Date conversions
Hi all,
I'm having a little bit of trouble with some date conversions and
am hoping someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.
OK, I have two sources of data that provide date info in a csv file
differently. I've attached a small zipped file with two text files
that illustrate both. (Is it ok to send attachments to this list? Not

answered me but my doubts remain unresolved. Thanks for the clarification,
but perhaps I wasn't clear enough in posting my questions.
I've got a postgres database which I read into R. The first column is

Timezone issue with strftime/strptime and %z and %Z
Hello!
I've been trying to get this right for quite a while now and fear
there is an easy solution I just don't see. I did not have this
problem in Linux, and I searched r-help and Google but did not find a
solution, but of course I am grateful for and resources I might not
have found our not understood yet.
I try to parse a time stamp with time zone. I essentially just want to

Add 1 week to date with hours included for subset
Forum,
I've got hourly data for roughly 5 months of time that I want to subset into
successive weeks. The first two elements of the dataset are
well.80.2$date[1]
>[1] 6/12/2000 2:00
>9256 Levels: 10/1/2001...
well.80.2$date[2]
>[1] 6/12/2000 3:00
>9256 Levels: 10/1/2001....
and so on until mid-october. I've been able to add 1 week the first element

Extent of time zone vulerability for POSIX date and time classes
Hi.
I frequently convert date and time data to and from character
representations. I'm frustrated with chron, because 'seconds' are
required to create a time object (my input data never has seconds).
More importantly, I cannot make chron print the format 12/30/2006 (which
my output data requires).
I really like the format flexibility of strftime() and strptime(), but

time zone problems
Folks,
I'm having trouble with how datetime objects with time zones are set
and plotted. This may be the result of my running R (2.4.0) on a
Windoze XP box. Perhaps not. Here are two example problems I need
advise on if you have time:
1) I collect data with dates (often as a fractional day of year) in
UTC. Using strptime to create date time objects appears to force the

Thanks Gabor, with the alternative step you've told me the problem is
resolved. Comparing the two procedures:

write.table read.table with Dates
I've found several similar issues with write.table/read.table
with Dates on this list, but trying to follow this advice I still
get an error.
First, I read in data from several files, constructing several date/time
columns using ISOdatetime
> str(Tall$Begin)
'POSIXct', format: chr [1:40114] "2005-10-02 00:00:00" "2005-10-02
00:00:00" ...
> length(Tall$Begin)

I have some questions and comments on timezones.
Problem 1.
# get current time in current time zone
> (now <- Sys.time())
[1] "2003-07-29 18:23:58 Eastern Daylight Time"
# convert this to GMT
> (now.gmt <- as.POSIXlt(now,tz="GMT"))
[1] "2003-07-29 22:23:58 GMT"
# take difference
> now-now.gmt

Factor w/ 51 levels "1/10/03","1/13/03",..:

which i want to convert to class POSIXlt to extract the day, so:

and:

Could someone explain to me why the following result is not a integer?
> difftime(strptime("24NOV2004", format="%d%b%Y"), strptime("13MAY2004",

Time difference of 195.0417 days

Data is received where one of the columns is a datetimestamp. At midnight,
the value represented as text in this column consists of just the date part,

Find out the day of week for a chron object?
I know that this is correct:
library(chron)
x = dates("01-03-04", format="d-m-y", out.format="day mon year")
print(x)
It gives me the string "01 Mar 2004" which is correct.
I also know that I can say:
print(day.of.week(3,1,2004))
in which case he says 1, for today is monday.
My question is: How do I combine these two!? :-) I have a

Problem(?) in strptime() -- short version
I decided my earlier email on this topic was rather long and wordy;
here's a condensed version.
I am sitting at a Solaris computer in the US/Pacific timezone.
I have a file of data having times that includes the following three values
2002-4-7 1:30:00 GMT
2002-4-7 2:30:00 GMT
2002-4-7 3:30:00 GMT
I have not been able to find a way to correctly convert these to
either of the POSIX

Problem to convert date to number
Hi R users,
I have a maybe small problem which I cannot solve by myself.
I want to convert
"chron" "dates" "times"
(04/30/06 11:35:00)
to a number with as.POSIXct.
The Problem is that I can't choose different timezones. I always get "CEST"
and not "UTC" what I need.
date = as.POSIXct(y,tz="UTC")

Week of the Year date conversion
Hello there fellow R-users,
I have received some data which comes in the following format:
example1<-"200301"
The first 4 digits correspond to the year and the remaining 2 digits
correspond to the week of the year.
I have tried to convert this to a date by using strptime as follows:

Converting ordinal dates and time into sensible formats

I am having a little trouble working with "strptime" and I was hoping
someone might be able to give me a hand. I have an instrument that outputs
an ordinal date and time in two columns something like this:
