sequencially merge multiple files in a folder
Dear all, If the question is too easy, please forgive me since I am only few weeks old in R. I have worked on this question a few days and still cannot figure it out. Here I have a folder with more than 50 tab-delimited files. Each file has a few hundreds of thousands rows/subjects, and the number of columns/variables of each file varies. The 1st row consists of all the variable names. Now I

newbie graphics question: Two density plots in same frame ?
I swear I've scoured the help files and several texts before posting what feels like a dumb newbie question. How can I draw two kernel density plots in the same frame ? I have similar variables in two separate data frames, and I would like to show their two histograms/densities in a single picture. Same units, scale, range for both, so I'm simply trying to draw one and then add the

Missing data and LME models and diagnostic plots
Hello Running R2.9.2 on Windows XP I am puzzled by the performance of LME in situations where there are missing data. As I understand it, one of the strengths of this sort of model is how well it deals with missing data, yet lme requires nonmissing data. Thus, m1.mod1 <- lme(fixed = math_1 ~ I(year-2007.5)*TFC_, data = long, random =

About princomp
Hi, I run the example for princomp for R211 I got the following error for biplot > ## The variances of the variables in the > ## USArrests data vary by orders of magnitude, so scaling is appropriate > (pc.cr <http://pc.cr> <- princomp(USArrests)) # inappropriate Erreur dans cov.wt(z) : 'x' must contain finite values only > princomp(USArrests, cor = TRUE) # =^=

hypothesis testing in models
Dear all, Being an economics student, I am trying to put together a little tutorial/FAQ/... for those who have (more) background in econometrics rather than in statistics -- just as I have. I'v been looking for a hypothesis testing tool in R (just linear or also nonlinear) for model parameters, but could not find anything so far. I did find a similar but unanswered question in the archives,

PCA
Hello, I am trying to complete a PCA on a set of standardized ring widths from 8 different sites (T10, T9, T8, T7, T6, T5, T3, and T2). The following is a small portion of my data: T10 T9 T8 T7 T6 T5 T3 T2 1.33738 0.92669 0.91146 0.98922 0.9308 0.88201 0.92287 0.91775 0.82181 1.05319 0.92908 0.97971 0.95165 0.98029 1.14048 0.77803 0.88294 0.96413 0.90893 0.87957 0.9961 0.74926 0.71394 0.70877

function in order to plot the same graph to postscript and pdf
Hi, I've written a function in order to plot the same graph in a postcript and in a pdf file. Unfortunately, the second graph is always empty, i.e.: plot.both <- function{myplot, filename}{ pdf(file=paste(filename, ".pdf", sep="")) myplot dev.off() postscript(file=paste(filename, ".eps", sep="")) myplot dev.off() } yields in a

biplot package
Dears, I've been learning biplot (Gabriel, 1971) and I found the function 'biplot', inside of the package 'stats', useful but, a bit limited. So, I'm thinking to start a colaborative package to enhance this methods to other multivariate methods. In this way, I would like to start it, making public a new function (biplot.pca, still in development, but running) that make

Modifying a built-in R function
Hello, Something incredible (at least for me) has happen. Yesterday night I downloaded biplot.R to edit this function and add new features I wished. Namely I wanted to plot points belonging to different groups using different colors and symbols. I identified which part of the original code I had to modify. Then, I rename biplot by biplotes and executing biplotes(x), being x a princomp class

help with formula and data= argument
Sorry for posting this twice, but I still have not solved this problem and am hoping for some assistance. I am attempting to write a function that is flexible enough to respond to the user providing a formula (with a data= argument) or not (similar to plot(x,y) versus plot(y~x,data=data)). I have found a method to work with this in a simple case but am having trouble determining how to

gridBase and new.page() / grid.newpage()
Hello all, I'm trying to write a function using the gridBase package. I'd like to push several base subplots to a larger plot constructed with grid. However, I'm having trouble getting consistent results when running the function when the plotting window (quartz) is closed, when it is left open and the plot function is repeated to the same window, and when the output is saved to a

"biplot" graphical options?
Dear R-help fellows good afternoon. I am struggling in the attempt to impose some graphical conditions (changing point symbols, colors, etc) to biplot function (I am using it to visualize the results of princomp) but I can't apparently manage to change anything but the axis... and I have been browsing manuals and vignettes without finding any explicit suggestions on how to operate... Can

How does biplot.princomp scale its axes?
I'm attempting to modify how biplot draws its red vectors (among other things). This is how I've started: Biplot <- function(xx, comps = c(1, 2), cex = c(.6, .4)) { ## Purpose: Makes a biplot with princomp() object to not show arrows ## ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ## Arguments: xx is an object made using princomp() ##

Reading biplot function's source code
Hi everybody, Excuse me for this silly question, but after searching the help archives I'm still unable to find my way to read the source code of the "biplot" function in R. I have installed the mvbutils package, and tried: > fixr(biplot) which only gives me: function (x, ...) UseMethod("biplot") with no further details.... I'd like to read the code to see if

Symbols in biplot
Hello all, I just started in on R today. I am at the point where I am trying to distinguish different groups of data (hydrochemical data) in biplot. I search and found a post about converting the sample number in biplot to a symbol like x or + "> temp <- matrix(runif(50), nrow=10) > temp.pca <- princomp(temp) > biplot(temp.pca, xlabs=c("A", "A",

biplot breakdown help
Hi, I am trying to understand how the biplot.prcomp is constructed so I can manipulate it to emphasise particular observations and reduce the number of variables shown. The prcomp model I have ran has cor=TRUE and scale=TRUE I have worked out from looking at str(prcomp.model) that... prcomp.model$x = the observations ploted in the biplot prcomp.model$rotation = the variables that form the
