return first index for each unique value in a vector
I would like to efficiently find the first index of each unique value in a
very large vector.
For example, if I have a vector
A<-c(9,2,9,5)
I would like to return not only the unique values (2,5,9) but also their
first indices (2,4,1).
I tried using a for loop with which(A==unique(A)[i])[1] to find the first
index of each unique value but it is very slow.
What I am trying to do is easily

Dear R users
I?m aware that the package ?modest? is useful to find the mode in an array.
However, I?d like to know if someone has translated the ?mode? function built-in
in MATLAB into R language. This function finds the most frequent value in an
array (http://www.mathworks.com/help/techdoc/ref/mode.html).

adding 3D arrows to 3D plots
Greetings,
I would like to add 3D arrows (i.e. arrow-headed vectors linking X1Y1Z1 to X2,Y2,Z2) to a 3D plot; ideally the sort of plot that can be rotated interactively. Is this possible using plot3d, or another 3d plotter in R?
While it is easy to draw segments in plot3d (e.g. below), I haven't figured out how to add arrow heads, or to create 3d arrows from scratch.

export/import matrix
Hello
I have a problem on keeping the format when I export a matrix file with the write.table() function.
When I import the data volcano from rgl package it looks like this in R:

rgl.Sweave not producing transparency in pdf plots with alpha
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get rgl.Sweave to produce plots with transparency.
However, it just seems to produce opaque plots when pdf is the output
type. Perhaps this is a known issue? I'll just use .png in the
meantime, but wanted to see about this, as I didn't see it in the
documentation (though it's possible I missed it).

I have a 2D matrix, which has 100 rows, and 100 columns,
I have a 2D matrix, with 100 rows and 100 columns,
I want to display it using 3D plot, much like plot3d and mesh/surf functions
in matlab.

R - Compiling and calling Fortran code that uses IMSL libraries - Help!

On of my users is seriously thinking about moving to R from Splus. In his
testing, he has already found some benefits to it. He has, however run
into one issue, calling his Fortran functions in R. Previously, in Splus,

rgl package don't draw points with a color over points with another color
I want to plot points with different colors to show different
selections of points in a 3d plot.
My problem is that if I plot a red point at a location where already a
blue point was plotted, than the point is still blue.
Is there a parameter or so which can be used to draw over a existing point?
Example:

> open3d()
> plot3d(a<-c(1,2,3,4,5),a,a,type="l",
