R (2.9.0 rc) CMD INSTALL will leave OOLOCK folder even if installation succeeded
Hi, since a couple of days ago I see failures when using R CMD INSTALL -l lib path-to-src/pkg.tar.gz This occurs in automated library updating via a shell script and is caused by the immediate preceding call to leave an 00LOCK folder even though the package installation of that call succeeded. This occurs at random (no obvious/systematic correlation to package name or or such) and only for

Doing a Task Without Using a For Loop
Assume that I have the dataframe "data1", which is listed at the end of this message. I want count the number of lines that each person has for each year. For example, the person with ID=213 has 15 entries (NinYear) for 1953. The following bit of code calculates NinYear: for (i in 1:length(data1$ID)) { data1$NinYear[i] <- length(data1[data1$Year==data1$Year[i] &

lm.boot function gives error
When I run this calculation library(ISwR) library(simple.boot) data(thuesen) fit <- lm(thuesen$short.velocity~thuesen$blood.glucose) summary(fit) fit.sb <- lm.boot(fit,R=1000,rows=F) summary(fit.sb) I get the following error from the lm.boot routine: newdata' had 100 rows but variable(s) found have 24 rows I don't know what this error means. Also, this example is

In a SLR, Why Does the Hat Matrix Depend on the Weights?
I understand that the hat matrix is a function of the predictor variable alone. So, in the following example why do the values on the diagonal of the hat matrix change when I go from an unweighted fit to a weighted fit? Is the function hatvalues giving me something other than what I think it is? library(ISwR) data(thuesen) attach(thuesen) fit <- lm(short.velocity ~ blood.glucose)

Specifying relative position of text in a plot
What is the simplest way to specify the location of text in a scatter plot (created using the plot function) in relative terms rather than specific x-y coordinates? For example, rather than putting text at (300,49) on a plot, how do I put it 1/10 of the way over from the y axis and 1/2 of the way up from the x axis? Thanks. Tom -- View this message in context:

Full_Name: Stefan Raberger Version: 2.8.1 OS: Windows XP Submission from: (NULL) (213.185.163.242) Hi there, I recently noticed some strange behaviour of the command "type.convert", depending on the startup mode used. How do I Convert "<1" to the number 1?
Is there an elegant way in R to change a number reported as a less-than number in text format, "<1" for example, to the numeric equivalent 1? 'mean' is not reverted in median() as NEWS says (PR#13731)
Full_Name: Version: 2.9.0 OS: windows, linux Submission from: (NULL) (128.231.21.125) In NEWS, it says "median.default() was altered in 2.8.1 to use sum() rather than mean(), although it was still documented to use mean(). This caused problems for POSIXt objects, for which mean() but not sum() makes sense, so the change has been reverted." But it's not reverted yet.

effect sizes for Wilcoxon tests
Hello, I use t.test for normal distributed and wilcox.test for non-normal distributed samples. It is easy to write a function for t.test that calculates the effect size, because all parts of the formula are available from the t.test result: r = sqrt(t*t / (t*t + df)) However, for Wilcoxon tests, the formula for effect sizes is: r = Z / sqrt(N) I wonder how I can calculate the Z-score in R for

abline() or predict.lm() when log="x"

No --no-latex?
Hi, Having finally gotten around to installing R-2.9.0, I find that while the docs still say I can invoke the --no-latex option, R CMD INSTALL has decided that I can't. Nor is there any notice of this that I can find in the 2.9 series news. Is this just a trifling oversight that will be repaired? Jim
