installing the Simple package
I'm using Verzani's "Using R for Introductory Statistics" to teach a Research Methods in Psych course, and it recommends simple.median.test() for sign tests, which is in the Simple package--but nowhere I can find has ever heard of the Simple package! Anybody ever heard of this function or this package? cheers, Krysta ---------------------------- Krysta Chauncey, Ph.D.

breaking multi-modal histograms down into combinations of unimodal distributions
Dear All, Does anybody know if there is a functionality in R to break histograms that show a clear bi-modal (or multi-modal) distribution into a series of unimodal histograms that added up result in the original histogram? I was thinking of using QQ-plots (for which tools are available in R), and then observing the number of times the observed quantiles cross the 1:1 line, but this only gives an

Using eval in multinom argument
Hi, I am having difficulty entering a 'programmable' argument into the multinom function from the nnet package. Interactively, I can get the function to work fine by calling it this way: z1=multinom(formula = class.ind(grp[-outgroup])~ (PC1 + PC2 + PC3), data=data.frame(scores)) However I need to be able to change the number of variables I am looking for in 'scores' and so am

User accounts being blocked
James, I configured the account lockout policies by RSAT, GPEDIT.MSC. By GPEDIT.MSC I set the value = 10 attempts. Through the samba-tool, I used this command: # samba-tool domain passwordsettings set --account-lockout-threshold=11 INFO: Current debug levels: ... pm_process() returned Yes Module 'tombstone_reanimate' is disabled. plot.lm mislabels points with na.exclude (PR#3750)
R 1.7.1 on Windows XP The "normal Q-Q plot" produced by plot.lm() mislabels points when the model is fitted using na.action=na.exclude. Example: x <- 1:50 y <- x + rnorm(50) y[c(5,10,15)] <- NA # insert some NA's y[40] <- 50 # add an outlier plot(lm(y ~ x, na.action=na.omit)) # outlier correctly labeled in all # four plots

simpleR or usingR package by Verzani
I am a new R user and so I thought I could start with "Using R for Introductory statistics" by Verzani. In order to use some of the functions and datasets I have to install the simpleR package which is is now inside the UsingR package. I did so using >install.packages("UsingR"). However, the functions such as "simple.freqpoly.R" do not work. I also tried to

Bug in glm.fit() or plot.lm() (PR#778)
Here's a bug one of my students noticed. When you call plot() on a glm object, plot.lm gets called. The second plot it shows is supposed to give a normal QQ plot of the standard deviance residuals, but it doesn't. The glm object created by glm.fit returns something (the IRLS weights?) in fit$weights which plot.lm takes as observation weights, so you get strange residuals in the QQ

SimpleR and UsingR
Having found the online version of SimpleR, I wanted to to download the respective data: "The data sets for these notes are available from the CSI math department (http://www.math.csi.cuny.edu/Statistics/R/simpleR) and must be installed prior to this." There it says: "The simpleR package is now inside the UsingR package available from CRAN. In the Windows GUI, this may be

User accounts being blocked
Dear James, Thanks for the input. Even increasing from 5 to 10, the amount of times to miss the password and lock the account (after changing, I wheeled a gpupdate / force), if you miss 3 times the account is locked. I changed smb.conf log level to 9. I tried to unlock the account using the samba-tool command line, but without success, because I can only unlock using the RSAT. I get these

Cisco 7905 can't register
My Cisco 7905 can't register with Asterisk (1.0.7-BRIstuffed-0.2.0-RC7k on Debian stable). It could, however, register with another installation of Asterisk and the settings on the phone (apart from the SIP proxy address) haven't changed since then. On the new Asterisk box my sip.conf contains this: [jeremy] type=friend regexten=801 allow=g729 host=dynamic secret=PASSWORD nat=yes

should `data` respect default.stringsAsFactors()?

How do you expand memory capability (Was: R crashes in Windows ME)
Hello- Since my data bank in SPSS has > 40 variables, I think that R crashes because of the memory limit. In Maindonald?s UsingR text, on pg 3, there?s a footnote that reads: "If you want larger memory space than the default you may want a target akin to <path to binary>\rw091\bin\rgui.exe --visize 30M --nsize 1000K [The default is --vsize 6M --nsize 250K

[PATCH] VTD/Intremap: Disable Intremap on Chipset 5500/5520/X58 due to errata
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/5520-and-5500-chipset-ioh-specification-update.html Stepping B-3 has two errata (#47 and #53) related to Interrupt remapping, to which the workaround is for the BIOS to completely disable interrupt remapping. These errata are fixed in stepping C-2. Unfortunately this chipset is very common and many BIOSes are not disabling remapping. We can
