installing R on Ubuntu, can ignore warning messages?
Installing R on Ubuntu 8.10, ( using sudo apt-get install r-base , and using one of the cran sites (cran.cnr.berkeley.edu)) the installation process says something about not having some gpg public key and "are you sure you want to download non-authenticated stuff [y/n]" (to which I answered yes). I'm assuming this warning can be ignored? Also: even though the Ubuntu install and

To hell with OpenSuse, ditch it and go to Ubuntu
this blog entry http://www.viggie.com/blog/software/opensuse-ubuntu-usage-experience , if credible , would seem to suggest that there is no good reason to choose Suse. I really don't have time for such nonsense, maybe I'll just reinstall as Ubuntu. Also, noticed that GCC was not installed when Suse installed. That's just weird, GCC is part of Linux. And if you try to install GCC,

easy way to find all extractor functions and the datatypes of what they return
Am I asking for too much: for any object that a stat proc returns ( y <- lm( y~x) , etc ) ) , is there a super convenient function like give_all_extractors( y ) that lists all extractor functions , the datatype returned , and a text descriptor field ("pairwisepval" "lsmean" etc) That would just be so convenient. What are my options for querying an object so that I can

[PATCH ubuntu repost] Ubuntu: Use apt-get instead of aptitude when installing guestfsd.
Previously posted here: http://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2009-December/msg00041.html I can't get aptitude to work under debirf (not on Ubuntu anyway), so using apt-get is necessary for me. Rich. -- Richard Jones, Virtualization Group, Red Hat http://people.redhat.com/~rjones virt-df lists disk usage of guests without needing to install any software inside the virtual machine.

Ubuntu 14 Warning
This morning, 2 of us noticed that running contrib/scripts/install_prereq on a fresh Ubuntu 14 system actually removed critical packages like network-manager, openssh-server, perl, git, and a bunch of others. It appears that the culprit is the libsnmp-dev package. It's default conflict resolution solution is to uninstall conflicting packages and the alternate solution is to correctly upgrade

Hmisc and Ubuntu (aptitude install)
Hi, I'm trying to get the Hmisc module on my Ubuntu Hardy Heron install. I tried getting Hmisc from within R by issuing the standard 'install.packages' command, but it said I needed 'gfortran' to compile. I thought I could circumvent this by using 'aptitude' to get the package 'r-cran-hmisc', but when I got it, the package had critical missing parts (got

--timeout=... lesson learned...
I thought other might benefit from this lesson learned and thought it maybe should be added to the man-pages. I thought my network connection was glitchy and hence set rsync up for --timeout=120 but I found out that I was actually causing the glitch with this script: #! /bin/sh - while true; do rsync -avz --progress --timeout=120 --delete /media/rsync_gb01/movies/ myserver:movies; sleep 120; done

Need help Upgrading to R version >=v2.11 on Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04 LTS)
Hi, I'd like to use ggplot2, which I think works best on some R release >=v2.11 or so. However, with Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, 'aptitude' packages show me only a version for 2.6. Can I install more recent version on this Ubuntu version, and if so, what is the most painless way to do this (is there some way to use 'aptitude'? Can I download a binary? Do I have to

Portal + Intel HD Graphics 3000 + Ubuntu Natty
I just set up my new Lenovo ThinkPad X220 for use with Ubuntu Natty. All is well (even the function keys work!) except for 3D games. I'm not asking a lot here - these are games that are supposed to run at least decently on a HD 3000 accelerator. So far I've tried Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it's Linux-native demo, and Portal. ADD loads to it's menu, but nothing (like 3D

Answering the Hydrogen Audio thread
Take a look at how the Opus Tools package handles it. So far as I remember, it requires minimal changes to the file(s) containing references to the main entry point and to fopen. It imports the command line arguments as wchar_t and converts them to UTF-8, and has replacement functions for fopen and some text output that accept UTF-8 instead of ANSI. I think it automatically kicks in on definition
