Assignment to string
The documentation for assignment says: In all the assignment operator expressions, 'x' can be a name or an expression defining a part of an object to be replaced (e.g., 'z[[1]]'). A syntactic name does not need to be quoted, though it can be (preferably by backticks). But the implementation allows assignment to a character string (i.e. not a name), which it

Wilcox test and data collection
Dear Contributors I have a problem with the collection of data from the results of a test. I need to perform a comparative test over groups of data , recall the value of the pvalue and create a table. My problem is in the way to replicate the analysis over and over again over subsets of data according to a condition. I have this database, called y: gg t1 t2 d 40 1 1

Confusion using "functions to access the function call stack" example section
I was going through the example below which is taken from the example section in the R documentation for accessing the function call stack. I am confused and I have 3 questions that I was hoping someone could answer. 1) why is y equal to zero even though the call was done with gg(3) 2) what does parents are 0,1,2,0,4,5,6,7 mean ? I understand what a parent frame is but how do the #'s relate

ggplot: adding layer using different data, groups and also controlling appearance
I have a more complicated function I am trying to write, but I run in to a problem when I want to add something to the plot from more than one data set while simultaneously controlling the appearance of the additional layer. # Toy data: foo <- data.frame ( x = 1:4, y = 4:1 , membership = c( "A", "A", "B", "B" ) ) bar <- data.frame ( x = 1:4 + 1 , y

Problems with userPassword when it's base64 encoded
I'm switching from OpenLDAP to the newly released Fedora Directory Server (formely known as the Netscape Directory Server) as a LDAP backend for my Samba domain. I'm now faced with a problem regarding how Fedora DS handles the userPassword field. Unlike OpenLDAP it encodes it in base64 so instead of reading userPassword: {SSHA}0lP+r3Z1NVan7Caf4CG9oSgnTbQRrv/p it reads: userPassword::

Recoding variables based on reference values in data frame
I'm new to R (previously used SAS primarily) and I have a genetics data frame consisting of genotypes for each of 300+ subjects (ID1, ID2, ID3, ...) at 3000+ genetic locations (SNP1, SNP2, SNP3...). A small subset of the data is shown below: SNP_ID SNP1 SNP2 SNP3 SNP4 Maj_Allele C G C A Min_Allele T A T G ID1 CC GG CT AA ID2 CC GG CC AA ID3 CC GG nc AA

Competing Risks Regression with qualitative predictor with more than 2 categories
Hello, I have a question regarding competing risk regression using cmprsk package (function crr()). I am using R2.9.1. How can I do to assess the effect of qualitative predictor (gg) with more than two categories (a,b,c) categorie c is the reference category. See above results, gg is considered like a ordered predictor ! Thank you for your help Jan > # simulated data to test > set.seed(10)

grid.cap() requires more time?
Dear all, I am puzzled by the following behavior of the new grid.cap() function, which appears to run out of time when capturing the output of a graphic. It works fine if I introduce a Sys.sleep(1) before executing more code, library(grid) quartz() grid.circle(gp=gpar(fill="black")) gg <- grid.cap() dev.new() grid.raster(gg) ## completely blank gg[gg!="white"] ## indeed

Consistant test for NAs in a factor when exclude = NULL?
Dear folks? Is there a function to correctly find (and count) the NAs in a factor when exclude=NULL, regardless of whether their origin is in the original data or by subsequent assignment? In example number 1 below, where NAs are assigned by is.na()<-, testing the factor with is.na() finds the correct number of NAs. In example number 2, where the NAs are from the data, neither is.na(), ==NA,
