axis labels in multiple plots
Hi,
I'am trying to make a multiple bar plot over a map and I'm having difficulties with the distance
between axes labels and the axis. Trying to control this with mgp does not help because it
controls both axes simultaneously. For example, with default values (mgp = c(3, 1, 0)) y-axis
labels are ok, but x-axis labels are not. Setting mgp = c(3, 0, 0) gives good x-axis labels but

Two different scales for the same axis in the same plot.
Hello,
Could anyone tell me how to plot data on two different scales in the same axis in the same plot?
Here is my quandary:
The range of my X axis runs from 0 to 10, but the majority of my meaningful data
lies between 7 and 10. The data from 0 to 7 is essentially noise.
Is there a way for me to present my data such that the range from 0 to 7 takes
up a smaller amount of space on the graph

axis labels
Dear list,
why does the distance between the axis labels and the tick marks looks
different for x axis and y axis in the plot (see code below).
In fact, the x axis labels look furthest from the tickmarks than in the y
axis.
How can I make them look the same?
par(mfrow=c(1,1), cex.axis = 0.5, cex.lab = 0.5)
plot(1,1, axes = F)
axis(1)
axis(2)
Thanks in advance

manipulating axis labels in grid and lattice
I am trying to use wireframe at the moment and the axis labels are
overlapping with the tick labels. It seems that gpar does not yet
utilize the mgp argument. Is there anyway to manipulate the position of
the axis labels?
The best I can manage so far is to manipulate the cex so as to shrink
everything down.

Showing time progression on (triangle) plots
Hi,
I have made some nice triangle plots showing the projected airborne,
landborne and oceanborne fraction of anthropogenic emitted carbon dioxide
at 10 year intervals for the next century.
Currently all ten points on my plot are identical so I can't distinguish
between them. I would like to be able to track the trend as the century
progresses.
How can I show the time progression on the

Increase space between xlab and X axis tick labels
People,
I am using the "las=2" parameter to rotate the labels for the X axis
ticks but it means that they are almost touching the "xlab" string. I
have been messing around with the "mai" paremeter but that doesn't help
- is there some way of increasing the space between xlab and the X axis
tick labels?
Thanks,
Phil.

axis label config mgp
I have long axis labels (8units) on the x axis and 2 unit number labels on
the y axis. I need to move the x axis title without moving the y axis
title. I have used mgp=c(title, label and line), but mgp moves both the x
and y titles. The following puts the y axis title way way out to the left.
Anyone know how to move just the x axis.

How can I make the distance between an axis-label and the axis bigger?

text/mtext axis labels on graphs
Hello everyone
I have problem with axis labels on graphs, I have my code as below:

Plot: Distance between tick and tick label on y-axis
Hello,
I want to reduce the distance between my ticks and their labels. I managed
to do it for the x-axis, but the y-axis puzzles me. Here's an example where
there is no space between the x-asix ticks and labels.
par(las=1)
plot(runif(50), type="l",xaxt="n",yaxt="n",ylab="", bty="l")
axis(2)
axis(1,padj=-1.5)
#However,
axis(2,padj=-1.5)

axis() ignores supplied value of argument mgp[3]?
It seems that when an argument 'mgp' is supplied to axis(),
the mgp[2] value (position of tick mark labels) is honoured
but the mgp[3] value (position of axis line) is ignored.
Example:
plot(1:5, xaxt='n', ann=FALSE)
par(mgp=c(0,2,1))
axis(1, at=2:4, mgp=c(0,-2,-3))
Axis line is plotted at margin line 1, tick mark labels at line -3.
Is this a bug?

changing the text offset for axis labels
Hi, all,
I was wondering if there is a way to change the offset of axis labels
from the axis. In other words, I need the axis labels closer to the
acis than the default. Thanks for the help.
Best wishes,

Positioning of axis titles
Hi,
I have created a plot using filled.contour() and have the problem that
one of the axis titles and an axis label are overlapping. I have tried
changing par()$mgp (with, e.g. par(mgp=c(4,1,0)) ), but this just
makes the title go off the screen. I can't work out how to make the
plot take up less space in the window, so I can hopefully change mgp
and sort the problem. Is changing mgp the only

how to move x-axis labels down
Hi,
In the code below, the labels I put on the x-axis are too high (they cross the
axis). Can anyone tell me how to move them down? I've tried adj=, padj=, mar=,
and various other things, but cannot move them down.
Thanks.

Space between axis label and tick labels
I'm writing an publication in two column format and need to shrink some
plots. After increasing the axis labels it does not look nice at all.
The y-axis label and tick labels almost touch each other and the x-axis
tick labels expand into the plot instead of away from it. Is there a
better way than "cex" to control the:
1) font size of axis and tick labels
2) font thickness

How to control spaces between axis, tick and label in xyplot or xYplot?
Dear R users,
I encounter a problem regarding space control in xyplot. Basically, I want
to control spaces between label, tick and axis. I remember there is a
function called mgp in general plot. Is there a similar function for xyplot
or xYplot?
Below is my basic code:

Rotated, Right-Justified Labels for Shortened Tick Marks
Hello R-help,
I'm trying to make a fairly simple plot axis that goes something like
this:
plot(-10:10,-10:10, yaxt='n')
axis(side=2, las=1, hadj=1, tck=-.01, cex.axis=.6)
...but as you can see, the labels are not close enough to the y-axis
(where I want them... to save space for publication).
Can anybody help me figure out how to move these labels over the the
right a bit?

Can one aply 'mgp' to individual axis?
Dear R-wizards!
I want to move the axis label of the y-axis a little bit
more apart from the border of the plot (otherwise, it would overlap
with my horizontal numbering). 'par(mgp(3.5, 1, 0))' does it properly.
Unfortunately, it also moves the x-axis label which does not look good.
Is there a way to specify 'mgp' for each axis separately or
is there another way to move just

Multiple backgroundrb servers?
What are people are doing when they need to deploy a new code base? You
can''t just restart backgroundrb, because then you lose any long-running
backgroundrb processes. But then you''d conceivably have to wait several
hours for all your procs to complete before pushing out the new code base.
I was originally thinking that during code deploys, we''d start up a second
