produced the pdf, I
should set some other parameters?
Thank you

Illustrator 7.0 worked . . . once?
Hi,
The first time I tried to run Adobe Illustrator 7 under wine it worked fine
(other than it wouldn't open or save any files). Now, it gives me an error
message: "Unable to find AIRes.dll. Please reinstall application." The file
AIRes.dll is right where it's supposed to be. Any ideas?

"\n" in legend using substitute and as.expression

Is it possible to force a hard return in an expression. I tried including
one for a legend using an expression and it didn't work. Here is my code,

unique function works funny
I have 3 nested functions, the core function goes like this:
listx<-function(x,tox)
{
xt=table(x)
wa=sort(unique(x,fromLast=FALSE))
print(xt)
print(wa)
......
return(kk)
}
listx get called in functionB, and functionB get called in functionC.
When I test functionB, the listx function works just fine. When I call
functionB from functionC, strange thing happened:
My result for xt:
