Clarification for options(OutDec)
The documentation for the OutDec option says that it should be a
'one-character string'; yet, if I try a unicode character, it doesn't seem
to work. Are unicode chars not counted as one-character?
This is within the mac GUI, but I also see this on linux boxes.

Thanks for the report. The approach you outlines below should work --
I'll look into it.

bug with OutDec option and deferred_string altrep object
While implementing R's new 'altrep' functionality in the TERR engine,
I discovered a bug in R's 'deferred_string' altrep object: it is not
using the correct value of the 'OutDec' option when it expands a
deferred_string. See the following example:
R 3.5.1: (same results in R 3.6.0 devel engine built 10/5)

Bug in legend?
This is a bit obscure but caused me some grief... R1.5.1/MS
Windows
There seems to be a peculiarity in legend associated with the use
of expression text. It seems as if expression text is used in (eg) an
mtext call then if the call to legend also includes expression text
and a subscript then the legend box and line spacing depends on
the value of cex used in the previous call to mtext,

Remove all box around a plot except bottom line (base graphics)
That's pretty similar to call axis function, i.e.
?plot(rnorm(100), yaxt="n", bty="n")
?usr <- par("usr")
?## lines(usr[c(1,2)], usr[c(3,3)], xpd = TRUE)
?axis(1, ...) # where 1 is bottom, 2 left, 3 top, and 4 right sides of
the plot box)

as.numeric and as.character with locale using comma as separator
Dear all,
summary:
My LC_NUMERIC is changed from C to de_DE by library (qtbase).
[which shouldn't happen according to the warning when setting it back
manually].
I posted an issue at their github repository, but maybe the behaviour is
a bit more of general interest.
However, if LC_NUMERIC is changed, as.character () uses the decimal
separator that belongs to LC_NUMERIC (and not options

Sweave and backslashes
Hello Everyone,
I am an avid Sweave user and I am trying to pretty print floating point
numbers for latex output. For example in my document, I would like:
4.2\cdot 10^-{8}
Instead of:
4.2e-08
The Hmisc package has a nice function for doing this- but Hmisc has a ton of
dependencies and has proved very unportable to the various machines I work
on. So, I set out to write my own function that

numerics from a factor

A year or two ago some test cases that broke survfit were presented to me. The heart of
the problem was numbers that were almost identical, where table(x) and unique(x) gave

'make rpm' problem

I just tried running a 'make rpm' on a fresh install of Fedora Core 4

comma as decimal separator in xtable
Hello,
How can I make xtable print a comma as decimal separator? Setting
the option OutDec isn't enough for xtable:
library(xtable)
options(OutDec = ",")
x <- c(1.1, 1.2, 1.3)
y <- c(2.3, 2.2, 2.1)
d <- data.frame(x, y)
d
print(xtable(d))
Thanks!

Trouble with gridBase and inset plots
Dear All,
I ma having a trouble in generating a figure containing 3 insets with
the gridBase package.
I always get an error message of the kind:
Error in gridPLT() : Figure region too small and/or viewport too large
No matter which parameters I choose. The plots works nicely with two
insets only, but when I try adding the third one, my troubles begin.
I am probably doing something wrong in the

Add interpunct (dot) symbol to axis label?
I'm having problems creating an axis label for a plot.
y_label = expression(paste(plain('CPUE
'),plain('(fish'),plain('x'),plain('h'^{-1}),plain(')')))
I'd like to replace the "x" with an interpunct symbol (dot). Any
suggestions how to do this?
Thanks in advance.

as.numeric(levels(factor(x))) may be a decreasing sequence
Function factor() in the current development version (2009-05-22)
guarantees that levels are different character strings. However, they
may represent the same decimal number. The following example is derived
from a posting by Stavros Macrakis in thread "Match .3 in a sequence"
in March
nums <- 0.3 + 2e-16 * c(-2,-1,1,2)
f <- factor(nums)
levels(f)

multiple plots problem
hello,
i try to plot 3 graphs which have the same x.axis underneath each other. i'd
like the plots to be aligned without margings between the boxes and draw a
single x axis beneath the lowest plot.
i managed to get the alignment by setting par(mar), but the middle box is
stretched
and i cant't figure out how to get around this. par(pin) was my guess, but
this doesn't do the job

aligning axis labels in a colorkey from levelplot
R does a great job with the fine details regarding plots. e.g in the
following:
library(lattice)
y <- -4:4/10
xyplot(y~1, las=1)
the y axis is labelled with numbers -0.4, -0.2, 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 with the
numbers aligned on the decimal point.
How do I get the same behaviour in the colorkey of a levelplot? e.g.
levelplot(matrix(y,3,3))
the numbers in the colorkey seem left-aligned, and
