bigglm() results different from glm()
Dear all, I am using the bigglm package to fit a few GLM's to a large dataset (3 million rows, 6 columns). While trying to fit a Poisson GLM I noticed that the coefficient estimates were very different from what I obtained when estimating the model on a smaller dataset using glm(), I wrote a very basic toy example to compare the results of bigglm() against a glm() call. Consider the

Surface for R outside of R
Hi all, i am new here and this is my first posting. My coding experience in R ist okay, but I have a problem which is related to another aspect of R. I am searching for a surface which execute my commands in R via a click on a button OUTSIDE of R. Concrete: I will write some programs in R and want to execute this files outside of R, so I don't want to start R eyery time if i want an

bigglm() results different from glm()
Hi Sir, Thanks for making package available to us. I am facing few problems if you can give some hints: Problem-1: The model summary and residual deviance matched (in the mail below) but I didn't understand why AIC is still different. > AIC(m1) [1] 532965 > AIC(m1big_longer) [1] 101442.9 Problem-2: chunksize argument is there in bigglm but not in biglm, consequently,

split a character variable into several character variable by a character
Dear Mao Jianfeng, "r-help-owner" is not the place for help, but: r-help at r-project.org (CC-ed here) In any case, strsplit() does the job, i.e.: > unlist(strsplit("BCPy01-01", "-")) [1] "BCPy01" "01" You can work with the whole variable, like: splitpop <- strsplit(df1$popcode, "-") then access the first part with >

MLE in R
Hi, dear R users I am a newbie in R and I need to use the method of meximum likelihood to fit a Weibull distribution to my survival data. I use "optim" as follows: optim(c(1.14,0.25),weibull.like,mydata=mydata,method="L-BFGS-B",hessian = TRUE) My question is: how do I setup the constraints that the two parametrs of Weibull to be pisotive? Many thanks! Any comments are

read.table: aborting based on a time constraint
Hello ? I am trying to write code that will read in multiple datasets; however, I would like to skip any dataset where the read-in process takes longer than some fixed cutoff. A generic version of the function is the following: for(k in 1:number.of.datasets) { X[k]=read.table(?) } The issue is that I cannot find a way to embed logic that will abort the read-in process of a specific dataset

NOT FOUND error
I''ve been hunting the web and reading the mailing lists all day but I''m not finding any guidance on this problem. When I try to talk to my mongrel it simply responds with NOT FOUND and nothing else. I can''t find anything on google because this has to be the second most commond phrase in existence. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Chuck Vose

Potential minor GUI bug
Is this an interface bug? Using RGUI for windows I run into a "Not Responding" process (I "smartly" coded an infinite loop, yaiks!), I hit esc and the interpreter was stopped and I recovered the console functionality but the caption on the R icon in my windows taskbar (the individual icon shown for every software currently running in the session) was not updated so the

Navigation techniques, everyone?
I''m rewriting the code to my first app. I want to reuse a lot of it, but tidy it up a lot. The first thing I will tackle is my nav-bar. Throughout a user''s experience on my app, I want it to reload as little as possible (I''ll have about 7 or 8 controllers with about 70 actions). So, I''ve thought of a few ways of doing it, and was wondering if you guys

Problem with gettext and functional tests
Hi, I am using gettext to let my web application know several languages. All works fine, but since I integrated it, my functional tests don''t work any more. I keep getting the error message: NoMethodError: undefined method `cgi'' for #<ActionController::TestRequest:0xb77f7f88>. All right, TestRequest doesn''t have a cgi method. Therefore I just included this into

Where to put code - controller or model
I have a Rails app that is a directory indexer. It passes the desired directory path in the url. There is a user table, and a permissions table (which contains the volumes each user has permission to see). There is also a volume table, which contains the available volumes, and a path table, which contains the paths to every file available on the machine. [There are other tables, but these

Saving boolean attributes
Hi, I''m just learning Ruby on Rails and ran into something where I know I''m either doing something very stupid or I''m missing something. My model as a boolean attribute called active_flag. In my Sql Server database this is stored as a bit value. I then setup a method in my controller called "deactivate". This is very simple, it does: def deactivate

self organizing map advice for categorical data
Hello, Could anybody offer any advice about implementing a Kohonen self organizing map for categorical data? Specifically I am wondering if there are any pre-existent packages that can deal with categorical data and/or how one would compare the input vector of categoricals with the self organizing map nodes. Thanks in advance. George Chen ----- Original Message ----- From: r-help-request at

Functional Tests misbehaving with Globalize
Howdy all Apologies to the folks subscribed to the globalize list for dual posting this message... I''ve got a project running globalize and rails 1.1.4, and I''ve only recently adopted a strong love for testing. Now my models are 100% tested (I must note that I do not make use of any translations in the database yet), and I''ve now started with functional tests before

Accessing form field contents
I have an HTML form on the screen, that is connected to a database (standard Ruby way). I found that there are people that would rather not fill in this information, but would rather search Amazon for the info. Therefore, I added a link to the right of one of the fields that, when pressed, will search Amazon for what ever you typed into that field. So, how can I do that? At first I tried

workweek_select
I''m having difficulty figuring out the ruby neccessary to do this so I thought I would try the list. I''m hoping to get a date_select to only display certain days (specifically only fridays) but rails doesn''t seem to have the flexibility so I''ve been going at it in ruby to no avail. I''ve looked on google but couldn''t find it (because it
