A programming question - is what I want to do possible in R?
I have a large data frame, 77 rows, with 10 columns. Each row represents a
unique individual with 10 characteristics, some of which are categorical
factors and some continuous numeric variables. Each of the ten variables is
important (the 10 columns obviously correspond to the individuals of
interest). Importantly, this data set represents a population (not sample)
of people with a certain medical

performing function on lists where each element is a data frame
I have browsed the archive, and played around with a whole bunch of ways of
approaching the problem, and I cannot get the answer that I want.
I have a list with 2000 elements. Each element is a data frame with 2
columns. As an example, see element 1999 below.

Problem with fitdistr for gamma in R 2.2.0
Dear R developers,
I have encountered strange behaviour of fitdistr for gamma in recent R
build i.e. 2.2.0. I have attached the code for data at the end of this mail
so you can reproduce the problem. In short, I am able to run fitdistr under
2.1.0 without problems, while I get the following error under 2.2.0
(Version 2.2.0 Patched (2005-11-15 r36348))

take two columns from a set of lists
say I have a matrix and lists like
x <- matrix(c(12.1, 3.44, 0.1, 3, 12, 33.1, 1.1, 23), nrow=2)
x.list <- lapply(seq_len(nrow(x)), function(i) x[i,])
if I want a column of the matrix x, I write
x[, 2]
for example.
But how can I do something similar for a set of lists, x.list, above?

size limit of string/parse a string and convert to vector
Hi,
I have a loop as follows,
dataStr <- character(0)
repeat{
fstr<-read.socket(sockfd)
if(fstr=="")
break
dataStr<-paste(dataStr,fstr)
}
at what point does dataStr stop accepting(gets full)? I'm sending millions of records over the socket and need to know if all of it can go into dataStr.
Also, Incase all of it cannot go into dataStr, I need to parse each

Implicit vs explicit printing and the call stack
Hi everyone,
I've run into a bit of strange problem with implicit vs explicit
printing and the call stack. I've included an example at the bottom of
this email. The basic problem is that I have an S3 object with a
print method. When the object is implicitly printed (ie. typed
directly into the console) the function arguments in the call stack
are exploded out to their actual values,

Documentation of model.frame() and get_all_vars()

This is about documentation for the model.frame() page. The
get_all_vars() function (added in R 2.5.0) is a great addition, but
the behavior of its '...' argument is different from that of
model.frame() with which it is documented and this creates ambiguity.

Two Problems while trying to aggregate a dataframe
Hello!
Given is an Excel-Sheet with actually 11,000 rows and 9 columns. I want
to work with the data in R. The contents are similar to my following
example.
I have a list with ID-number, personal name and two kinds of
loan-values. I want to aggregate the list, that for each person only one

reading header in txt file and making histogram
Dear all
I am a BEGINNER and have R on my Mac. I saved my excel file as .txt file, I
have just one column with first row as the column name. My file when read by
R looks like this. After reading the table I try to make a histogram by
hist(dbh), it says object dbh not found. What am I doing wrong? thanks

estimating NA values against selected slots
Dear R Users,
Could you please help me on the following issue?
I have a real large yearly data set. For each year I have
365 flow values. Some of the flow values are not known and that’s why you will
see NA written in those slots. I wanted to know, is there a way that I can
estimate those values? I tried approx command but it seems least helpful for
the kind of issue I am up against.

Linear Mixed Model set-up

I have some data covering contaminant concentrations in fish over a time
period of ~35 years. Each year, multiple samples of fish were taken (with

help for segmented package
Hi,
I am trying to find m breakpoints of a linear regression model. I
used the segmented package. It works fine for small number of
predicators and breakpoints.(3 r.v. 3 points). However, my model has
14 variables it even would not work even for just one breakpoints!.
The error message is always estimated breakpoints are out of range.

x-axis with month and year
Hey list!
I have a csv-file with two variables: (Date,CMI)

When I want to plot this dataset, R is sorting the date in alphabetical
order. Is there any way to tell R not to do it?
I know it is probably an easy issue but I couldn't find a solution so
far. I have seen so many tips already but can't apply it on my own
dataset.

struggling to plot subgroups

I have data that looks like this:

get_all_vars() does not handle rhs matrices in formulae
Hello again,
It appears that get_all_vars() incorrectly handles model formulae that
use a right-hand side (rhs) matrix. For example, consider these two
substantively identical models:
# model using named variables
mpg <- mtcars$mpg
wt <- mtcars$wt
hp <- mtcars$hp
m1 <- lm(mpg ~ wt + hp)
# model using matrix
y <- mtcars$mpg
