optim(…, method=‘L-BFGS-B’) stops with an error message while violating the lower bound
Hello:
The development version of Ecdat on R-Forge contains a vignette
in which optim(?, method=?L-BFGS-B?) stops with an error message while
violating the lower bound.
To see all the details, try the following:
install.packages("Ecdat", repos="http://R-Forge.R-project.org")
Then do "help(pac=Ecdat)" -> "User guides, package

obtain intermediate estimate using optim
Hi,
Currently I am trying to solve a minimization problem using optim as method Nelder-Mead. However, Neldel-Mead needs many iterations until it finally converges. I have set $control.trace and $control.report such that I can see the value of the function at each iteration. I do see that I set the convergence criteria to strict in the sense that the function value does not change much. However,

R crashes when loading rgl package before minqa package
Hej,
Calling newuoa (from the minqa package) makes R crash when the package rgl
is loaded first. This however only on certain selected data.
The data used for testing (saved to 'bugs.R'):

Non-GPL packages for R
Subject: Non-GPL packages for R
Packages that are not licensed in a way that permits re-distribution on
CRAN are frequently a source of comment and concern on R-help and other
lists. A good example of this problem is the Rdonlp2 package that has
caused a lot of annoyance for a number of optimization users in R. They
are also an issue for efforts like Dirk Eddelbuettel's cran2deb.

Makefile.in diff against CVS to prevent man/config rebuild every make
Bug: all .out files get rebuilt every make. This is silly, and breaks make
install if root cannot write to your build dir.
Fix: add dependancy check sop .out files only get rebuilt if the source
file changes
FixBug: if any source file gets changed, all .out files get rebuilt. This
is because man pages and config files both get .out extensions but get
created differently. It's

symbolic and algebraic computation
I needed a symbolic and algebraic computation software. The best solution
I've found so far is maxima computer algebra system.
I was wondering if there is any R package that has similar features as
maxima's or somebody could point me to reference manuals on how to use R for
this purpose.
Thanks,
Angel

Use of cfortran.h?
I'm planning to try to use Mike Powell's new BOBYQA optimization routine
to see if it is a good candidate to eventually replace Nelder-Mead as the
optim() default. (Don't panic -- this won't happen quickly.) Mike writes
f77 code. After some chasing about, I've realized that because
optimization codes need to call the objective function written in R, they
need to use a language

I was being an idiot - configure was bombing out & I didn't notice (boy
that openssl version error message is loooooong...)
With Mr. Wilson's patch, I still get:
"sandbox-solaris.c", line 22: #error: "--with-solaris-privs must be used
with the Solaris sandbox"

file ownership
Hello,
I'm pleased to become a list member.
Excuse me! I need your help.
My problem is that: We have a Samba server running on Linux, this is a
PDC in our LAN. There is a share in the server with full access for any
user (that's the idea), but when a user writtes a file in the share,
he/she becomes the new file owner, and the write permission is
exclusively for him/her, consequently

(no subject)
Hi,
I would also be in favor of a stronger stance on licenses. In
industry, where we can really get in big trouble for violating a
license,
we often maintain internal repositories, or need to be careful about
filtering
what is used from CRAN. I think that is should really be a requirement
the package
authors commit to stating what the restrictions are on their packages.

Order of methods for optimx
Dear R-er,
For a non-linear optimisation, I used optim() with BFGS method but it
stopped regularly before to reach a true mimimum. It was not a problem
with limit of iterations, just a local minimum. I was able sometimes to
reach better minimum using several rounds of optim().
Then I moved to optimx() to do the different optim rounds automatically
using "Nelder-Mead" and

Computer algebra in R - would that be an idea??
>From time to time people request symbolic computations beyond what D() and deriv() etc can provide. A brief look at the internet shows that there are many more or less developed computer algebra packages freely available. Therefore, I wondered if it would be an idea to try to 'integrate' one of these packages in R, which I guess can be done in more or less elegant ways... I do not know

Once more, with diffs... (configure.in aclocal.m4 patch against CVS)
The attached unified diff fixes configure so that all --with-libfoo options
are allowed to be --with-libfoo=PATH. If the option is specified with a
PATH, only that PATH is searched for the library. If it is specified as
=yes or with no argument, it tries without modifying anything, and then
tries looking in /usr/local. The SunOS5 targets no longer add /usr/local to
include or library paths

Soft limit quota
I'm using dovecot on our new mail server and it is pretty good. But I
have a problem regarding quota limits, I am using quota plugin on imap,
pop3 and LDA, the deliver agent blocks new messages for delivery, like
hard quota. I'd like to use LDA with quota plugin regarding soft quota.
Thanks for any clues,

Nmbd question...
Hi!
I'm a Linux beginner, and I installed Suse Linux 8.2 to my computer.
I installed Samba too... Then I configured it... I wrote in to the web
browser: http://localhost:901. Swat came in, and I configured things
what I read in a Samba book. Then I started smbd, and nmbd. Smbd
worked, but nmbd won't start! I made a probe to write in the "smbd -D"
command. It worked... But by

y axis in histograms
Hi all,
This is my first post, I hope you will help me.
I've some data to present with histograms. I have few values with almost 99% of
the frequencies (thousands) and some other values with low frequencies (below
one hundred) that I want to emphasize. I think if I could present the logarithms
of the frequencies, these could be presented in a more convenient way, but I
don't know how
