Making a map in R?
Does anyone know of a package to make a map from GIS data, and/or would it be easier in one of the free GIS programs. I would like to make a map of the savannah river area with our sampling locations. thanks stephen -- Let's not spend our time and resources thinking about things that are so little or so large that all they really do for us is puff us up and make us feel like gods. R helps win competitions

Plotmath: suprscript on scalable delimiter?
ComRades, How do you put a superscript on a scalable delimiter? I want to put 'b' as the power of the expression in the following plot: t <- 1:25 K <- 0.2 y <- ((1-exp(-K*t))/(1-exp(-K*t)*exp(K)))^3 plot(t,y,"l",main="K=0.2, b=3") text(15,5,expression(bgroup("(",frac(1-e^-Kt,1-e^-Kt*e^K),")"))) Plotmath examples in demo(plotmath) do not

Problem with package installation
Dear ComRades, I am having the "wrong MD5 checksums" error with every package I try to install. It happened with R 2.11.0, then I updated to R 2.11.1, same thing. sessionInfo() R version 2.11.1 (2010-05-31) i386-pc-mingw32 locale: [1] LC_COLLATE=Spanish_Spain.1252 LC_CTYPE=Spanish_Spain.1252 LC_MONETARY=Spanish_Spain.1252 [4] LC_NUMERIC=C

AIC() vs. mle.aic() vs. step()?
I know this a newbie question, but I've only just started using AIC for model comparison and after a bunch of different keyword searches I've failed to find a page laying out what the differences are between the AIC scores assigned by AIC() and mle.aic() using default settings. I started by using mle.aic() to find the best submodels, but then I wanted to also be able to make comparisons

Fast Two-Dimensional Optimization
Dear R Helpers, I have attempted "optim" function to solve a two-dimensional optimization problem. It took around 25 second to complete the procedure. However, I want to reduce the computation time: less than 7 second. Is there any optimization function in R which is very rapid? Building Custom GUIs for R
I am looking to build simple GUIs based on the R codes I have. The main objective is to hide the scary R codes from non-programming people and make it easier for them to try out different inputs. For example, 1. The GUI will have means to upload a csv file which will be read by the R code. 2. A button to preprocess data (carried out by a R function behind) 3. A button to build some models

How to make a table of a desired dimension
Hi ComRades, I want to make a matrix of frequencies from vectors of a continuous variable spanning different values. For example this code x<-c(runif(100,10,40),runif(100,43,55)) y<-c(runif(100,7,35),runif(100,37,50)) z<-c(runif(100,10,42),runif(100,45,52)) a<-table(ceiling(x)) b<-table(ceiling(y)) c<-table(ceiling(z)) a b c will give me three tables that start and end at

PBSmapping, where is Ireland?!
Hi folks, I've been using 'PBSmapping' to make a map of Europe with some labels. I've been using the 'worldLL' PolyData, as my computer is too slow to make my own from the GSHHS files. The only problem is this PolyData does not seem to include Ireland. I have no idea why this should be so, other European islands such as Sardinia etc. are included.

Truncated Normal Distribution and Truncated Pareto distribution
Dear R helpers, I have a bimodal dataset dealing with loss amounts. I have divided this dataset into two with the bounds for the first dataset i.e. dataset-A being 5,000$ to 100,000$ and the dataset-B deals with the losses exceeding 100,000$ i.e. dataset-B is left truncated. I need to fit truncated normal disribution to dataset - I having lower bound of 5000 and upper bound of 100,000. While I

adding year information to a scatter plot
Hi R users, I would like to add year information to each point in a scatter plot. The following example shows what i mean: df=data.frame(year=c(2001,2002,2003),a=c(8,9,7),b=c(100,90,95)) df plot(b~a,data=df) Now, I would like to see which point belongs to 2001, 2002 and 2003 in the above graphic. Thank you very much, ozan [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

export test results to csv
Hi everybody! I would like to export the results of a test statistic in a *.csv file, but get an error. The code is below. The data are attached as .txt with tab as separator. I tried to get a sample dataset, but for some reason it didn't work, so please excuse the length of the file. I also attached a txt with the output (copy/paste) in case that helps. ---- > library(WRS) >
