ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes) capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin. For more info on Ferret see: http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/ The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it with you. Regard it as a

concurrency / #search_each problem / segfault
Hello everyone, I was stress-testing my application (running on Rails via FastCGI) by letting two concurrent users (not human .. an app called ''siege'') a) save an Article and b) search for all Articles. I am searching via Article.ferret_index.search_each( ..) do |doc_id,score| doc = index[doc_id] .. end and writing via Article.ferret_index <<

Cannot delete for id of type Array
Hello list, I have a little weird error when deleting documents from the index. I''m using the following code. ferret_index = Ferret::Index::Index.new(:path => FERRET_INDEX_PATH) query = Ferret::Search::TermQuery.new(:fk_file_id, "#{_fk_file_id}") ferret_index.search_each(query) do | id | ferret_index.delete(id) end And I get the following error Cannot delete for id of

index.rb:384 [BUG]
Hi folks, I''ve working and playing with acts_as_ferret and follow this fantastic tutorial: http://www.railsenvy.com/2007/2/19/acts-as-ferret-tutorial When I try to implement the field storage tip, it crash. So, I try to make it via script/console: 1. I have a simple model called Articles: class Article < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_ferret :fields =>

Updating Index Is Very Slow
Hi, I am experiencing very poor performance when updating my index. For example, to update the index for 10 documents, it is taking 3 to 4 seconds. My index is currently very small... with probably less than 100 docs in it. I have created my index as follows: GIFT_INDEX = Index::Index.new(:path => "#{index_dir}/gift", :key => ''id'', :auto_flush => true)

text search engine ?
Hi there, What are you using for text search engine in your rails applications ? I have been using simple search for simple applications, but then I need to search text in model instances inside collections such as user.documents and the like. I believe that simple search does not support any sort of ranged queries, and sql like might be overkill for tables with lots of records. Bests, Sergi

more specific queries via IndexReader
We would like to show a list of "most recently added terms", meaning, the results of this query: Resource.aaf_index.ferret_index.reader.terms(:summary) BUT, only returning terms from a certain set of documents (in our case, we are going to filter by creation data). Is this possible? Thanks, John

The ferret logs
Hi. We''ve had some problems with ferret not being able to load our classes (stack trace below for the curious). I nailed it down to a deployment issue, where an old instance of ferret drb was running. I don''t understand the details quite yet, but the result was the the old ferret was never shutdown during redeployment, and attempts were made to start up a new one. Anywho,

Range searches some times they work, some times not...
Hi i''m using ferret to enable geographical postcode. I take a postcode and distance in miles from the user, strip off the outcode and then retrieve the associated x y coordinates in metres from the db. Then i get two temp x''s and y''s and search for all results that are within the box, see code below. Problems start to occur when i search on big distances so for

using highlight from aaf
Hi, I''m trying to use highlight ferret method with trunk aaf and 0.10.1 ferret. In my search display I use: Myindexedclass.ferret_index.searcher.highlight(@query, result_line.id, :content) * searcher is a protected method; how can I access to the searcher from aaf ? * is the doc id in aaf the same as my model id ? * is the first param, query, the string query or the query object ?

cFerret nearing completion
Hey folks, Some good news. I''ve finished cFerret and it''s ruby bindings to the point where I can run all of the unit tests. I still have to work out how I''m going to package and release it but it shouldn''t be long now. If you can''t wait you might like to try it from the subversion repository. It''ll probably only work on linux at the moment and

API towards cFerret
Hello list, I know this is a little OT but I wonder how I would go about using cFerret directly through C/C++ for indexing. Right now I do index = Index::Index.new(:path => ''/path/to/index'') index << {:title => "Programming Ruby", :content => "blah blah blah"} How would I do this in C/C++ against cFerret? Thanks! //Henrik

Erratic behavior with ferret 0.95 and acts_as_ferret
I am getting this issue also... Does anyone know what this is? When will Acts as Ferret be available for v10? Thanks for your help in desperation! How to install Ferret to get the best performance
Hey all, After dabbling with ActiveSearch, we''re coming back around to take another look at Ferret. ActiveSearch slowed to a crawl after indexing about 20k documents, each 20 lines each. This time we may attempt to create multiple Ferret indexes (isolating each organization''s data individually), since we eventually could have upwards of 20k documents for some

Is there any working way to search multiple indexes?
I''m running from the trunk, and hitting road blocks no matter which way I attempt to search across multiple indexes. I tried a MultiSearcher, but I can''t pass a string for the search query ms.search "iraq" TypeError: wrong argument type String (expected Data) So I tried creating a QueryParser to pass, but I can''t get the fields from the reader

Query with special characters crashes under Windows XP
Hi, Index queries with special characters (e.g. German Umlauts but also other European ones) make the Ruby process run for quite a long time and crash finally. I''m using Rails on Windows XP with Ferret 0.11.4_mswin_32. I could isolate the problem in the following simple controller action (so there''s no web browser form field involved): def test index = Ferret::I.new index

cFerret ETA?
I''m noticing some long delays when optimizing my index. I know this is terribly inefficient, but in order to make sure that my ActiveRecord model is in sync with my index, I''m optimizing after every new record that I store, like so: class Resume < ActiveRecord::Base include Ferret has_and_belongs_to_many :users SEARCH_INDEX = File.dirname(__FILE__) +
