Using as.polynomial() over a matrix
Hello All
First - a warning. I'm not very R or programming savvy.
I am trying to do something without much luck, and have scoured help-pages, but nothing has come up. Here it is:
I have a matrix (m) of approx 40,000 rows and 3 columns, filled with numbers.
I would like to convert the contents of this matrix into another matrix (m_p), where the numbers of (m) have been coerced into a

absurd computiation times of lme
Hi,
i've been trying to apply the lme apprach to growth curves
of children, but lme keeps running for ever and ever as

First Example:
Data are 39 boys from the Berkeley growth study, each one
measured 31 times at the ages of

Can't mount /home anymore
Hi!
I'm new to the list. I have a problem with mounting my home directory since
my PC crashed. I hope that I can get some help on this list as I don't know
much of ext3 myself.
The mount command for my /home gives me the following output:
# mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/tmp/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda6,
missing codepage or other error

chisq.test vs manual calculation - why are different results produced?
Hello,
I am trying to fit gamma, negative exponential and inverse power functions
to a dataset, and then test whether the fit of each curve is good. To do
this I have been advised to calculate predicted values for bins of data (I
have grouped a continuous range of distances into 1km bins), and then apply
a chi-squared test. Example:
> data <- data.frame(distance=c(1,2,3,4,5,6,7),

Factor Analysis Biplot
Dear R help
I am having difficulty doing a biplot of the first two factors of a factor
analysis. I presume it is because the values in factor 2 for Milk and NUTS
are not displayed in the component loadings.
Loadings:
Factor1 Factor2
RedMeat 0.561 -0.112
WhiteMeat 0.593 -0.432
Eggs 0.839 -0.195
Milk 0.679

How to build phylogenetic tree by R program from distance any distance matrix
Hello R users,
Can any one please help me to find a way to build phylogenetic tree by R
program from any distance matrix.
Suppose I have a data like :

Patch - bug fix for RedCloth when using !image! and :filter_html in combination
RedCloth.new("!image!", [:filter_html]).to_html will cause the following
error:

This patch will fix it. Can you apply this please to next release of
RedCloth?
Thanks!

QoS IP precedence and Diffserv combination
All:
I am tasked with creating an environment in which DiffServ and IP
precedence is handled as close to RFC specification as possible. I have
a few problems with implementing this based on current queueing
structure. Here are a few of my questions.
1.) Is there any way to get DiffServ AF drop levels without using
DSMARK and GRED?
Ex.
AF11 Gred DP 1
AF12 Gred DP 2
AF13 Gred DP 3
2.)

Two internet connections in combination with DNAT
Hi all,
I hope someone here can help me with the following problem:
we have a router/firewall machine which connects our local network to the
internet. As there are also some servers in the local network working as
mail- and webservers, we are using DNAT to make this machines reachable from
the internet.
The firewall-machine is connected to the internet with two connections, one

[PATCH] do not use beforeStart, afterFinish, beforeUpdate, and afterUpdate internally in combination effects
Hello,
my patch separates usage of the callback between the user, combination
effects, and the core effects.
Consider these use cases.
a) user - core effects
b) user - combination effects - core effects
For a), the existing callbacks can be used by the user
For b), the existing callbacks are partly used by the combination
effects as a communication channel to the core effects, therefore they

Has anybody tried puppet in combination with NSIS installers?
Hi all!
Just wondering if anyone has successfully used puppet in combination
with NSIS installers (afaik only msi support is available at the
moment - i''m not yet familiar with puppet''s capabilities under windows
systems).
Thank you very much in advance,

Using R in combination with GRASS for image classification
Hello everybody!
For my academic project work I intend to use only open-source software. My
objective is to carry out classification of satellite digital images using
Geostatistics. I found out GRASS is a good software for image processing.
Also a good geostatistics software is R. It is also known that R can be used
in combination with GRASS. But I am not able to confirm that satellite

sudo / --link-dest combination problem.
Hi, using the attached script to implement an incremental rotating
backup of my home directory
works fine if I run it myself, however if it is run as root the --
link-dest fails and all files are
recreated rather than linked to. Can someone explain the problem to me?
I'm using rsync version 2.6.5
on
Darwin Kernel Version 8.1.0 (OS X Tiger)
Thanks,
Simon.

Variance of a non-linear combination of the coefficient estiamtes
Hi,
I would like to know if anyone knows how to compute a variance of the
non-linear combination of the coefficient estimates.
Say, I get a model of
y~c+ax+bz (1)
where x and z are the independent variables, c is the constant estimate, and a
and b are the coefficient estimates.
Then, I want to know the variance of
b*c/a (2).
How am I going to get it?
In Stata, I can just use

can a combination of samba 4 tp4 server set as AD controiller with a samba 3.x BDC(slave) emulate a MS AD infrastructure ' well enough' right now?
Looking at the warnings about not running samba 4 (tp3) in a working
environment, because of the missing file printing features make me
wonder if one could get away with only using the AD controller features
of samba 4 for now and have a samba 3.x DC, that has joined the samba 4
controlled Active Directory domain, handle the file and print sharing.
How much of an issue would the missing samba4

Fwd: logistic regression with combination to distributed lag
Hello all,
I am facing difficulty in deciding how to go about analysis of a situation
explained as follows:
I have two variables Y (response) and X (explanatory)
(There are several other potential candidate explanatory variables, but
right now I am looking at only one variable.)
Y is binary taking values 1 and 0.
X is a continuous variable.
Both variables are observed over a equally spaced

Slow download speed with windows/linux combination.
Hiya,
I am having a weird problem. I hope someone here
can help me with it.
My setup is as follows:
internet --- cablemodem --- linux firewall --- linux box (with vmware)
I always used to have a download speed of 150 kb/s, until
at one moment I got a new cable modem from my ISP (connected
to a different platform), from that moment on I suddenly got
a download speed of around 10 kb/s. After a
