Cannot build custom locale with utf-8 charset
I am trying, without success, to compile a custom locale for the utf-8
character set. I have issued this command:
localedef --no-archive -f UTF-8 -i
/usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA at yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA at yyyy-mmm-dd.utf8
which produces the requisite files without reporting an error but
which none-the-less insists on using the iso-8859-1 charset:
LC_ALL=en_CA at yyyy-mm-dd locale charmap

RODBC: sqlSave leave primary key and other columns null
I have an existing table, and I am trying to use sqlSave to append
additional rows to this database. I omit the primary key, which is a
uniqueidentifier type (MS SQL), so that the database can populate that
field. However, I get the following error:
> sqlSave( ch, result, tablename=thetablename, append=TRUE,
rownames=FALSE, colnames=FALSE )

Excel export date format
Hi folks,
I have been tormented for some time by Excel's habit of exporting dates
to CSV files as mm/dd/yyyy format even if the dates are formatted
dd/mm/yyyy in the display. What's worse, if there are dates that are of
ambiguous (6/6/2011) and unambiguous (16/6/2011) format in the same
column, Excel reformats the unambiguous dates and leaves the ambiguous
ones as they were! Yesterday

Finding the right url for RCurl
Hi all,
I am using RCurl to try and download data from a website, but I'm having
trouble finding out what URL to use. Here is the site:
http://www.invescopowershares.com/products/holdings.aspx?ticker=PGX
See how in the upper right, above the displayed sheet, there's a link to
download the data as a .csv file? When I hit "copy url" and paste into
getURL in R, it doesn't

[Cucumber] Struggling with "multiple step definitions"
Hey gang,
I find myself struggling with multiple step definitions in cucumber
all the time. I regularly test the contents of my flash[:notice] in
steps, since I think that''s part of the behaviour of the app. So,
while implementing a new feature, I ran into the following error:

Need Help! Poor performance about randomForest for large data
Hi, dears,
I am processing some data with 60 columns, and 286,730 rows.
Most columns are numerical value, and some columns are categorical value.
It turns out that: when ntree sets to the default value (500), it says "can
not allocate a vector of 1.1 GB size"; And when I set ntree to be a very
small number like 10, it will run for hours.
I use the (x,y) rather than the (formula, data).

Read data with different column lengths
Dear r-help users,
I have the following simple problem: Reading data from a file. The
file is a .txt file exported ("save as...") from Excel (see below for
an example). The Excel file consists of two header rows (first row
consists of ticker symbols of stocks, the second row consists of
column explanations ("Date","Px Last"), followed by several rows of

pass character vector in instrument field of get.hist.quote function
I am new to R so I apologize if my question is trivial. I have not been able
to figure out whether what I want to do is even possible.
I have a data frame of stock ticker symbols which I store into R space from
a txt file as follows:
tickers <- read.csv("stocks.txt", header=FALSE, sep=",")
tickers <- tickers[1] / the tickers are stored in the first column

[OT] (slightly) - OpenOffice Calc and text files
Hello all,
I had a very strange looking problem that turned out to be due to unexpected (by me at least) format changes to one of my data files. We have a small lab study in which each run is represented by a row in a tab-delimited file; each row identifies a repetition of the experiment and associates it with some subjective measurements and times from our notes that get used to index another

Question about SwfdecAsScriptFunction in swfdec
Hello,
I got a question about the script function class(SwfdecAsScriptFunction)
design in swfdec.
Why doesn't a script function mark its
target(SwfdecAsScriptFunction::target) in the marking phase? What if the
function's target has been destroyed while the function itself is still kept
alive? (Answer myself: then there would be a segfault when executing that
function)
Let me give a

regression using GMM for mulltiple groups
Inthe code below I was trying to to obtain the GMM estimates for CAPM
(REGRESSION) for 36 stocks each have 180 observations, however it only gives
me one output rather than 36.
In SAS i would just put in a *By statement*. I have a variable TICKER that
categorize them into 36 groups.
*How can I obtain all 36 output instead of just one.*

Using string to call/manipulate an object
I am using getSymbols function from quantmod package to get price data from
internet.
Currently I have:
my.ticker <- "IBM"
getSymbols(my.ticker,src="google")
This creates an xts object named my.ticker which contains historical price
data for IBM.
How can I call and manipulating this xts object using my original string
my.ticker?

two different date formats in the same variable
How does one convert to a date format when survey respondents have
used two different date formats whilst entering their data. There were
clearly told to use mm/dd/yyyy but humans being humans some entered
mm/dd/yy. There was even validity checks on the forms but I allowed
them to be overridden since the data is more holy than the format.
The data was downloaded as a csv and read.csv was used to
