I am having a problem in doing something similar to this example:
Suppose I have this vector a, and from it I wish to create 5 other vector
each one with less one value than what object a has
So I have "a"
a<-c(1,2,3,4,5)
and I want

configure a rails app for multiple databases
Hello Rails community
I cannot seem to find via Google what I had hoped would be
a simple issue
On a single DB system (currently, postgres 8.1.4),
I have two databases, each containing multiple tables.
I would like to configure my app and database.yml to recognize
these two databases.
What is the corrrect config for the database.yml ?
Is it something like:

Chow test(1960)/Structural change test
Hi,
A question on something which normally should be easy !
I perform a linear regression using lm function:
> reg1 <- lm (a b+c+d, data = database1)
Then I try to perform the Chow (1960) test (structural change test) on my regression. I know the breakpoint date. I try the following code like it is described in the “Examples” section of the “strucchange” package :

overlapping docids when searching on multiple databases?
Just a quick question - it seems to me that it's entirely possible to
get overlapping docids when searching on multiple databases? For
instance:
open database1
add database2 to database1
search db1+db2
if docid 10 exists in both databases, is there any way of telling which
which database to retrieve the document from?

Competing with SPSS and SAS: improving code that loops through rows (data manipulation)
Dear R-ers,
In my question there are no statistics involved - it's all about data
manipulation in R.
I am trying to write a code that should replace what's currently being
done in SAS and SPSS. Or, at least, I am trying to show to my
colleagues R is not much worse than SAS/SPSS for the task at hand.
I've written a code that works but it's too slow. Probably because

superposing barplots having different scales
Hello. I know how to make a bar plot in which a numeric y variable is
plotted against some grouping variable X (say, groups A, B, C) when this
grouping variable is subdivided into each of two subgroups; so the bars
would be: (group A subgroup 1) beside (group A subgroup 2), then (group B
subgroup 1) beside (group B subgroup 2), and so on. This is done using the
beside=TRUE argument in the

perform subgroup meta-analysis and create forest plot displaying subgroups
Hello,
I'm using the rmeta package to perform a meta analysis using summary statistics rather than raw data, and would like to analyze the effects in three different subgroups of my data. Furthermore, I'd like to plot this on one forest plot, with corresponding summary weighted averages of the effects displayed beneath each subgroup.
I am able to generate the subgroup analyses by simply

How to filter an activerecord find_all...
I have a nice hierarchical table structure like this:
divisions
has_many groups
groups
belongs_to division
has_many subgroups
subgroups
belongs_to group
has_many units
units
belongs_to subgroup
I have a report which is based on units, but i want to be able to filter
the units by which subgroup, or which group, or which division. I also
want to sort them by division.name, then group.name,

programming: telling a function where to look for the entered variables
Hi there,
Could someone help me with the following programming problem..?
I have written a function that works for my intended purpose, but it
is quite closely tied to a particular dataframe and the names of the
variables in this dataframe. However, I'd like to use the same
function for different dataframes and variables. My problem is that
I'm not quite sure how to tell my function in

R 2.9.0 devel: package installation with configure-args option
Hi,
trying

R CMD INSTALL --configure-args="--with-opt1 --with-opt2" packname

Collapsing a factor in R
I'm trying to collapse the following table along the sub-group factor. In
this case, collapsing means taking the average ages within a subgroup and
creating a new table. I seem to be running into trouble trying to create
this new data frame. I can use the ave() function to find averages within a
subgroup but how do I maintain the Group/Gender factors after collapsing?

Avoid return code 24 (file vanished) with command line option?
Hi!
Is it possible to avoid this error condition by specifying a command
line option? I haven't found an obvious one in the manual.
Background: We are using rsync for a live backup of our home
directories. Emails are stored in Maildir format within the
homedirectories. The rsync process is running for some time and in the
meantime emails get deleted because users still have IMAP access.

Metadata additions
With this mail I would like to make a proposal to add additional informations
to the core and plugin metadata files. Currently these tags are already
handled in the ccs configuration system. Ccs automatically adds this
informations to the core/plugin option set, but I think that it would make
more sense to add this to the official files, to allow similar features in
other configuration

define subgroups based on position in table
Dear list,
I have a data frame with one column (group) and want to add a second column (sub) with a serial number that says to which subgroup a cell belongs. A subgroup contains the consecutive rows of the same group. The number of a subgroup is based on its position in the table. The first subgroup of A's and B's should have nr A1 and B1, the second nr A2 and B2, etc.. I hope the

RUnit bug?
There appears to be a bug in RUnit.
Given a testsuite testsuite.math, say, when I run:
runTestSuite(testsuite.math)
this works fine, provided there are no extraneous files in the
unit test subdirectory.
But if there are any Emacs temp files (with names that
end with '~') then runTestSuite gets confused and tries to
run functions from the temp files as well.
