Stepwise SVM Variable selection
I have a data set with about 30,000 training cases and 103 variable.
I've trained an SVM (using the e1071 package) for a binary classifier
{0,1}. The accuracy isn't great.
I used a grid search over the C and G parameters with an RBF kernel to
find the best settings.

Nominal variables in SVM?
Hi,
The answers to my previous question about nominal variables has lead me
to a more important question.
What is the "best practice" way to feed nominal variable to an SVM.
For example:
color = ("red, "blue", "green")
I could translate that into an index so I wind up with
color= (1,2,3)
But my concern is that the SVM will now think that the values are

SVM coefficients
Hello,
I'm using the svm function from the e1071 package.
It works well and gives me nice results.
I'm very curious to see the actual coefficients calculated for each
input variable. (Other packages, like RapidMiner, show you this
automatically.)
I've tried looking at attributes for the model and do see a
"coefficients" item, but printing it returns an NULL result.

Factoring a variable
Hi,
I have a dataset where the results are coded ("yes", "no") We want to
do some machine learning with SVM to predict the "yes" outcome
My problem is that if I just use the as.factor function to convert, then
it reverses the levels.

Erros with RVM and LSSVM from kernlab library
Hello,
In my ongoing quest to develop a "best" model, I'm testing various forms
of SVM to see which is best for my application.
I have been using the SVM from the e1071 library without problem for
several weeks.
Now, I'm interested in RVM and LSSVM to see if I get better performance.
When running RVM or LSSVM on the exact same data as the SVM{e1071}, I

Data format for KSVM
Hi,
I have a process using svm from the e1071 library. it works.
I want to try using the KSVM library instead. The same data used wiht
e1071 gives me an error with KSVM.
My data is a data.frame.

Save model and predictions from svm
Hello,
I'm using the e1071 package for training an SVM. It seems to be working
well.
This question has two parts:
1) Once I've trained an SVM model, I want to USE it within R at a later
date to predict various new data. I see the write.svm command, but
don't know how to LOAD the model back in so that I can use it tomorrow.
How can I do this?

svm works but tune.svm give error
Hello,
I'm using the e1071 library for SVM functions.
I can quickly train an SVM with:
svm(formula = label ~ ., data = testdata)
That works well.
I want to tune the parameters, so I tried:
tune.svm(label ~ ., data=testdata[1:2000, ], gamma=10^(-6:3), cost=10^(1:2))
THIS FAILS WITH AN ERROR:
'names' attribute [199] must be the same length as the vector [184]

Create Variable names dynamically
Hi,
I want to create variable names from within my code, but can't find any documentation for this.
An example is probably the best way to illustrate. I am reading data in from a file, doing a bunch of stuff, and want to generate variables with my output. (I could make a "list of lists" and name all the elements, but I really want separate variables.)

Missing functions in package e1071(Win*)

After unziping the CRAN file e1071.zip
on my Win95 library directory, I start R and
type

After that, help commands of the e1071
functions work (i.e., help(read.pnm), BUT
some functions themselves are not available:

Plot multiple columns
I'm running a long MCMC chain that is generating samples for 22 variables.
I have each run of the chain as a row in a matrix.
So: Chain[,1] is the column with all the samples for variable one.
Chain[,2] is the column with all the samples for variable 2, etc.
I'd like to fit all 22 on a single page to print a nice summary. It is
OK if the graphs are small, I just need to show the

Can't load e1071
After upgrading to 1.7.0 under debian linux, I can't get e1071 working
properly.
The first problem I had was that g++-3.0 was the standard compiler but
wasn't installed, so I installed it. e1071 then installed correctly, but I
get the following:

R on Multi Core
Hi,
Our discussions about 64 bit R has led me to another thought.
I have a nice dual core 3.0 chip inside my Linux Box (Running Fedora 11.)
Is there a version of R that would take advantage of BOTH cores??
(Watching my system performance meter now is interesting, Running R will
hold a single core at 100% perfectly, but the other core sites idle.)

Fast Normalize by Group
Hi,
I have a very large data set (aprox. 100,000 rows.)
The data comes from around 10,000 "groups" with about 10 entered per group.
The values are in one column, the group ID is an integer in the second column.
I want to normalize the values by group:
for(g in unique(groups){
x[group==g] / sum(x[group==g])
}
This works find in a loop, but is slow. Is there a faster way to do

import data from Matlab & error msg when install package "e1071"
Hello,
I am trying to import data from Matlab..
when i looked up R documentation, it says, package "e1071" have command
(read.octave) to import data from octave.
but when I tried to install package by using:
install.packages("e1071");
I got the following message: ( BTW, my platform is linux version 2.4.18-3
my gcc is 2.96).

reading svm function in e1071
Hi,
If I try to read the codes of functions in e1071 package, it gives me following error message.

Can someone help me on this how to read the codes of the functions in the e1071 package?

Can't install "e1071"
I observed the same behavior as Edward this morning with R-1.2.2 on Red Hat
Linux 7.0. There appears to be a problem with the library in netpbm-9.5-5,
even after hunting down the missing shhopt.h that pbmplus.h is looking for.
I worked around the problem by compiling e1071 without pbm support (moved
pbm.c to pbm.c.bak).

when I use following parameter, only one predictor, there is an error.
