Finding cases in one subset that are closet to another subset
Good afternoon Running R2.10.0 on Windows I have a data frame that includes (among much else) a factor (In_2006) and a continuous variable (math_3_4). I would like to find the 2 cases for In_2006 = 0 that are closest to each case where In_2006 = 1. My data looks like In_2006 math_3_4 0 55.1 1 51.6 1 18.1 1 26.6 1 14.1

qqplot
Hi, We could use qqplot to see how two distributions are different from each other. To show better how they are different (departs from the straight line), how is it possible to plot the straight line that goes through them? I am looking for some thing like qqline for qqnorm. I thought of abline but how to determine the slope and intercept? Best wishes, Carol

Missing data and LME models and diagnostic plots
Hello Running R2.9.2 on Windows XP I am puzzled by the performance of LME in situations where there are missing data. As I understand it, one of the strengths of this sort of model is how well it deals with missing data, yet lme requires nonmissing data. Thus, m1.mod1 <- lme(fixed = math_1 ~ I(year-2007.5)*TFC_, data = long, random =

Bayesian regression stepwise function?
Hi everyone, I am wondering if there exists a stepwise regression function for the Bayesian regression model. I tried googling, but I couldn't find anything. I know "step" function exists for regular stepwise regression, but nothing for Bayes. Question on mixed effect models with LME
Good afternoon Using R 2.9.2 on a machine running Windows XP I have a longitudinal data set, with data on schools and their test scores over a four year period. I have centered year, and run the following m1.mod1 <- lme(fixed = math_1 ~ I(year-2007.5)*TFC_, data = long, random = ~I(year-2007.5)|schoolnum, na.action = "na.omit") where

Windows 7 editor - I can't make RWinEdt work
Good morning I just got a new computer with Windows 7. R works fine, but the editor I am used to using "RWinEdt" does not. I did find one blog post on how to get RWinEdt to work in Windows 7, but I could not get those instructions to work either. Is there a patch for RWinEdt? If not, is there another good R editor that works under Windows 7? I tried RSiteSearch with various

Variable selection in NLME or LME4
Good morning I am learning about NLME and LME4, using Pinheiro and Bates and other materials from Douglas Bates, but I have not seen anything on how to do variable selection sensibly in this type of model. In OLS regression, I frequently use the lasso, but googling did not reveal a method for lasso with mixed models. Most of the material I've seen on these packages is about models with very

Invert the sign of a number
Hello, just a simple question How can I do to invert the sign of a number? (for example: -4 to 4, 2 to -2 and so on..) I was looking for a specific function in R but I didn't found it... thank you Francesco -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Invert-the-sign-of-a-number-tp26110267p26110267.html Sent from the R help mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hi everybody, well, I definitely don't understand anything. Why the hist function with freq=FALSE gives such a strange result??? R <- c(-1.10, 0.79, -1.17, -0.53, -0.26, -0.22, 0.29, -0.26, -0.26, 0.39) hist(R, freq=FALSE, breaks=10) Thanks everybody [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

comma as decimal separator in xtable
Hello, How can I make xtable print a comma as decimal separator? Setting the option OutDec isn't enough for xtable: library(xtable) options(OutDec = ",") x <- c(1.1, 1.2, 1.3) y <- c(2.3, 2.2, 2.1) d <- data.frame(x, y) d print(xtable(d)) Thanks! Jakson Aquino

Vim R plugin-2
Dear R users, People who uses vim in Linux/Unix may be interested in checking the plugin for R that I'm developing: http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2628 The plugin includes omni completion for R objects, code indentation and communication with R running in a terminal emulator (xterm or gnome-terminal). This last feature was already present in Johannes Ranke's plugin.

Vim-R-plugin (new version)
Dear R users, The author of Tinn-R (Jose Claudio Faria) now is co-author of Vim-R-plugin2, a plugin that makes it possible to send commands from the Vim text editor to R. We added many new key bindings, restructured the menu and created new Tool Bar buttons. The new version is available at: http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2628 NOTES: (1) Some old key binding changed,

using read.table, removing extra quotation mark from a text field? (e.g. ""cat" )
I am using read.table to import a text file within R.   There are several "errors" in my text file.  An "extra" quotation mark has inadvertently been included within a few text fields.   e.g. for a pipe (|) delimited text file, I have something similar to this:   1|7|30| "dog" 2|6|25| ""cat" 3|4|20|"" 4|5| 56| "mouse" 5|3|56|

Could Rstd_Busy do something (src/unix/sys-std.c)?
Currently the function Rstd_Busy() does nothing (src/unix/sys-std.c): void attribute_hidden Rstd_Busy(int which) { } The function is called through a pointer and R interfaces can change this pointer and, thus, use a different function. I don't plan to create a whole new interface to R, but I maintain a package whose aim is to provide a new feature to R when it's running in a

Bug in gmodels CrossTable()?
Is the code below showing a bug in Crosstable()? My expectation was that the values produced by xtabs were rounded instead of truncated: library(gmodels) abc <- c("a", "a", "b", "b", "c", "c") def <- c("d", "e", "f", "f", "d", "e") wgt <- c(0.8, 0.6, 0.4, 0.5, 1.4, 1.3)

Network Analysis
Hi, I am working on a project to understand the linkages between various websites. My data currently looks like the following: Variables: Website referral_site_1 referral_site_2 ... destination_site_1 destination_site_2 ... The values in these fields are just websites. So for every website in the first column, I have the top referral and destination websites. I'd like to do some strength
