Applying "toupper" to only portions of text strings
Colleagues Assume that I have a vector containing some text strings, some of which contain a particular character. I could like to apply "toupper" to the text before the character. For example (in this case, "|" is the particular character): ORIGINAL: TEXT <- c("aaaa", "bbb|cc", "|ddd") AFTER APPLICATION OF toupper: TEXT <-

search for string insider a string
Hi, sorry if it is a too stupid question, but how do I a string search in R: I have a dataframe A with A$test like: test1 bcdtestblabla2.1bla cdtestblablabla3.88blabla and I want to search for string that start with 'dtest' and ends with number and return the location of that substring and the number, so the end result would be: NA NA 3 2.1 2 3.88 I find grep can

data frame select max group by like function
Hi, I have a data frame with 3 columns: ID, year and score. How can I select for each unique ID, the year that has the max score? Regex question to find a string that contains 5-9 alpha-numeric characters, at least one of which is a number
Hi, This is not exactly an R question but I am trying to use gsub to replace a string that contains 5-9 alpha-numeric characters, at least one of which is a number. Is there a good way to write it in a one line regex? Thanks, Richard

Augment base::replace(x, list, value) to allow list= to be a predicate?
This could be extended to sub and gsub as well which gsubfn in the gusbfn package already does: library(gsubfn) gsubfn("^..", toupper, c("abc", "xyz")) ## [1] "ABc" "XYz" On Fri, Mar 3, 2023 at 7:22?PM Pavel Krivitsky <p.krivitsky at unsw.edu.au> wrote: > > Dear All, > > Currently, list= in base::replace(x, list, value)

Augment base::replace(x, list, value) to allow list= to be a predicate?
That's an interesting example, as it's conceptually similar to what Pavel is proposing, but structurally different. gsubfn() is more complicated than a simple switch in the body of the function, and wouldn't work well as an anonymous function. Multiple dispatch can nicely encompass both of these cases. For replace(), library(S7) replace <- new_generic("replace",

Cut intervals (character) to numeric midpoint; regex problem
Starting with the head of a 499 element matrix whose column names are now the labels trom a cut() operation, I needed to get to a vector of midpoints to serve as the basis for plotting a calibration curve ( exp(linear predictor) vs. : > dput(head(dimnames(mtcal)[2][[1]])) # was starting point testvec <- c("(-8.616,-3.084]", "(-3.084,-2.876]",

get top 50 correlated item from a correlation matrix for each item
Hi, I have a correlation matrix of about 3000 items, i.e., a 3000*3000 matrix. For each of the 3000 items, I want to get the top 50 items that have the highest correlation with it (excluding itself) and generate a data frame with 3 columns like ("ID", "ID2", "cor"), where ID is those 3000 items each repeat 50 times, and ID2 is the top 50 correlated items with ID,

Augment base::replace(x, list, value) to allow list= to be a predicate?
Dear All, Currently, list= in base::replace(x, list, value) has to be an index vector. For me, at least, the most common use case is for list= to be some simple property of elements of x, e.g., x <- c(1,2,NA,3) replace(x, is.na(x), 0) Particularly when using R pipes, which don't allow multiple substitutions, it would simplify many of such cases if list= could be a function that returns

regex help: splitting strings with no separator
Greetings, I have a vector of values that are a word followed by a number, e.g., x = c("Apple12","HP42","Dell91"). The goal is to split this vector into two vectors such that the first vector contains just the words and the second contains just the numbers. I cannot use strsplit (or at least I do not know how) as there is no obvious separator. I can use sub to

LME: internal workings of QR factorization
Hi: I've been reading "Computational Methods for Multilevel Modeling" by Pinheiro and Bates, the idea of embedding the technique in my own c-level code. The basic idea is to rewrite the joint density in a form to mimic a single least squares problem conditional upon the variance parameters. The paper is fairly clear except that some important level of detail is missing. For
